    I don't know if I ever told this story but I was on the Theodore Roosevelt from 86 to 90. I was an Aviation Ordnance Man working in the ships magazines. We were loading Harpoons from their storage crate onto the transporters and once they were on, we attached the fins and sent them up to the flight deck. As we were loading one, the guy turned too sharp and the seeker head was headed straight for the elevator door. I saw it and jammed my hand between the missile and the door frame to try and stop it. It didn't stop it. I broke 3 bones in my hand, but the missile seeker head was undamaged. So I am one of the very few hurt by a Harpoon not being an enemy being shot at. Every time I hear the word Harpoon I think back to that day in the middle of the Med. Stupid 18 year old kid trying to be a hero. I did get a letter of commendation for making the attempt though. I made E4 paygrade the next promotion board because of that incident, so in the end it worked out.

      doing a controlled detonation in Afghanistan to de-mil some corroded ammo (and a crate of bangalore torpedoes for the luls). Idiot kid sets a 10-minute time fuse without doing a test burn first, so there's no way to know what the duration is. Afghan civilians go walking near the peremeter, too close to the demo range. So naturally, I jump in the golf cart, zoom out there with no idea how long I got to do it in, and manage to cut the det cord on either side of the blasting cap and toss it away with less than a minute left.
      Kid got a royal ass-chewing about it and spent the rest of his deployment getting random burn-times yelled at him by me and he'd have to stop whatever he was doing and give me the exact length of det cord for a 5, 10, and 15 minute fuse.

They're are free, somewhat lower resolution (15m spatial) compared to what Google Maps is using but there are newer images available every 4-5 days on the same location. Landsat 8 images from USGS are also an option but those have even worse resolution (30m) compare to what ESA offers.

      Yep and they also can navigate around radar threats. They are able to coordinate a strike with one missile capable of acting as strike commander before it launches its attack. They cruise at about 3 - 6m above ambient sea level to avoid detection as well. Like the F-35 the LRASM and NSM are low observable systems, and are not 100% invisible to radar detection. Stealth means low observable, not completely invisible.

    It's fun to watch these wargame scenarios, keep them coming. I have serious doubts on the realism aspect though:
    1- RCS isn't so simple as just one number- in reality a craft will have different RCS at different aspects and especially emitter frequencies. For example frontal RCS is much smaller than side or top/bottom. Most modern radiation-absorbent materials (RAM) are optimized to absorb microwave frequencies since most fighter aircraft and ground FC/TR radars use this part of the RF spectrum for lock and missiles for terminal guidance. Modern "stealth-busting" search radars tend to operate in the VHF range.
    2-Modern USAF doctrine relies heavily on network-centric warfare. In this example one might expect heavy use of jamming/decoys and attacks from multiple directions to overwhelm the Russian integrated air defense system in Crimea.
    3-Experience and training is critical for efficient use of these high-tech weapons and defenses. Russian operators have very limited experience in defending against a massive network-centered attack such as this.
    See the S-400 video from HypOps' channel for an example of how much of a difference technological advantage makes on the battlefield.
    Also to keep in mind: successful Israeli attacks on Damascus (which has a russian-style IADS), Russian incapability to shoot down HIMARS rockets, or most recently Ukrainian USV's hunting Admiral Makarov.

    US policy on ground strikes with the number of air defenses pictured in this game, undoubtedly would be dealt with first via some form of long range cruise missile. The strike group most definitely would be supported by aircraft like the EA-18G Growler. Would be interesting to see a scenario with several B-2 bombers striking air defense targets before the strike aircraft go after the ships. It's even possible that the strike group would be supported by F-22 Raptors to engage hostile aircraft and protect the strike aircraft.

    • @Gabriel_McMillan
      @Gabriel_McMillan 2 года назад +5

      Perhaps, but in this case, the simulation is not realistic, because the air bases the F-35s took off from would take a tactical nuke as soon as the first missile was fired on a Russian warship.
      These games are fun and interesting and all, but the reality is, Ukraine needs to seek terms. It cannot win. Russia will nuke them if it even looks like Russia might lose the war by conventional means, and there is nothing we can do about it other than get ourselves nuked too, which would not help Ukraine either. I'm sorry, Ukraine, but, to the surprise of no serious military analysts, you cannot defeat Russia. You must accept the current battle lines, or else Lviv and Kiev will look a lot like Baghdad in 2004, by this time next month. • @danielcrotty8141
    @danielcrotty8141 2 года назад

    I know nothing about this, but have a question.
    Instead of attacking with the "best" missiles, can you instead fire decoys (or hellfires which cost much less). They don't even need to explode, fly low, go fast, be stealthy, or try to avoid. The idea is to fire them closer to home and return quickly. Their purpose is to make the enemy to detect and respond. In the meantime, our planes have returned, refueled, re-armed, and are off again.
    I doubt there is enough time for that, so possibly use lesser planes (fire them from Cessnas if it would work) on the first waves and have the real attack squads on the ready. You could also just land-based missile decoys.
    The real attack arrives after all the opposition weapons run out of fuel or are otherwise spent. You could even have 2+ waves of decoys. The more decoys they blow up, the more it costs the bad guys in both $$ and supply, and the less $$ spent buy us. Maybe they get smart and stop responding. That can be a good thing too.

