Nando, I really appreciate that you keep talking about how gambling can be awful and destructive in videos. It’s a good thing to keep reminding ourselves that these things being SHOVED down our throats - like prediction markets, AI, surveillance - are actually horrible and shouldn’t be normalized the way they are
Agreed
Spot on
Holy hell the prediction market gambling ads being undisclosed is so insane to me
Kid Rock 55
I agree about the trailers, almost across the board. I am however VERY sad you can’t appreciate that dominate, high-level Seahawks defense!
Captain Midnight! I love your content! Big Fan 🔥🔥🔥
You probably wouldn't even like most of the movies 🙄.
yo i just watched something recently that had the captain midnight lunchbox in it and dang i cant remeber
THANK YOU
Aren’t you a Chiefs fan?
If an ad cost 10 million dollars then no wonder marvel didn't pay for one, there paying every actor every for doomsday
Just so many grammatical errors here
@cOwala96 there paying every actor every for doomsday
@bryce6979 is that supposed to be helpful?
@cOwala96 Yeah I don't mind a few mistakes here and there but sometimes there's that comment reminding us why these rules exist.
@Ezullof there paying every actor every for doomsday
_"Hey we'll find your dog"_
But when your mom's kidnapped from her home theres nothing we can do until it's far too late
The ads could be summed up as 50% nostalgia bait, 50% AI clanker shit. Now, I may not be a sports guy, but as a New Englander, Sunday night was...quite the rough experience 😂
Call gambling gambling, don't let them weasel out of it, don't participate in their doublespeak.
Sometimes I forget America is newer to the gambling is everywhere thing, as an Australian it’s been so deeply ingrained in my life and the lives of most people I know, we have such bad gambling addictions and it’s one of the leading causes of debt, unhousing and suicide.
But also we have lots of young Australians who have the mindset of you, that gambling is bad and has destroyed so many people’s lives, especially ones we love, so it’s also weird seeing people think it’s controversial to say gambling is unhealthy
It's because until 2018 the US had restricted interstate and online gambling. It's so frustrating that we allow it so easily. At least with in person casinos they would generally ban you if they thought you had a problem. No casino wants to be labelled the addiction casino that causes suicide.
Curious about where you get the idea gambling is everywhere in Aus. As an Australian myself gambling has been a non presence for my life and everyone around me until I started working at a bingo place, but even those gamblers are a very specific demographic.
Are you just talking about the sports betting stuff, because pretty sure America has that just as bad??
Not going to remove my comment, but damn it would appear I've been lucky to be in a bubble outside of the gambling addiction. Looks like we are close to if not the biggest gamblers, and on rethought I guess the lotto and stuff is constantly pushed by media. Pretty despicable.
@ColgateMannI mean everything. Pokies at every pub, sports betting advertisements on every station, advertising to children, keno, horse betting.
Honestly, I'm just kind of jazzed that there was a Pokemon commercial that actually featured Luxray.
While I love mons like Arcanine, I yearn for representation that goes beyond Gen 1, so I’m glad to see Luxray too.
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan coming in clutch
25:41 Tarantino is sticking to the weird arbitrary rule he invented that he can only make ten films. Giving the script to Fincher (and allegedly spending every day on set) allows him to sidestep his stupid rule.
As an addict, I very much appreciate your anti-gambling message, bro.
It’s really hard to live with a gambling addiction. Best of luck to you.
@BernardOLearyieI’m not a gambling addict per se, but, addiction is addiction.
I’m 10 years clean of all street drugs * and * more importantly, alcohol, but, I did use damn near everything - I’ve literally died and been brought back to life by EMTs after I OD’d on heroin (and * lots * of alcohol beforehand) - for damn near half my life.
Note: I had to be specific when saying “street drugs”, because I am (completely legally) Rx’d meds - including Suboxone, which blocks the brain’s opioid receptors, literally preventing me from getting high off them if I were to use again - that AA and NA wouldn’t allow me to say I’m “clean” while taking - legally Rx’d or not.
