- In the 1950s and '60s, young Ruben Santiago Jr. (Marcus Franklin) lives in a lively boardinghouse in the blue-collar town of Lackawanna, New York, with his father (Jimmy Smits) after his parents separate. Run by the motherly Nanny Crosby (S. Epatha Merkerson) and her taciturn husband (Terrance Dashon Howard), the boardinghouse residents, including The Bandleader (Mos Def), singer Pauline (Macy Gray) and cabaret owner Dick Barrymore (Ernie Hudson), teach the young boy about life and art.
I cried thru out the whole movie. S. Epatha Merkerson put her foot in that role. Googled it and Found out she did receive her flowers for it. She won a golden globe as well as an Emmy.
Thanks for sharing. Culturally black communities need some one to respect. And aspire to.
Epatha sure did had me in to it
I truly enjoyed this movie I watch it everyday reminds me of how strong this beautiful black woman was and the luv she had for people now let's not get it twisted she didn't play yeah GREAT MOVIE AND GREAT ACTORS💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
isnt it just the damn best so many people arent even aware of this movie
She deserves it.
My mother used to watch this over and over when it aired on HBO. I just watched it for the first time in almost 15 years by myself…she passed in 2020. I needed this ❤
I watched this with my father & I always remember how he said Nanny resembled/reminded him of his mother , who was dead some thirty years or so. Now everything I see this film I think of my papa who’s gone too. 😢
🙏❤️
@@WarriorX-pm3uh thank you ❤️
❤ I watches it over n over too baby. God bless you and continues to Bless your mom.
🙏🏾Sorry for your loss
Epatha deserved a Oscar for this role. She absolutely embodied this role and killed every part.
Exactly, I have always thought that too
Because it was made for TV she got an Emmy instead.
THIS MOVIE IS A CLASSIC.
Indeed she did.
@@akaziaj I saw this and I thought it was Oscar Material as well
"He went all the way to 6th grade" wow, how mighty far we've come! I value my education so much because of the sacrifices that were made
Yes, also Richard Wright who wrote Black Boy (1908-1960) wanted so much to go to College. He graduated from Junior High in 1925 at 17 with a 9th Grade Education. He was three years behind his peers because he moved around alot as a little boy.
This is when our people truly stuck together black& brown . We need this back
I'm not so sure about Hispanics but yea
Let get the black folk together first
There is NO black and brown coalition!!! Never was wake up
I agree
So proud to be black.. this film is phenomenal
I am Canadian (5th Generation), I am a descendant of The Underground Railroad. So many wonderful pictures in the Opening Sequence and as Rod Stewart once sang "Every Picture Tells A Story". What wonderful stories would there be to tell.
if anyone wants to know a fun fact about this movie, in the beginning of the movie, I was the baby being born in the movie. Its cool to see 18 years later that I was in a movie as a baby!
Oh wow, that’s so cool!
You stole my comment 😅
❤
Wow how amazing is that! I absolutely love this movie!❤🥰
You were gorgeous...
I've been searching for this movie for 3 years!
HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH!!!!!@!!
lol me too
Walmart gotthe dvd for 7.99 i bought 1 for me and 1 for my daughter
Same
I have recorded on dvd as backup.😁. Couldn't have it any other way!!!!!
When you have that one movie that has your heart, soul, spirit and your all and haven't seen it so long.... When you finally do get to see you just smile from ear to ear.
This and Crooklyn do that to me!
Jeffrey Wright is so underated. Amazing actor
Yes you have to see him in Syriani with George Clooney and Matt Damon and of course the Manchuria candidate
@@nanettematthews2264 😲 wow thanks @Nanette! I will!
It’s sad what happened to him 😞
@@nelixsulu6201 what happened to him
