Joe, Dave, thanks for giving us a bit of retro-happiness every other week.
This thing you do, it means a lot for some of us, and even when going through Dark times, you help us get through the night.
Thanks a million from this fan.

      Game Sack
Totally agreed. this show has slowly become one of my favorites, which is odd. I have no idea why this show I have slowly grown to like more and more where others I either immediately like or dislike. I think it's the consistency that you guys have as well as getting to know your individual personalities. I think you guys also manage to tackle games that are outside the normal purview of what people tend to feature on these sites. I especially like it when you hit Japanese games or obscure imports.

We used to play Tekken 5 in 480p 16:9 on our (big for the time) 32" HDTV with our good arcade controller pads and save a hell of a lot of quarters.. Awesome memories.....

"I don't ever remember seeing any other NES game doing this."

Strangely enough, I never had any problems with the third stage as a kid. I could beat the Turbo Tunnel pretty consistently, and actually kind of enjoyed it! Maybe I was a masochistic child, I dunno. ;)
The stage that always slipped me up was the snakes. I did beat the snakes a few times, but that was uuuusually where my game would come to an end. And in Battletoads in Battlemaniacs on the SNES, that was ALWAYS where my game would come to an end. Try as I might, I never once beat the snake stage in that game.

So glad to see Dave's smashed Game Boy (kind of) patched up!
Digitized voice in video games has always been a fascination of mine, dating back to my early experiences with Wizard of Wor, GORF, and the Gorgar pinball machine. We tend to take voice for granted now, but back in the 80s and early 90s-- before CD-ROM tech-- hearing voice in home video game systems was really cool to me.
SEGA's Sports Talk tech was some of my favorite use of voice in the 16-bit era; as a sports fan, hearing legitimate play-by-play for baseball and football was really cool. (Sadly, no hockey.) While the announcer did fall behind the pace of the games at times, the emotion was just over-the-top enough to excite and it added another dimension of realism to a genre of games that was always looking to be closer to the actual events themselves.
Thanks for another great episode-- and for teaching me what "interlacing" is. (Yeah, I could have looked it up, but this was better.) Hopefully Joe's bumps & bruises from the Great Console Revolt heal up soon. ;)

Atari 2600 "Solaris" could be the most console-pushing game ever. Remember that it's on a system that was designed to play stuff like "Combat" and "Breakout."

Here's a fun fact that song in the Intro to Tales of Phantasia is actually called The Dream Will Never Die or in Japanese " Yume-wa Owaranai". Sung by famed Japanese pop song icon Yukari Yoshida. As a matter of fact it became such a hit they even released the song as single album but only in its native Japan. The more you know.

Another game that pushes the system's limits is Toy Story on the Sega Genesis. There's one level where Woody is putting the Squeeze Toy Aliens back in the rocket ship in a first person perspective. Sure it came out really late in the Genesis life cycle (1996), but it still looks really impressive.

SMB3 and Kirby used add on chips as well in their cartridges to improve their graphics on the NES. This means Starfox, StuntRace, Doom and Yoshi's Island using the FX chip would not be classified as cheating; same with Virtua Racing's 3d chip on the Genesis.
Actually there was a good number of SNES games as well that used various enhancement chips to get past the limitations of the system.

    • @wiggy8912
      @wiggy8912 4 года назад +2

Not quite. The NES didn’t allow for additional processors to be addressed from a cart. What you’re referring to on NES carts are memory mappers. They just help shuffle around data and chop it into the bite-sized pieces that the NES can manage.

My picks for games that push their platforms:
    Neo-Geo -
Metal Slug 3 (amazingly detailed pixel art, huge bosses, and almost no slowdown)
    SNES -
Donkey Kong Country (great pre-rendered animations on the characters, many people thought it was utilizing an FX chip, which it wasn't).
    PS2 -
God of War 2 (already discussed. Huge detailed environments)
    PS Vita -
Killzone Mercenary (Playing this on the PSTV one might mistake this for a PS3 game at first glance. It's hard to believe it's a portable game!)
    Xbox -
Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions (For a launch title the game still holds up. It utilizes a lot of neat filters and camera effects.)
    Atari Lynx -
S.T.U.N. Runner (awesome and authentic arcade port programmed using the arcade source code.)
    Genesis -
Aladdin (the animation still holds up well)
    PS3 -
The Last of Us and Uncharted 3 push the system beyond what many people thought was possible.
As far as high quality music on the SNES I recommend these:
    Plok (Tim & Geoff Follin)
    Spider-Man vs Xmen (Tim Follin)
    DKC (David Wise)
    Super Bomberman 4 & 5 (SFC)
    Actraiser (Yuzo)
    Super Adventure Island (Yuzo)
    Final Fantasy II

