I was introduced to his music from the electric company as a kid. Never knew who he was until RUclips came around and I was a mom in 2009. We listened to all of his stuff when my kids were learning the piano to inspire them. They didn't understand much of it -how dark it was- but they knew he was funny!
There are some songs of his that I fear I will never find. I don't know if some even have any recordings to be found. Some of the songs here by him I had never even heard before.
Happiest of birthdays, Dr Tom Lehrer! You did so much to keep me sane (once I found it in the Irish Ballad) through my school years and even today, nothing brings a grin to me and lightens my mood like you. I think of you often, and hope you are well, whatever the circumstances. Many blessings
Happy birthday, Mr Lehrer. I have been enjoying you since the sixties. You are just as cleaver and magical of your talents to the piano as you have ever been. I love you and keep you in my prayers. You deserve the best because you are the best.
Thanks for sharing, he's such a treasure! BTW, have you considered recording the relatively few number of his songs that have no existing recordings? He gives us all complete permission to do as we please with them. Please, please, go for it!
Where would one find his songs that don't yet have recordings? I am assumIng these would be in sheet music form available somewhere? I would be honored to give them a proper try!
@@sOdEeP406mUsIc tomlehrersongs.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/a-man-on-the-moon.pdf Here's the best one that fits that category. The lyrics are SO clever, but I can't find any recordings or even sheet music anywhere.
If I could (not allowed in my family even to royals) I would bow down to Mr. Lehrer. Absolute honesty: if not for Mr. Lehrer’s sarcastic and subtle encouragement to look further into science, I don’t know where I’d be. Gee thanks, I’m now addicted to PubMed and Google Scholar, etc. I go right down that rabbit hole. I can’t stop myself from clicking on those damned references (much more addictive than RUclips.) I still can’t do math worth crap, sorry sir. I have pure number dyslexia and can’t even balance my checkbook but weirdly can add up my grocery bill in my head (leave out the dog treats.) I ALMOST wish I hadn’t wiped that mental erasable board in my brain after all those math based classes I thought were useless. Nah. I got my father lost in the mountains of NC because I thought my exit was 13. I wish I could be even half as positively influential as Mr. Lehrer ( and my danged nuclear chemist sister in law, who won “The Elements” contest. Plotting revenge…
Nice, thanks for sharing! Have you thought about recording his 'lost' songs? i.e. they're no longer available in audio format. He's given us all carte blanche permission to record them, but I don't have the voice. You do!
I can't recall less inspired renditions of TL songs. Are these Tom's friends? The singer reminds of someone who is teaching about a subject he's never experienced... Academically distant. Anyway.... Upon reading the comments, I wonder what Mr Leher, were he writing today, would make of predictive text, its detrimental dumbing down of language and in turn, what would appear to be, our general acceptance of the disastrous, deleterious impact on communication in a world that purports to value understanding above all else. XoXo
You nailed it, my friend. You should know that TL is actually my father. We quarreled, I changed my name, refused to sing his songs ... but when he placed them all in the public domain, thus scotching my chance at a substantial inheritance, I took my revenge. And you figured it out!
Another Allan Sherman wannabe, but not as funny, clever or enduring. Tried to be Stan Freberg but couldn't get hired and ended up teaching. Fredo Freberg.
That's a joke right? You got it backwards pal. Allan Sherman? Please. The next song Sherman writes that makes me laugh... will be the first. And that's not likely to happen at this point. Lehrer was a genius. Not only composed the brilliant lyrics but the tunes and intros as well. Nice try.

And today he's 96
I had an added attraction for my monthly edition of MAD magazine. They included a Lehrer
song, and I played piano.What a blast.
Tom Lehere was way ahead of his time. Saw him many many years ago at a small club on Cape Cod. Now at 85 i still enjoy his genius. Sherry Starr

I'm very happy to of found this
Tom would not approve of your English. "So happy to HAVE found this.

A major inspiration
I can't recall less inspired renditions of TL songs. Are these Tom's friends? The singer reminds of someone who is teaching about a subject he's never experienced... Academically distant.

Hilarious!
Does Byron have any relation to Harry?
Much closer to Birgit, I'm afraid.
Did he have children
He did not - one reason he put all his songs into the public domain.

Are you a wannabe Siskel and Ebert?