You are sooo right! When you say his name, people don't know who you're talking about. I have to say, " the bad guy in the Shaft movie with Samuel Jackson." He is truly talented.
#"Babbbbbbby We Gonna Dance" 💃 She Meant That & It Was Felt...#Still Watchin In 2021💖💞
From her soul
2022#myfavorite
But for a yt girl she didn't do it for her own so I feel conflicted about that part
The last 15 mins. Just take me out. Too many emotions to count. Lord this movie is HEAVY.
I cry every time it pulls at your heart strings
I do a ugly cry in the last 15mins.
I find myself watching this movie yearly it's one of a kind I've never forgotten. The iconic list of actors and actresses make this a spell bounding must see.
YES ME TOO, IT'S A MUST
This one and Something the Lord made are my two favorites
Same ❤
This movie is a favorite for me. It is based on a true story about Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Ruben is also the actor who played Halle Berry's husband in "Their Eyes Were Watching God". He also played in "American Gangster" as Denzel Washington's bodyguard while they sat in the coffee shop.
And he was in Shaft
Halle produced this Movie!!! Pay attention to who’s singing the opening song track.. sounds like a female but it’s a man!! Who the Late great Nancy Wilson idolized!!
“ Little Willie Scott” that voice is mesmerizing! You can hear where Ms. Nancy Wilson vocals style originated.
@@MsCulinaryPro Wow. 😯I had no idea. Will look up this singer.
Rip 🤍🕊🙏🏾Michael k Williams ( Jimmy Lee 😢) ! Such a brilliant actor and Beautiful Spirit 🙏🏾!
Yes he was very nice
Nannie reminds me of my grandmother. Complicated life with multiple layers but she embodies pure love.
Jeffrey Wright is brilliant in his role, as well as producer Ruben Santiago!!
Yes! This was based on Rubens life love this movie the story everything
They ain't taking,"MY BEST BUDDY OUTTA HERE!"..VERY POWERFUL SCENE!!
I love how Bill kind of didn't care much about Rachel (Nanny) through out the beginning of the movie but the second that Lannie (Key Dude) tried to attack her he went full protection mode because that is still the women he loves. it was so sweet!! ❤❤
Terrence Howard is dangerous when he gets emotional in a movie... That's when he starts to steal the scene. In most movies and TV shows he's coasting like in Empire and The Player's Club. But give him a little room and a quiet moment like in Mr Holland's Opus opposite Richard Dreyfuss and he makes the other actors disappear.
He’s a great actor.
Yes!!
I don't think I ever heard of a more beautiful way to describe death: When this body is too tired to go on, death will say "I understand."
An absolutely superior movie. I’ve watched it at least 10 times. This movie deserved every award available.
40 to 50 times
I hope Macy Gray got her dues for this! She was great!!! I keep coming back to this movie 🤣🤣 I love it!!
The cast of this movie was phenomenal! One of my favorite movies of all time!❤️🥰
This movie had the best Black actors that brought the spirits of foundational Black Americans to the screen.Black people back in those days stuck together.
The scene where he looked in nanny’s eyes and she touched his face with her hand and no words were spoken the love was understood brought tears to my eyes I have the only pic of my grandma with her hand on my sons face and the other hand on his shoulder is so special to me because u can see her love for him the same way it brought tears to my eyes what a great movie and great actors that brought the movie to life wonderful to see
I love this movie, this is when black folks loved one another and took care of each other.
Love love love this movie....reminds me of my gma
Reminds me of my Grandma and Moms ways during that time period. I can actually see the lessons and comiradaire of people and community soul food, ceremony, caring, love, friendship, black womanhood and most all commitment to one's calling.🤗😁.