Everybody has their own path.
AA and NA are far from the only answers.
(I’ve been to thousands of meetings and have massive respect for most of those people; it’s just not for me.)
I appreciate the support, regardless, though.
👊🏻
People starving on the street but someone has 10 million to spend on a commercial for CLIFF BOOTH 😭
I literally had no idea what that ad was even an ad for. I absolutely did not understand that it was a trailer for a movie about Cliff Booth.
Yea
I was so sure that there would be a real Mando trailer that I coped and said “oh that’s fun, they’re doing a parody ad and THEN the real trailer will come later in the Super Bowl”
same
Being English I had no idea it was even a parody since I'm not familiar at all with Budweiser commercials. I thought it was a Christmas thing like Santas sleigh and thought it was super weird timing.
I was looking around at the Super Bowl party wondering if I was in some sort of fugue state
Absolutely insane when the ring commercial came on like build-a-surveillance state at home isn’t framed as a nightmare
A bunch of us after the Amazon ad: did AI write that to scare us into NOT using it?
It was scary enough being fairly certain these corps are spying on us but to have it rubbed in my face gleefully was another level of dystopia
At least we learned Nest will soon be mass surveilling our neighborhoods...
I read a month ago that ICE had been using Ring footage to look for people. It was the only natural progression. Those things vs have always been creepy. A good way to spy on your neighbors.
you mean Ring?
Could be worse, Alexa+ wants to kill Thor!
Nest? It's Ring. Amazon. Google is already doing mass surveillance
Benny Safdie Bowser Jr. is still just as, if not more funny to me than Chris Pratt Mario, because it's just completely bizarre from a marketing perspective. Like what do you mean the co-director of Uncut Gems is in the new Mario movie???
He’s got a whole acting career going on at this point! He’s in Chris Nolan’s Odyssey, too!
@IAteFire He was good in Oppenheimer, though it was a pretty minor role. I also liked him in Good Time even if his role in that movie is probably offensive lol
But yeah I don't think it's a bad casting choice at all, he sounds good, it's just weird, like they're really fishing for the Letterboxd crowd to check this one out I guess.
I really hope Project Hail Mary is as good as the book. All the material so far has looked excellent.
I finally caved and requested the book for Christmas after it being recommended so many times. So good. Looking forward to it.
The book is one of my absolute favorites!! Really hoping they do justice to it 🤞🏻
I've been telling everyone I can to NOT WATCH THE TRAILERS until you read the book, but it's gonna be fun regardless. The book is great and I'm sure the movie will be a good time.
The Toy Story thing with Woody was a 4 second snippet from a Levi’s ad called “Backstory”, there was no Toy Story 5 ad for the Super Bowl, most likely so Pixar can continue to hype up Hoppers which is going to release next month.
It's as if every movie studio was playing a game of chicken like "I don't want to release anything good and something else takes over the conversation" and no one releases anything worth any conversation
The Deadmeat crew pointed out that that scene at the end of the Disclosure Day trailer, where the deer and animals walk up to the Christmas cabin, looks like an AI Coca-Cola commercial-can’t even see that.
Fun fact, he actually never was supposed to be called Kid Rock, it just caught on because of a widely distributed misprint T-shirt depicting him saying his famous line "KIDS ROCK" and it became so popular that he stuck with it
What was bros original stage name?
I knew the ads this year were disappointing when I woke up and realised there was ZERO buzz online about anything that had been revealed, first time that’s ever happened to me since I started paying attention to Super Bowl ads years ago
I wouldn’t say bad i would say atrociously awful
The coloring on the Disclosure Day trailer is again that super low contrast, desaturated, boring look. It’s so sad, because when you showed the screenshot from Jurassic Park, that film was so rich with color and contrast. Films don’t have to be slate gray with a teal tint. It also just makes everyone’s skin color look deceased.
The Ring camera ad seems like an anti-ad, who would buy a door camera that they now know can be used by other people to look in front of their house?
