Benching Fred Lane at the start or suspending him for missing the team flight? No problem. Benching/suspending him for showing no remorse? Completely justified. Dom Capers changing his mind? That makes him look wishy-washy unless he had a reason like Lane mouthing off to him on the sidelines or showing a prima donna attitude on the bench. But keeping him on the bench because "we had a rhythm going" and that rhythm involved no rushes for more than four yards? Like you said, "I'm sorry: WHAT?!" No wonder Capers was fired after the season. That decision was Ugly with a capital U!
This is very similar to what happened 5 years later with legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson & David Beckham with Man United during the away leg of their Champions League quarterfinal vs Real Madrid. Beckham was not on the field at all for this match, heck he wasn't even on the bench. This is because Ferguson suspended Beckham because Beckham in his view had gotten too big off the field when it came to his personality (especially with endorsement deals with Adidas & Pepsi) & Ferguson felt as though it was negatively affecting Beckham's play. Ferguson also had major beef with Beckham's wife Victoria who he felt was a negative influence on him. Add to this the almost daily rumors in the UK media about Beckham leaving at the end of the season for Real Madrid & Ferguson felt justified in his view in not playing him even though Beckham was one of Man United's best players. However like this, it backfired badly as Man United got completely outplayed and lost 3-1. Even though they won the home leg 4-3 with Beckham scoring twice, it was not enough to avoid elimination as Man United allowed Brazilian Ronaldo to score a hat trick. The relationship between Beckham & Ferguson never recovered & Beckham did indeed leave for Real Madrid at the end of the season.
Lane made himself look bad by not showing remorse. With that said, Capers' reasoning for not following through with his plan based on what he said after the game made no damn sense. The only rhythm the Panthers' offense had was through Steve Beuerlein slinging the pigskin so well. It sure wasn't due to the "rushing attack." No wonder the Panthers had their first double-figure-loss season in '98.
98 panthers were a mess. Kerry Collins, their 1st draft pick in franchise history got cut and the offseason signing of Sean Gilbert off a franchise tag cost them 2 future 1sts (1999 and 2000)
Lane saying that to the reporter was probably him being salty. The dude was told he'd be in the game and then had to sit and watch. He's basically having the same reaction that this video is having to the decision.
Oh,boy! We have two teams whose Coaches are notorious for their Clock management and I wonder If anything can get any worse-this Logic for benching the player made No sense-no wonder they fired The coach! Anyway, I thought we Were going to talk about these teams Tonight who lost their games ina in a Pair of upsets!
Perhaps the reason why he was late or his nonchalant attitude about it might something to with his wife. Who was allegedly abusive towards him and ended up being convicted of murdering him years later. Lane’s mind might not have been right. Sure he could told the Panthers about it, but men that come forward to say that they’re being abused in many cases receive ridicule instead of help. And that in today’s world imagine how it was in 1998.
Ok just have to say this. Panthers need to change it up. Colors, logo. Something. Florida Panthers, nhl team and way better sport, did a wonderful change.

Kerry Collins was an alcoholic and was sent to rehab
He also told coach capers that he was not happy and his heart was not in it anymore. He also went to the saints that year
That 1999 pick that end up going to Washington was the infamous #5 pick that went to the Saints.
I had totally forgotten about the cam story with the tie
The disgusting season of 1998 for the panthers. Poor Steve beurlein
I think Fred Lane is passed away his girlfriend killed him
Wife

I'll be he stayed benched for shooting his mouth off. He probably blamed everyone but himself for missing the flight.
I have flown over 100 times in the last 3 years and I have never missed a plane.
No, for what? This feels like the cousin comment to Ricky Watters "For who? For what?"
why do i get the feeling reich might do some dumb shit like this sunday?

I still think the necktie benching was more stupid. Cam got benched for wearing one of his ugly sweaters.
Team 0-5 Lane was telling the truth lol

Fair punishment is Caper benching Lane for the 1st quarter lesson learn
It got real bad by 98 very bad smh not as bad as 1 and 15 but bad enough
But he was a good assistant coach with the Steelers?!?!🤨
first
Fred Lanes wife permanently suspended him in 2000
Not even funny!🥵
