My favorite lines in this song: "The ghetto is a physical manifestation Of hate in a place where ethnicity determines your placement A place that defines your station Remind you niggas your place is the basement" Real talk, Lupe. Real talk.
I did find it a little funny you got the physical manifestation scheme but not the 3rd verse up until the DEEP DISH bar lol Lupe uses the pizza, the 🍕, as a metaphor as well as the salad You would normally assume Lupe being who he is, to big up the salad, not the pizza. As its healthier However he bigs up the pizza. So you understand there’s no better or worse between the two. It’s simply preference Since nowadays most of the veggies fruits and even meats sold are GMO Also plays on HELLthy and unHELLthy And on top of all that, Pizza is to also refer to the Program, Gov, etc But in the case of GMO goods, the salad refers to the program too So it’s like damned if you do, damned if you don’t Hence, it’s a DEEP DISH to get into haha
I dont always think of rap as "music", like having a melody...a lot of the time they're not really "singing".... it really is more like poetry with instrumental accompaniment and a good beat. So the lyrics are the total heart of it, to me, what is getting said and how it's being said. I thought this was brilliant, it was a well known issue, but looked at from a different angle, one that's familiar to people who've lived in dangerous neighborhoods, but might not occur to people who haven't. Just having to come up with ways to deal with the inconvenience of people being unwilling to deliver things to you because they're afraid. Nobody should, but especially a child shouldn't have to grow up somewhere that it's too dangerous to drop off a pizza. Trying to imagine what it would be like to be in the center of that every day. I drive for Uber, and I will accept all trips, no matter where they are. People need rides, they have to get to work, they need somebody to come get them, that's the service I'm providing, so I do it. Some drivers wont. I often drive into Hartford, CT into some pretty rough neighborhoods. I was witing for a passenger once and a couple hundred feet away there was a drive-by shooting. A bunch of pops, and a woman running out into the street screaming for help. Had never been close to something like that and it definitely got my adrenaline going. I picked up a few rides in that neighborhood right afterwards, I was a little jittery and mentioned that there had just been a drive by. It was actually really sad that the passengers said "yeah" and shrugged a little, like they were totally used to it and it wasnt a big deal at all, and there I was, shaken and wide-eyed. I wish rappers didnt have to write about this stuff, didn't have to live in the middle of it🙁
@Theme Fresh Not sure what I can do about it. Just barely making it myself, single mom with autistic son, who's 13 and the size of an adult, but has the mischief-level of a toddler and has to be constantly supervised. When I'm not driving for Uber I'm taking care of him. The one thing I can do is to never turn down a trip. Some drivers will accept a trip, see the address and cancel if it's in a rough area. Same places that people dont want to deliver food to also have trouble getting Ubers to come pick them up. Uber is providing a service and I decided I'm not going to deny anyone that service because of their address, neighborhood, etc. Especially late at night. I drive overnight on weekends when my sis can sleep at my place while my son is asleep. I dont think of what I do as just a way to make money. I want to help people who need to get to their third shift job and have drivers keep cancelling on them because of their neighborhood. People who need to go a few blocks to get home but it's too dangerous to walk. Ive picked up a few women who were fleeing domestic violence situations in the middle of the night, with their kids in tow. Right now I feel like that's all I can really do to make any kind of difference. I cant make cities be any safer, but I can try to help individuals travel safely in areas where it's too dangerous to walk or bike at night. I hope someday I'll be in a position to do more.
My reaction. I Love the song. I knew from the news that pizza companies won't deliver to the worst parts of St. Louis. At the time, I simply understood why and let it go. But this song gave me a small feeling of what that means to the people living there. Thank you for the lesson.
I always said I didn't listen to rap because I couldn't understand the words. The more songs I hear on your channel the easier it is to grasp the lyrics.
Wow, I'm Lilly white, this is not something I would listen to normally, but I'm glad I got to hear it. I never knew that this happened. Wow. That really makes me think and as much as I hate to say this, it makes me realize white privilege.
I listen to rap occasionally, but sometimes I have trouble understanding what they are saying. This one was interesting. Can you please check out the Rightous Brothers "Ebb Tide" from 1965. That one always gives me goosebumps.
Its a sad state of affairs. I can't quite make out what they were saying but I got the gist from the video. Songs like this make me sad and I feel sad such a lot of the time anyway sorry
Not just the pizza man, look how many ''mainstream'' business have pulled out on the black community. what a shame, There is a decline in entrepreneurship and business ownership among black Americans, because some of these ''mainstream'' retailers and financial institutions feel (due to stereotyping) that the possibility of starting and maintaining an independent business in black communities are too much of a risk..sorry..i will get off my soapbox..excuse sometimes I just blurt before I think when i get a little irate...lol