Facts 😂 same with the Chris hemsworth Alex ad
Whats the over under on Nando mentioning gambling in this video?
Am I only one who saw the film was called “Disclosure Day”, got that it was about aliens, and my brain instantly got railroaded into assuming this was an Independence Day sequel?
Not me, but I'm sure you weren't the only one. It's an easy conclusion to make.
9:16 thank you for verbalizing this point! man, why do my serotonin levels spike when Nando rails against the widening market of online gambling? i’m frankly disgusted by the increase of celebrity endorsements to a life-ruining addiction.
The OpenAI ad at the Superbowl used the song "Pals" from 28 Years Later.
Pals is the theme of the Jimmies, a group of manic, murderous lunatics, led by a Satanist, who all dress as one of the most evil people in modern British history. It almost feels like parody that the big tech company chose it.
24:48 it was a bit insane to not mention that this was a movie or what it was related to at all. I was the only person at my party who knew what it was, and I was even slightly unsure by the end of the commercial. Nuts to not include a title or anything besides a Netflix logo
18:11 ... Keep in mind this is the same director that gave us a movie called "Minority Report", which did not begin to give you an idea of what the movie was about. Also, there was already a movie in the 90s called DISCLOSURE with Demi Moore & Michael Douglas.
Yeah, came here to say this, I’m sure they definitely didn’t want this movie getting mixed up with the 90s one lol
I think my brain filled in the gaps of Disclosure Day because for some reason when you brought it up I had a fully fleshed out idea of what it was. Then I rewatched the trailer and saw I was wrong. But what I thought it was about was aliens finally disclosing to us that they’ve been here for a long time. The message wasn’t just for human, but for the sleeper cell alien agents that have been living among us for decades. Similar to The Arrival. No idea where I got all that from now that I rewatched that trailer.
If that's what the movie is about, I'm all in. But like Nando, I haven't seen anything for this to make me want to see it other than "From Director Steven Spielberg..."
Sports betting is toxic but at least I GET it. I do not understand betting on pre-written entertainment. Betting on who dies in an Avengers movie is wild because half the people working on the movie know the answer. What stops them from placing bets or telling a friend all the answers ahead of time?
Disclosure day seems like a prequel to "the host", written by Stephanie Meyers.
Genuinely feels like you've been spying on me rn because my new year's resolution was to read a comic every time I find myself doom scrolling and I've been reading through outback X-Men. You actually described my exact situation lol.
My take on Disclosure Day is that it’s a stealth sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which is playing into the weirdness of the marketing.
Gosling’s red NASA suit looks dope AF on it’s own.
Trailer reminded me of McConaughey and TARS - best robot ever - in ‘Interstellar’.
3:57 spoken like a true cat person 🐈
2:20 they were in the Pharrell Williams Lego movie
respectfully, watching the turning point usa halftime shot and saying they should do it every year IS NOT helping the problem
Something I find so dystopian is that people go out of their way to watch these *ADS* when we do so much to be free from them online, yet, at things like the superbowl and times square, they're suddenly ok. it's insane, I've been actively avoiding these superbowl ADS for some years now
I like the anti betting monologue in the middle 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 i stand with that.
Personally, a Steven Spielberg Alien movie is enough or a pitch for me to not mind the marketing being unclear. Didn’t really vibe with any of the criticism of it there.
A Spielberg sci Fi is going to be a B+ movie *at worst*. I have no doubts about it being good, just not sure if it will be a hit.
Acid Reflux Aliens are corny
Judging by the plot shown in the trailer, I could see them using the premise as allegory for a certain other event the government isn't transparent about
They were so odd this year. The biggest victim of the death of monoculture is definitely the super bowl, but arguably the ads took a harder hit tbh. The lack of any real big cinematic presence was definitely felt. They had the quantity, but the quality wasn’t there. (That good will dunkin’ ad in general was absolutely the worst ad for me, just a much of incompressible nonsense.)
