      i substitute and watch friendly reminders by dude taking scenic routes. instead of changing things i really stuggle with, like getting back in psychotherapy. as if self-help ever worked for people who can't help themselves)
      if self diagnosis would be legit I'd say I'm AuDHD, but officially i have recurrent depression for now, so it's hard mode either way. writing this comment took me about an hour.

      My expirence has been knowing it's presence, and continuing to live in the same way expecting something different to happen. This was the case for quite some time, but in the last few months I've been attempting to understand it. With this I feel that I have learned a lot about myself, especially the nature of my insecurities; the root cause of it all. I have had to relinquish myself of coping habits, and many other things. The result is of this work has brought me to a good place, somewhere I didn't believe i'd find myself. My understanding of self has given me a lens in which to expand in a more positive way (in that of though and action). I feel it will be a life long journey, but I'm excited to see where it will take me

    A good response to a negative inner judgement might be "Yeah I hear you, but I think you're wrong"
    Accknowledging that it's there and disagreeing with it. Ascending it, in a way. Vulnerability and bravery are the two keys I've found most helpful with this. And patience. Sigh! Always patience.

    • @wilsonov87
      @wilsonov87 10 месяцев назад +4

      yes agreed, that was a really glossed-over point he missed. Resisting the negative thoughts will only make them more persistent. You need to just accept them arising and let them show up and then leave by themselves, which they will if you just are like 'meh, negative thoughts'. We can easily choose not to freak out about the presence of negative thoughts and rather just accept them as a normal part of life. Resisting them gives them power. Resisting anything gives it power, over you. So don't sit there like he is and say 'no, no go away' to the negative thoughts... just listen to whatever they have to teach you and let them go by themselves.

    Two things. Personally (and this has worked for me, but might not be for everyone) daily meditation has really helped me bat those self sabotaging negative thoughts into the weeds… they’re still there, but they’re a long way away. These things take time, but 10-15 mins a day has made a huge difference to my outlook.
    Secondly… this channel is truly a wonderful place to be. Thank you Justin for your time and honesty. It’s refreshing.

    As someone who has a phd in self sabotage, I really appreciate this message. What is so powerful about your video is not just the aesthetic, inspired creative, but the value and accessibility you create in very heavy topics. Thank you for this art. Truly. One thing I respectfully disagree with is the "fear of failure." I always thought for the longest is was that, but the more I've unpacked that notion, the more I've realized that it's really "fear of success" that is the scariest thing when in self-sabotage mode. Failing is a symptom of sabotage, but success is terrifying because we must face our saboteur, and step into our own light, feel that we deserve it, and that is the most terrifying thing of all. It's the quote by Marianne Williamson "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us." Thank you again for fighting your saboteur or any resistance to create something so beautiful, meaningful, and magical. 🪄

    Changing behavior requires a change in identity. People assume identity is formed by the behavior, but that’s assuming the past and future are the same. They aren’t. Change your identity, and your behavior will follow.
    Best practice I’ve found for changing behavior is writing down “I” statements. “I am not someone who drinks alcohol.” Or “I am someone who is capable of incremental positive growth.”
    Taking the negative self talk and turning into its antithesis also helps quell self sabotage. “I never get anything done on time.” Turns into, “I am someone who is capable of getting something done on time.”
    This works wonders for me. Instead of a passive, “Oh I should try to abstain from this negative behavior.” It becomes much easier to abstain when you decide that behavior is not a part of your identity any longer. People think to themselves, “Well I am technically someone who drinks alcohol because I have up until now.” But this only reinforces the identity as someone who does in fact drink alcohol. These antithetical statements should become your new mantra. Repeat them to your self several times a day.

    But I truly believe that alcohol helped me partly overcoming my insecurities since "it made them go away" and showed me what could be possible if I wasnt sabotaging myself and reflect on my inner mind. And that reflection helped me to make a change and get out of comfort zone on purpose.
    Of course that differs from person to person and alcohol is a dangerous drug that can easily ruin many thing about yourself and your life, but its just my thought, everybody's different.

    negative thoughts shouldn’t be something looked at as something that needs to be stopped. the problem isn’t the thoughts, it’s how we respond to and identify with them.

    Thank you! This is great… I will say… while it takes a lot of work… often it takes a whole lot of doing nothing… the allowing ourselves to be instead of the distracting. The distracting is part of dissociation related to the fear… I think…. I also think focusing on the awesomeness that is in store can work with that dopamine effect… maybe? Perhaps… I do also think that the term self sabotage is maybe a little problematic. For me, it sounds as if we are doing something to ourselves on purpose. When I believe it is more coming from a survival wiring of the brain that has gone awry… but maybe you are going to get into all this… I have yet to watch your other videos. Generally I think the English language can get limiting when it comes to all the nuances of our existence…. just a handful of thoughts… I will add that I am in my late mid life and am very thankful that younger people like yourself are taking these topics on. I hope that more young people see your channel and feel supported. 😊