Easily one of my favorite Games Sack episodes yet, I was really impressed with all the information you gathered, I really enjoyed the part where you compared Gran Turismo 4, on 480p vs 1080i. One of my favorite things about Game Sack is how you guys manage to be informative and funny, since you manage to keep an audience with you for a whole HALF-HOUR that's an eternity in internet time! One other Super FX game that might be worth mentioning in a future episode is VorteX, a SNES game that I guess was originally supposed to use the Transformers license? It's a frustrating game, but it's neat to be able to transform at will among four different types of machines (even if it's fairly clunky due to the control combinations you have to memorize for each one), and it's also neat to have fully 3D environments that are fully explorable on the SNES -- and unlike Stunt Race FX, they take up the whole screen and aren't confusing, even if they also aren't particularly pretty.
VorteX also has one of the best soundtracks on the SNES, as far as I'm concerned. Honestly, it's worth playing just for the music. The first stage theme, if you let it play all the way through, is a techno masterpiece that doesn't loop until it's been going for over 7 or 8 minutes, and it sounds absolutely amazing. Whether or not the game shows off what the SNES can do graphically more than titles like Star Fox is debatable, but aurally, it absolutely shows what the SNES is capable of in every way.

Wyrdwad I would definitely agree on the soundtrack, it is very good, but the game isn't really pushing the Snes in the first level (mainly due to no background bar a few stars). Pretty good in level 2 but still no real draw distance. Forgotten super fx games such as Dirt racer FX pushed the system much more, had a decent draw distance and much improved polygons over poor old Stunt race FX. I think Vortex, Dirt trax FX and Winter Gold were windowed/bordered ( At least here in the UK ) Anyway, good to see you commenting as usual, Definitely not disagreeing with you, just adding more options.

Snes Doom is definitively not the smoothest version; probably one of the worst (3DO being the worst outside the music), but I like the Snes version because it's very complete with almost every episodes levels intact and extra geometry (the pillars in the armor room in E1M1, absent from the jaguar ports) and most traps are still active (crushers), the dude who coded this game did an amazing job.

Silly Joe. You don't need to switch discs in the middle of your adventure in the PS1 version of Resident Evil 2. Each disc covers a character, so you can play through the entire game as one character on one disc, then change discs to play the same scenario from the other character's perspective, or play the alternate scenario or whatever it's called. That game was interesting with the way it handled characters, scenarios, and bonus characters. I remember needing something like 8 (of 15) memory card blocks being dedicated to Resi 2 to unlock Tofu. Good times.
Anyway, what was I saying? Oh yeah! Great work Joe, you too Dave!

yes, the ps2 only upscales games to 1080i there aren't rendered internally in hi-res like true 1080i/720p of the xbox games. However, it can do 480p even if it was more difficult to do in comparison to DC , GCN and XBOX.Also i know that many ps2 games are rendered in lower than 6480x480i (many games used 512x448i/640x448i or between 320 to 640x240p like "ICO", for example...).

The cartridge bus on the SNES actually had lines for video and audio output from the cartridge (I mean PCM samples and digital pixels and not analog signals). Graphics output from the Super FX chip was displayed as an additional 256 color graphics layer which is why Yoshi's Island's 2D graphics looked so much better than other SNES games.
The Super FX was further developed into the ARC chip (Argonaut RISC core) which found some success in mobile devices.

    • @nikodem123asdf
      @nikodem123asdf 9 лет назад +3

wickedcaitsith The hidden mode isnt 1080i, it's actually just 480p rendered at hull horizontal resolution back buffer which is still pretty damn neat.
Normally GOW2 runs at reduced horizontal resolution like most PS2 titles(it's not 640 on 448 it's more like 512 on 448) that is being stretched by the front buffer to maintain the correct aspect ratio.
I guess they havent fully tested the full resolution mode so they just implemented it as an extra. There is a difference in the graphics but it's very slight mostly less noticeable aliasing.

    • @nikodem123asdf
      @nikodem123asdf 9 лет назад +1

All things considered the first GOW actually used even higher internal resolution, it was close to 720p (not quite) you cant access it by normal means you need to have a program that allows you to scale games to custom resolutions. The internal resolution was made higher than the output resolution to minimize jaggedness of the image which worked fantastically.

I always thought the Warriors for the PS2 pushed it well. You wouldn't expect a licensed game to come out in 2005 on a movie that hit theaters in 1979, much less made by rockstar, but it's here, and the cutscenes are beautiful. I honestly think of their cutscenes before L.A Noire when I think of good lip sync and quality. The game is really a standard 3-D beat em up, but it has that signature rockstar open world and even an expanded universe. It really does the movie justice.