Ayyy monoculture mentioned. Was legit just explaining that to a coworker cuz they had no idea what it was. They low key defended it a bit and I was so disappointed
Did you forget about a spoiler review for wonderman?
The Chris Hemsworth Alexa ad was quite something, who would want an Alexa after that?! 😂😂
I thought that commercial was wild! It was hilarious but also, they didn't prove that the Alexa COULDN'T do those things. They just laugh it off like "haha it won't kill you. It can but it won't dont worry"
Can't stop screeching about how kid Rock is not kid
Unironically vibing to a pdf called bad bunny
I watched Despicable Me 1 and 2 when they came out. Those first 2 movies were actually really fun especially for kids. But I haven't seen any of the newer minions movies. It feels a bit played out at this point.
No fr that herding cats commercial is STILL amazing
I didn't watch the latest Hail Mary trailer because I am also trying to avoid spoilers, but if it was the thing that was revealed in the first trailer, I've heard from book readers that that isn't really a spoiler and that so much more happens than you could expect. Very much looking forward to this movie!
Thankfully the Project Hail Mary trailers hasn't spoiled all of the surprises yet. They gave away the big surprise from the book, bit there are a few twists the trailers haven't fully given away. They show scenes, hints, but cut away right before a line reveals something important.
And the last scene in the book hasn't even been hinted at yet. I hope they keep it.
It's tricky, because that first thing is what most of the book is about, but if you came into _Project Hail Mary_ directly from _The Martian_ it is a huge shock. So it makes sense to reveal it in the trailers, but if you manage to go in blind you'll hopefully get to have that same moment book readers did.
What are the spoilers?
@muddasiccRead the book. 🙂 Or listen to it, then you can really hear Rocky's "voice."
@muddasicc The "Big" one is in the first trailer, and the others are just kinda... exactly what he's doing out there and why, which isn't so much a "spoiler" as just the narrative of the story and I'm not sure why people are treating it elsewise, tbh.
I feel like you could state the "Why" and it wouldn't impact One's opinion of the tale overmuch, but I still won't cuz... I dunno I'm cool like that, I guess. I suppose it would kind of make it sound like any number of other movies with a pretty similar setup, and it's really not that kind of flick.
8:00 Andy Weir came out and said some of the things that could be considered spoilers for PHM aren't because they're critical to the story. Having read the book a few times, I recommend reading the book before seeing the trailer just so you know what's about to happen going in.
Honestly having seen the trailer I don't really think there are many things that I'd consider a spoiler in the trailer. I suspect Nando is thinking that meeting Rocky is a spoiler but that's like...the end of act 1. There's only 2 things I'm surprised they showed and they're entirely out of context shots.
Rocky is the big twist in the book. It doesn't come across as a "first contact" story _at all_ until Rocky shows up. It is a huge surprise right then. But Wier has said he knew it was a first contact book from the beginning.
@davedujour1 That happens SO early in the book that I personally don't think it's even a spoiler. It's like the thing that starts the second act of the book. There are plenty of other big twists.
Dogs are good bois, Nando. 😅
Finding out Nando doesn't like dogs is the worst lore drop of the year
I used to like dogs more than cats and now I have the reverse opinion lol
as much as I adore cats (my own that I've had for the last 3.5 years actually just died less than a week ago and I'm still processing it's even real) I love dogs also and would have one if I could, I found this a bit surprising too
@kevinw712sorry about your cat 💔💔💔
Nando V dogs.
The Disclosure Day ads feel like they are only showing the first 45 minutes or so because there will be a huge twist.
It’s cute the DCU has made it a tradition to release Krypto-related teasers during the Puppy Bowl, but it's so weird that there were NO MCU TEASERS!!!! AT ALL!!!! They hadn't released anything during the Super Bowl which is the first time since 2009 when they were just getting started. No Doomsday teasers I get because they already put out 4 of them every week in December but no Spider-Man Brand New Day teasers!?!?! That movie comes out first, what the hell!?!?! Looking all over the internet, the franchise apparently hasn't had a Super Bowl teaser since The Amazing era.
