- State Route 504 near Coldwater Lake was closed both ways because of a landslide that stranded about 12 people and a dog overnight. The group slept in their cars at the at Johnson Ridge Observatory. They were extracted and flown out via helicopter by King County Search and Rescue.
Aaron Yanez with the Washington State Department of Transportation said the slide happened near milepost 49 just after 9 p.m. Sunday night. Yanez said they believe one of the people stranded called in the slide after coming face to face with it on their drive back from Mount St. Helens. Scientists think that a rapid change in weather led to this massive landslide.

Glad to hear voices that could be understood and not sounding like a robot reporting from a bathroom🎉
Cool
Holy shit! I was there with my mother and sister just a few hours before this happened!
They have to rebuild it. Let’s just say ummm this time NEXT YR if we are lucky.
Reminds me of the mud flow after Mt St Hellens blew in Washington, USA
How are they getting the vehicles out that are on the other side.A lot of people left their vehicles up there..
Wow still power after all these year.I was at the eruption.
That would be a PTA to have to leave your car/truck up there for the next year or two until it’s fixed😂
More slides to come
Some volcanoes are very weak. They can contain layers of ash (pulverized lava) which can slide downhill when wet. It looks like that happened here, and no doubt it will happen again, either in the same place or elsewhere. I'm glad nobody was on the road when it it came down. .
Watch as this turns into a permanent closure of the upper observatory. This road could be repaired in a matter of days. A better question would be: where is the promised public access to the river?
No fat shaming going on at KGW News, that's for sure.
"Closed in both directions"
😶
Anyone with half a brain can see that.
Start digging the rivers and creeks or this will get worse 😮😮
We can't fish Coldwater lake because it's to dangerous but they let this reporter right up to the slide. This is BS. Do the locals a favor and open the lake or keep everyone but the worker Out!!!
I can’t believe this Guy gets paid to tell us that the water is damaged the road and some kind of liquidy lubricated and that’s why the highway Wash away. I hope he’s not in charge of rebuilding it where is the experts?
"water is damaged the road and some kind of liquidy lubricated?"
He's a professor of geology, dummy. He doesn't get paid to tell us that specifically. They just brought him in for his insight on how the abundance of water in the soil affected the size and consistency of the landslide.
Spoken like a man who's never said "some kind of liquidly lubricated" in his life, @@aidankeller1717 .
Get out there and pan for gold under that soil.
Good report by Daisy Caballero! Too bad the anchor-person can't bother to learn to say her name properly... it's NOT "Caby-ero". (Try pronouncing it Caba-yero if you can't roll your r's).
capybara
Nah, she said HER OWN NAME correctly. 🙄
@@Don_ECHOguy : 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
This is due to the climate crisis!
