Then seeing a modern $20 and seeing how thin it is, but all the same components in SMD format, and a frew SoCs to simplify it even further.
You don't need to remove the antenna connector nut on this radio to disassemble it. For any radio device that has an FCC ID, the last digits are the model number of the board that was sent in for evaluation. Any major design change requires a new verification. Although this is sold as a uv5r, you'll notice that the last digits of the FCC ID are still uv-k5. This is true for the uv-k5, k5(8), k5(99) and the uv-k6. Although it has a different FCC ID, the retevis ra-79 is also the same chassis. I Hope this is useful to some of you, if not I'm sure you'll let me know.
@HamRadioDX i always wanted to make a sleek pocket radio with a UV-K5, 1. shave the thumb guard around the VOL knob. it just extra plastic, 2. find a smaller VOL knob. 3. use the "bullet" antenna from Diamond Antenna called the RH3, or alternatively the SRH -805S . both are nearly 1" long. That's it. Now you have a radio that fits *entirely* in a shirt pocket. Or into your pants pocket.