The weird thing about the PS2 and 480p is that most later titles CAN support it due to being rendered in full height frames as oppose to field rendered like many of early titles but they just lack the mode to do so.
It can be implemented in them with freemcboot and GSM or Xploder HD, The results may be mixed but where it works it's the definitive way of playing PS2 on a HDTV, also makes recording and editing those games SO MUCH less of a pain.

Speech in games would deserve a separate episode.
As for games that pushed the hardware: Sonic 2 runs in 480i in its 2-player mode. (Same for Combat Cars btw.) What is rather mind-blowing about Sonic 2 is that it showed that the MD could basically run two Sonic 1s simultaneously at once.
Herzog Zwei is the first MD game with split-screen I think, basically running the overhead stages from Thunder Force 2 twice at once (although not in 480i).
Streets of Rage 2 and Bare Knuckle III are rather neat technically with tons of huge highly detailed sprites on screen at once. BK3 even goes as far as temporarily sending enemy characters out of screen to prevent flicker or slowdown.
Streets of Rage 2 in Mania difficulty is just totally insane with how many sprites on screen there are, especially Stage 7's elevator stage. There is some minor slowdown and flicker though.
The PCM in SOR2/BK3 is also quite clear in my opinion.
Monsterworld IV has perhaps the best visuals on MD in terms of color usage, especially some later stages. Dynamite Headdy looks very nice as well. As does Eliminate Down.
Thunder Force IV's bosses always were incredibly impressive to me.
The parallax/line scrolling in Sonic (JP), Gleylancer, Thunder Force IV, and Eliminate Down is very impressive.
A ton of clear voice samples in Dune II
The Sports Talk Baseball and Joe Montana games by Sega had live commentary throughout the game thanks to ESS Technology's speech routines.
FIFA Soccer tried to recreate the experience of a live audience
Toy Story's title screen used a standard Amiga mod player and mixed the channels down (all done real-time in software) before playing it through the Genesis' PCM channel.
Games like Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe 1, Sonic 1, and Super Mario World should receive rewards for squeezing the most out of mere 4 Mbit (!).
Street Racer has 4-player split screen all in software.
Adventures of Batman & Robin is really quite impressive technically
Puggsy has a nice cinematic opening - using prerendered graphics (long before Donkey Kong Country)
I heard good things about the 3d levels in Novotrade's Exo-Squad on MD but have yet to try it.
ResQ's bonus stages look A LOT like Star Fox on MD - without the SFX chip!
Formula One, Kawasaki Superbike, F1 World Championship by Domark all use the Vroom engine which is mostly polygonal
Similar applies to Newman Haas IndyCar Featuring Nigel Mansell
Road Rash actually scales trackside objects in real-time.
Some games by EA like Skitchin or some of those scored by Tommy Tallarico use the PCM channel for instruments (other than just percussion)
Shadow Dancer Stage 1: Burning Downtown and Thunder Force III Stage 2: Gorgon look great!
On Master System Power Strike II and Sagaia are the most impressive games imho.
Aladdin has nice line scrolling similar to Street Fighter II
Jurassic Park has nice parallax scrolling.
The Flash has an excellent soundtrack (by Jeroen Tell)
Same for Batman Returns (by Yuzo Koshiro & Motohiro Kawashima)
Sonic 1 is incredible but Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd in Miracle World are really impressive as well.
On Saturn Virtua Fighter 2 and Dead or Alive run in High Res, Panzer Draagoon zwei in 16:9, mid-res and it seems to be one of the few games to use the sound chip for the music instead of CDDA (might also be the case with Legend of Oasis and Shinobi Legions).
On Dreamcast I was most impressed with Giga Wing 2, Ikaruga, Under Defeat, and REZ. Virtua Tennis and Power Stone looked extremely detailed to me as well.
I also heard good things about F355 and Le Mans.
On NES Gimmick! is quite impressive (much like Kirby and Mario Bros. 3).
It's incredible how they recreated Stage 1 in TMNT: The Arcade Game!
On SNES Axelay isn't too shabby either.
I've always been a fan of F-Zero even though its just using a regular hardware feature. The game never got improved upon by anything on SNES that came after it imho.
The first stage in Vampire's Kiss is mind blowing!

Game Sack you can mod your NES really easy to accept differtent regions: you just have to disconnect one specific foot of the chip that runs the region test. look it up, it's so easy that even I, as a comlplete failure when it comes to electronics, have managed to do this.
Edit: oh, maybe you already know that, but have a problem with running elite because of the Frequency-difference between the 60 hz. US(NTSC)-NES and the 50 hz. EUR(PAL)-NES. Getting rid of this difference would need more elaborate modding.

    • @Nukle0n
      @Nukle0n 9 лет назад +1

Cynic667 It's not a problem with region locking, the problem is that the game NEEDS to run in 50hz mode, otherwise the program code shits itself, and you can't mod a US NES to do that, you need a European system.