Forgot how good this movie was. Used to watch it all the time as a kid. So many messages I missed too. That lil Ruben was a lovely beautiful boy and Nanny was the most savage, humble fun woman! Wish I stayed at her place in real life. Especially for Friday night fish fry. 🥰🥰🤣🤣 So much love and true meaning. Everyone having fun and living. 🥰🥰🥰
Excellent movie!!! Best I've seen in a long time on this level. This movie is truly something special. A beautiful gift . Music, song and cast EXTRAORDINARY !!!❤❤❤❤
This movie is so inspirational. True African American experience. When we relied on each other and took care of each other. We need to get back to this DESPERATELY!
The part of integration that went wrong.. we sat at their table and then they poisoned us.

I had an aunt like this loved me into being.
Everybody in town know pauline ain't stable and who she love. That man couldn't look at me
If only we could. We're too busy stabbing each other in the back, talking about each other and killing each other for us to lean on one another. I desperately want moments like this too where we can live, love and help one another. But there is hope.
I love this movie so very much! All the beautiful black and brown actors in this film have touched my heart. ❤️❤️
This is my absolute favorite movie in the entire world!! I cry every time I watch this movie! 😢 Reminds me of my granny 🕊 🪦 🙏🏾🧿

Still up today this is my favorite movie. I get so emotional at the same parts. Thank you Mr Ruben Hudson San Santiago ❤❤❤❤❤
I only can say where is the love for one another. Today!!! It like our people are afraid to care. Truly, breaks my heart to see how far apart we really are. Excellent movie, that makes me remember my youthful year.
WHO IS WATCHING IN 2024... OLDER MOVIES are awesome when you watch them after many years it is like you are watching a new movie!!! THIS MOVIE SHOWED THE SPIRIT OF how Foundational Black Americans ability to survive.
Isaiah 41:10
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
This Movie will ALWAYS be a Gem 💎💪🏾💫! Rip Lou Myers 🙏🏾!
I love this movie, I've seen it several times and will see it again! I laugh, I cry, so many emotions. Reminds me of my surroundings when I was a young girl 👍
Community Motherhood is worth the LOVE.
The best movie ever! This movie reminds me of my beautiful late grandma, she took people in that was down on there luck all the time, I guess that's where I get it from, loving and helping people in need, she taught me a lot of beautiful things.
This Is My Movie I Just Love This Movies Very Good Movie ❤😂😮😅😢😊❤ I Use To Watch This Movie Over And Over Again Now I'm Going To Do It Again Thanks For The Movie!! 😊
I love this movie!!!! Macy Gray should've been a actress!!
I mean.... wasn't she ? The whole movie .
She's a great singer and actress. This is only the second movie i saw her in, but there might be more. I love her music because she has her own unique style.
@@talenalewis1823 Yessssss I've always loved her unique style and sound, I wish we could get more of her!
OMG! I luv this movie so much!!! I would always looks for it on Netflix, Prime, Vudu etc. An although I didn’t grow up in the North to experience this beautiful community we had the same down South! The juke joints, the Big Mamas, the music to reflect the times, the fish frys where anyone was welcome! No one went hungry or homeless. Everyone’s children were raised and/or chastised by the community. We loved our community, culture, and each other. We took the good w/ the bad. This movie brings back such good memories. Now if I can get Crooklyn that will complete my list! Thank you for uploading this!!!
Exactly!!
My words exactly!!
When would you say the era for this sort of ended if you know what I mean ... would you say by the mid or late 1960s .?
They should play this on Tubi
I truly adore this movie. I think of "Nanny" to this day when I pride myself on being a black woman and how we I should be.
I’ve always loved this movie 🥰 a tearjerker for sure. I love the actor that plays Nanny and this is the first role I’ve ever seen her in

My uncle Ralph Richardson, and his entire law firm enjoyed this beautiful movie 🍿 We talked about the day it aired on HBO and just watching it again 8/3/24, reminded my of all the wonderful things he did for people he met. Love you always uncle Ralph your nephew Will Smith. RIP❤

Anderson Cooper's Grandfather Reggie Vanderbilt started drinking at 18 and by the time he was 43 he was a full fledged alcoholic, he told his 18 Year Old Fiancee Gloria Mercedes Morgan he had Cirossis of the liver but chances are she misunderstood and thought he said sclerosis the back issue. The man died without a penny to his name.
