I like quality in a reel. No need for a train stopping drag below 7 wt and fishing for trout. Give me quality and good design. I love the fact they still produce these reels today. I also like that danielsson is producing these and not outsourcing to any other country and simply applying their name. With such a long production run they certainly nailed it the first time out!!!
Hi, I'm from Sweden, and I've been using these reels since the 80s, first in the Loop versions, a tip is to loosen the tension when you're not using the reel so that the rubber on the bearings doesn't form pressing spots, if you get gravel and debris between the spool and the bearings when you fish, just dip the reel in the water and it is fit for fight again.
When I bought my Danielsson Dryfly it was sold as a Loop in the U.S. This was more than 25 years ago. So my long time review is after about 25 years and I still love it, (and beat the crap out of it).
Uhg, yuk .. the sound of the metal scraping when you tilted it and put it back.. 😂 it drives me mad. Love the video my friend thank you for sharing your love and experience. Tight lines from the Salmon River, ny.
Thank you for you insights and knowledge in regards to this remarkable reel. I finally bought a Danielsson. Mine is a Loop Model 2 no. 4461. I bought it for a good used price. Like yourself, I always wanted one but at the time I couldn't afford it. As you said, it is vital not to expose the reel to silt/sand/mud. I learned this the hard way and partially bent my spool due to the roller bearings locking up onto it when trying to remove it. I hand straightened the spool out but it took some time and patience to fix it. Regardless, I'm happy to own one and plan to fish it hard.
Great review of this thanks very much. I’ve been swithering on getting one of these for my 10ft 3 weight Euro Nymph rod for use with a French leader setup and I think I will go for it 👍
I agree that a full drag isn't needed for most (if not all) UK trout fishing, although I still use a dragged reel for #5-#7 lines when fishing large stocked rainbows. For wild brownies and lighter river use I, like you, enjoy a simple dragless reel. My favourite over the last few years has been the Sage Click, which has a super-large arbour, is beautifully made, surprisingly robust, and weighs only 88g in its largest (#4-#6) size, an important consideration if I'm carrying into the hills for a few days wildcamping/fishing. That triple-roller arrangement on yours is fascinating!
Good video Paul. I was eyeing your reel up when we were fishing the other week and tbh I’m going to order the same one. Looked at the nymph but dry fly one looks more solid.
Thanks very much for watching. Yeah the reel has no drag to speak of so you would just put your line on the other way. When you add tension using the middle screw it tightens it when turning the handle both ways. Hope that makes sense. Tight lines Paul
Hi just found your review from a danielsson forum , I’m looking a new 4wt reel for March. My heads all over the place with brands like lamson liquid, redington zero, orvis battenkill and hardy marquis. I’m a dry fly angler and been reading abit about this reel. I’m based in Northern Ireland, looks to be pretty hard to find this reel online apart from there wedsite in Sweden. I think it’s coming in at over £200 now for delivery etc. how’s the reel faired up 3 years later? Are u still using it
Hi mate. Apologies for the late reply. I’ve just seen this. This reel was a great wee workhorse for me. I used it for a good 2 years. I’ve since moved it on and bought the Danielsson FW2-6. I just wanted something with a drag system. I keep meaning to post a review of that reel. They are only available direct from the factory in Sweden. Hope this helps and good luck with the search. Tight lines. Paul
@ hi no problem mate , just to let u know I got the dryfly reel, looks good, got it from Sweden for £136 postage and all, look forward to using it , thanks 👍
Nice reel but have I missed something, if it has no drag don't you get over runs? Me, I'll stick with my 30 quid Shakey Sigma Supra I just love to hear it sing when a good fish takes off. Tight lines
Hi Keith. No the reel it’s free spinning like a centrepin so it doesn’t over run. There are loads of click and pawl trout reels on the market with no drag. There is a school of thought with h says there really isn’t much need for a drag system for UK river trout fishing. I’m glad you like your reel and I hope you hear it sing plenty! Tight lines and thanks for watching. Paul
Took a chance with a 30 quid Shakey, surprisingly sturdy nice little line holder!I only fish the local reservoir these days and it's only recently that I get them "on the reel" and let the drag do it's job.

Sorry I just seen this mate. Aye it’s a great wee reel. Hope yours has arrived. 😎🎣
@@paulgarrigan2472 gave it a spin today bro but blanked, fished the dries for a laugh. Fair play to Neil, bringing fish up in that is near impossible
@@hungandhooked Aye that’s dedication 😆 Glad you got out for a bit.
Got the same reel straight from danielsson.best money can buy.could do with a spare spool if any going.last a lifetime
Yeah I’m delighted with mine. Should’ve bought one years ago. Thanks for watching.
how do you switch the reel from left or right hand retrieve or is it just done by winding it either way without making any adjustments?? Great video!