Between all this, most of the commercials being for medicine starring celebrities and watching one team not score anything until the 4th quarter might just be the most surreal Super Bowl I've ever watched. LOVED the Emma Stone, Adrien Brody, Guy Fieri, Benson Boone/Ben Stiller and Chris Hemsworth ads and Bad Bunny's performance!
Sony always tends to sit out the super bowl so it wasn't a shock. As does WB, which is why the supergirl thing aired on the puppy bowl, and Netflix usually but they broke that tradition this year.
Also its Spider-Man. They could drop the movie with no promotion and it would still be huge
That's why I don't put any stake into what the majority of all these content creators and their "sources", who are practically never right about anything, say anymore
The no DOOMSDAY one I can sort of understand, because it essentially would've been the first true, proper trailer for the movie (these 'teasers' have just been so esoteric, and the Russos even stating they may not be in the movie), and Marvel has never had an Avengers Super Bowl ad where that was the first major exposure to the movie. Anytime they've had one in the past, it was just another part of a marketing campaign that was fully up and running with full trailers having already been out before (cause Feige typically wants a first full MCU trailer to be its own thing in the media and not share attention with anything else)
Watch Disclosure Day be a version of V or yet another Body Snatchers
People should be made to choose between wearing a permanently frozen young person mask and an acting career, the two aren't compatible.
1:26 for wasting money
I think you're thinking too much into the Mandalorian and Grogu. That TV spot was great. More need to be like it and just play into the super bowl commercial feel. I will say that this would have worked better if the movie came out like 10 months from now or if they had already released a full trailer outside of a con.
No Doomsday teaser is weird or clayface
Clayface got pushed to October. You only really see movie trailers during Super Bowl that are trying to to market summer movies which Doomsday and Clayface aren’t.
Kid Rock is neither a kid nor rock. Dicuss.
Probably named himself after things he likes
Rock and roll
And kids
@SlammieDee Nice. I mean, gross... but nice. Also, he was born rich, the whole "white trash/country" thing is an act.
Project Hail Mary is my most anticipated movie of the year!
Disclosure Day is giving me M. Night Shyamalan vibes, and not in a good way. Like the film plays itself so straight that it just ends up being unintentionally funny. I’m worried that both Spielberg and David Koepp are just completely out of touch.
15:21 pretty sure they're interdimensional beings actually
Lmao
As someone who has never placed a bet on anything in his life, I am so incensed by fucking betting advertising everywhere I look. It’s so deeply unethical. And so unapologetic about it! So in the UK, we have something called NOW TV. Which is essentially where you get all of your HBO shows. And with every single ad, it includes a sponsorship by a very well-known betting platform/organisation. It’s fucking insane.
That said, I completely agree with you also, that Marvel Unlimited and DC Ultra subscriptions is the best money I have ever spent. I am absolutely blown away by the sheer excitement of the cornucopia of the entire history of the Marvel and DC universe in comic book form right there in the palm of your hand. And if you have an iPad 13 inch or the like, it is just the most gorgeous experience.
What's even more maddening is the celebrities and professional athletes who do ads for the betting apps. What is wrong with those people that they would accept these deals?? You're telling me Lebron needed the money bad enough that he's accepting deals to tell people to drop their money on sports betting. Idk I'm with you, it feels insane and everyone is under reacting
If America actually cared about its people they wouldn't allow ads for medicines or gambling (or "predictive markets")
But we are in a greed is good era and morals/empathy are uncool (see those in power and tell me they aren't all high school bullies)
4:03 I watched the final trailer for Project Hail Mary and all I can think is that’s how the Supergirl movie should look
Gambling is a product of the devil; we can call it what it is. And if someone is trying to sneak it into your everyday life, they are demons.