    LRASM is based on the extended range AGM-158 which has a CLAIMEd range of 500 nm. Some say that the 158C may have shorter range because of the extra weight of the multi-mode seeker package, but folks still speculate that it has a range of at least 300nm. There has been some talk about reducing the warhead weight from 1000 lbs to like 650 lbs to get even more range. 650lbs i about the same weight as the warhead on a Spearfish heavy torpedo so you know it would be big enough for most ships.

    The USN has acquired the Kongsberg NSM (Naval Strike Missile) which is a 5th Gen missile like the LRASM. In fact it's been around a lot longer than the LRASM. It's also being modified as the JSM in order to fit into the weapons bay of the F-35. Both the NSM and the JSM have a smaller warhead than the LRASM. The LRASM is being integrated onto the P-8A Poseidon and I believe that the NSM is being integrated onto the P-8A as well. Since both Norway (Kongsberg is a sovereign Norwegian enity) and Australia are both funding the JSM integration on the F-35 and are now both P-8A users, they may push for the JSM integration onto the P-8A. Australia has the largest P-8A fleet outside of the USN.

      NSM is strictly surface and land launched at the moment, I doubt it will be integrated onto the P-8A, unless you meant in JSM form? What sets this missile apart from your average anti-ship missile, is they are built around the 'stealth' idea. Basically the shape of the missile, as well as its construction give the missile a very small radar cross section. What's more, these missiles are very 'smart'. In the lead into their attack, they use an internal long range system to scan the area in front of them, picking out the various signatures of enemy ships. This is saved in memory for the missile, and constantly updated (something like every second) as the missile nears the target. This way, if its guidance is scrambled, or the enemy deploys counter measures, the missile will simply 'remember' where everything was and home in on its target. Lastly, they are reportedly able to prioritize targets. If for example they are fired into a harbor, and detect a ship being hit and sunk, the missile is supposedly smart enough to change to a different target that isn't as damaged.

It's rumored ESM equipment is on board too and the MMW radar is usable also for land targets. It's an heavier brother to Harpoon (calling it Harpoon II would be nice) in one ton / two thousand libre class even without the booster installed on naval (RGM) version. Price maybe is higher around 5 million per piece. Amazing all-around munition you could use against everything up to 250 nm range from ships, but from planes for such stationary targets I would prefer the extra 250 nm range of the AGM-158B version and no escort.

    the Rafale is kinda a F/A 18 at his top/last generation (Superhornet?)
    The French Air and Space Army/Forcr doesn't have stealth fighter, like the F22 or the F35.
    So we fly under the level of radar, and it works.
    S400 isn't a problem if you fly under "I don't know how many" - feet.
    Also, the stealth bomb you used ad the end might be okay on the F/A 18?
    So, you fly near Sebastopol, low, until the time when you can all choose a different target, and then you turn back, while the modern stealth missile are going to the ship without being seen or targeted by S400 and the other small AA defense.
    And I think it might be even better with F35, to firstly destroy Anti Air defense, then the ship.

    A drone mod would be pretty cool.
    I think it's established now, without a doubt that drones has a place in the battlefield, and I got to say, I am curious how GR would handle dealing with drones. Driving them and trying to defend against them.

      I have seen GR use a drone swarm or two before, they fly like semi-smart cruise missiles.

      @@BlokeOnAMotorbike I was thinking more like manned vehicles. Like the Bayraktar or those smaller ones dropping nades.
      Something you pilot. (that series where they play a carrier comes to mind.) But in DCS, because its probably the only way to simulate modern battles.
      One scenario could be defending against iranian kamikaze drones attacking oil refineries in the gulf.
      Drones are not very capable compared to their bigger manned cousins, but at the same time, there is really nothing designed to shoot down drones, in service. Because of that, they are incredible effective. So it would be interesting to see if GR can come up with something to defend against drones.

      @@lordsqueak GR's video is entitled "REALISTIC Iranian Combined Gunboat, Missile & Drone Swarm vs US Carrier Group (Naval 53) | DCS" (for some reason this channel or RUclips or something won't let me paste a link TO A RUclips VIDEO in here)
