To me, this is the only version of this song. I love everything about it. The dynamics, the restraint, the emotion, the musicianship. I listen to the studio version after this, and it is not even the same song.
Search for Clapton Orchestra Night 10 February 1990. Then half way through concert is wonderful tonight and even better version. No video sadly, just audio but it’s about the music anyway.
This version from 24 Nights is thee best version ever. It brings back so many memories slow dancing with a woman who I thought the world of. To this very day I'm dancing with her once again when I hear this song. To long lost loves.
I heard Eric in an Interview say that after his son Conor had passed and Eric of course was drowning in grief (I have been there),,,,that he had overwhelming anxiety ,,of course and couldnt seep but one day at a freinds house ,,,they wanted to play (what would become an album to him ) cause he hadnt heard it before ......When this version of "Wonderful tonight" came on ..He said for the first time he felt peace thinking of a simpler time in his life when he wrote this..It made him finally slip into a peaceful sleep since Conors tragic passing ....and so he decided to work on these songs ,,,that is why This version has become my absolute favorite! Wishing Eric and Conor Peace and may they meet again in the Great Eternal Afterlife ....which is only how I see dying ..but Im sure they will meet again....Peace to all
What a truly lovely comment to make. I think of my late wife when I hear this. I always visualise her putting on her earrings and checking to see how she looks before going out for the evening. Incidentally,we were at the Royal Albert Hall when this was recorded.
I didnt lose a child..Thank God! I lost my husband at a young age ...and I am in no way comparing this with the grief of losing a child! I cant even imagine that pain and I feel if I lost a child It would kill me! But Eric did lose a child ,..and as a former alcoholic ....or an alcoholic who has been clean 7 years at the time my husband passed ,,,I founf solace and inspiration from Eric Clapton when he said .." If ever there was a reason to go back to drinking this would be it and no one would have blamed me"...I thought of that a million times while grieving on my couch watching the minutes go by and feeling accomplished if I made it through 5 minutes! Reading Eric's book helped me so much ,,because he said " he wasnt going to tarnish his sons memory by just drinking it away!! and again ,,Losing a child has got to be the WORST thing to ever happen to a human being and I thought about what he said and never took a drink and carriedon,,Thankyou Mr. Clapton! I can't Thank you enough!!
кристофер аллен Pleaseread my above comment ..Im sorry I should have directed my comment at you ,,but didnt figure that out until after I wrote it.....Thankyou for commenting....
roconnor01 That is a beautiful memory of your wife ..and to be at this very concert must be so special to you ...wrap yourself in the comfort of those wonderful memories you have about your wife..and please accept my heartfelt sympathy,,Wishing you Peace my friend....
I am thinking around this time, Butch Baker, a country music artist, came out with his version of the song. Then, in 1998, David Kersh came out with his version.
I have met the love of my life and just bought wonderful again l long to slow dance with her in front of the fireplace in a candle lit room what a wonderful surprise it will be for her , , , and me !
Best version EVER.

that one lady yelling "eric" is ingrained for all eternity
This is an amazing version of the song and the lady's yelling of his name just makes it that much more special