The name Disclosure Day got me thinking it could be like a black mirror episode where once a year people had their memories exported to a public cloud and their secrets exposed
3:45 Superman also used The Puppy Bowl for advertising. I wouldn’t be too frustrated with them using Krypto a lot in this trailer, it’s way cheaper advertising than the Super Bowl and they’re targeting a really specific demographic (dog people)
Disney must be terrified of showing real footage from the Mandalorian movie if they were willing to waste over $10M on whatever the hell that was. We know more about the movie’s characters from the leaked LEGO sets than we do from the ads. There is no way this movie makes back its budget with a marketing plan like this.
I was expecting a teaser for Spider-Man Brand New Day, didn't get one.😞
No doomsday. Felt like a miss tbh
the toy story one was complete ass
I don't really know what Hollywood is doing with its marketing lately... its all been a bit meh of late. I'm excited for these movies but not because of the marketing.
Love the takes, especially gambling and Brad Pitt! Appreciate the video! ❤❤❤
I only remember the Pokemon commercial....
Maybe because now most movie marketing campaings start like 2 months before the movie gets to theatres, but I remember in previous Superbowls they showed trailers of movies coming until mid to late on the year and not anymore, also most big movies today are still in production or just starting post production
One other good thing about the Super Bowl was the pizzas I made during the game.
Project Hail Mary had I would say three huge reveals in the book, and the trailers have revealed one of them. They've hinted at the others, but if you haven't read the book, I don't think you can piece it together. And for the record, the one they revealed, Rocky, happens on page 120, not even a third of the way into the book. Still lots to see with that one.
6:20 You should read the book, Nando! The reason why people are saying to avoid spoilers is because the conceit of the plot is that the protagonist knows nothing and keeps making discoveries as he goes through the story, and the plot is him figuring each next task step by step as he discovers them. And the thing that book readers don't want people to see in the trailers turns the entire story on its head when it's revealed!
The true role of minions is to be shorts that play before other animated movies, I was a child when despicable me came out and there was a bonus dvd of just 10 minute shorts of the minions getting into trouble and that is the best the minions have ever been, everything else would be better if it was max 15 minutes long
I used reading comics on my phone to cut down on Dooms rolling it can be really helpful
its cheaper to upload the trailer on youtube and it has more visibility worldwide
it's always shocking to hear Nando not like something
"speaking of kids movies, supergirl got a trailer" that's some crazy stuff to say... As if that source material was for kids in any way.
My fav commercial was the bud light with the eagle and horse. Not because I like bud light, (I don't), but because the Eagle is the Eagle's eagle named Lincoln and I am an Eagles fan
9:43 this is exactly what I did to stop doom scrolling
I'm looking forward to Disclosure Day only because it was filmed in my South Jersey backyard.
Yeah same this year Super Bowl was kinda mid for sure!!!
Regarding less ads and comic things and such, it's also worth recentering what social media you have, Cara and Perfectly Imperfect, for example, are both social media platforms that don't have ads at all and are much more focused on community stuff, it's much nicer vibes
This was my first year getting into comics and I loved I checked out a lot of DC stuff like static, Adam strange and the atom and I couldn't believe what I was missing
Imagine if 10mm on a supercell commercial was all spent on like...feeding people. 😮💨
9:02 I recall a host of the podcast Mostly Nitpicking also doesn't like when people say "bet".....
having read the book, i think your point about spoilers with PHM is right- the “spoiler” is really more of the introduction to the second act than a big climactic reveal
America has the second most Spanish speaking people of any country in the world. We have more Spanish speakers than _Spain_ . Spanish is an American language.
Ben stiller in the Instacart ad was great
Nando. It's always nice for me to hear your talk. Another great video family 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
superbowl more like slopper bowl
Gottem
Completely agree with everything you said. Also you were right not to watch the trailer for Project Hail Mary. It has spoilers that shouldn't really be shown (i read the book and was kind of annoyed they showed certain things). Either way I hope this movie is really good too
Get Corey Feldman for the halftime show🙏🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😭
