Your dad's right, Glory. I felt the same way he does, as far as pushing my daughters to go to college. I wanted them to decide what direction they took in life. As with many things, I didn't want to raise them the way I was raised but with support in whatever they chose.

Glory, your dad dropped some very sound truth on you in that car ride. You're 100% right. College isn't necessary for everyone or everything. The skill sets you're developing by being in the world, working and dealing with people, and negotiating life in general while applying the strong values you obviously hold dear will serve you far better in life than that piece of paper and a load of debt. You're on your way, lady. You're on your way. Oh, and as a dad, I've always instilled in my daughter her great value. Don't sell yourself cheap to any boy. There's a man out there specifically for you who will show you all the same care and honor your dad does.

A college degree is really a ticket into certain jobs. You may not actually apply what you learned in college in a job, but that depends on your profession. The degree does provide an indication of your ability to learn and your dedication, which is what employers are really looking for.

    • @bxd7793
      @bxd7793 Месяц назад +2

Yes. The college degree shows that you can apply yourself to a focused task and push through things that are uncomfortable and new and difficult, challenging yourself to achieve beyond your comfort zone. Studying so hard and making it through the rigor of academic life is so difficult but it tests you and forces you to prove yourself and find happiness in the little things. I hope glory can still do this despite spending her college age years in overwhelmingly beautiful places. The cup of coffee before work on a rainy day is beautiful if you know how to see it that way, and college helped me to develop the skills to enjoy that as well as my trips abroad or days I spend on the beach.

Glory… I went to university, did dorm /social life at university. I went back to university over the years and now have a doctorate. I can tell you it was such a waste of time and money. I do not keep in touch with anyone that I’ve met in college. I couldn’t even tell you my roommate’s name. Everyone I know that went to college/university does not keep in touch with anyone from those years. At all.
The friends I do have and keep in touch with are from middle and high school.
It’s interesting, too, that a lot of people my age and older look back and wish they’d taken more time to travel and figure out who they are before making major life decisions (like going to college and picking a major, getting into student loan debt).
I think it’s great that you’re taking this time to travel around, have flexibility to do things that are important to you while also learning about yourself.
Someday, you’ll look back on this time and be thankful for it.
Lastly, your camera work is great! Renee said you do their Instagram as well; you do amazing work. Definitely a marketable skill that can be done from anywhere.

So many scholarships out there. You can go to a vocational school and come out with a skill that you like and can make a great living and not have to pick coffee beans at q1. Also if you pick the right job skill you can travel a lot . All of my cousins are college grads and travel all around the world. Basically it’s your choice but you might want to look further down the road when you may need to support yourself while being older one day.

I went to college in the 80’s and it was a great experience. Figured out a lot and learned to be an adult. At that time pay was considerably more with a degree. Times have changed!!! Certainly don’t need it for tons of jobs. I think it makes connections hard for young people to not have that group and those experiences. Positives and negatives with both. The debt is huge now for school which is really unfortunate. Keep at it. Love seeing your experiences!

      @@jim7082 You're right. I didn't say that.
Choosing to not do something is just as important as doing something to make progress on meeting a goal.
If you choose to use the bridge to cross the creek, rather than stepping on wet slippery stones to cross the same creek means that you made the choice of going one way and not the other. The goal, crossing the creek, was made by a simple yes or no decision; to do, or not to do are parts of every choice and decision.

college can be a major rip off unless you are going to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer etc. Hell my daddy quit school when he was in 10th grade back in the 50's and joined the army. He ended up being the absolute best electrician and machinist in the entire plant he worked. He was an ENGINEER. The company started a thing where monthly they would give an employee a bonus for a money saving idea and implementation. Well my dad won it 2 months in a row. They stopped it because the man was a ROCK STAR! Glory...i watch all your stories you rock!

To be a successful person in life, you do not necessarily need a college degree. However, you can only follow certain career path with a college degree and proper university education. For example, you cannot be a self taught medical doctor. If what you'd like to make a career out of in life does not require it, and you know how to figure it out, then don't get a debt loaded degree.

Hi Glory, thank you for touching on this topic. No-one should have to justify why they didn’t go to college. I took the school of life route too but ended up doing some industry relevant study when I was 29. I’ve done very well but it would have been a whole lot easier with the expensive piece of paper that indicated I had been to college . Hopefully times are changing. My company did a survey with staff last year about their college degrees, relevancy to job etc. we now have a program that specifically takes people direct from school and trains on the job. As admirable as this is, I am acutely aware how much value is still placed on those framed pieces of paper people have on the wall gathering dust. i have recently moved my youngest son into a college dorm. i have to admit I had a lot of envy as I drove away. I personally feel there is no right or wrong as long as you have a growth mindset and experience new things. When i know what your passion is then just take some relevant study so it is meaningful to you.

No need to decide anything now, if you’re happy now that’s all that matters. Many many people don’t go to university, then may decide to go later or not. As someone who got my bachelor’s degree, the time I’ve spent out of school has been so important for actually figuring out what I want to do/where I want to go. As long as you’re present with yourself and honoring what you want/need to do in the moment, you don’t need to explain your decisions to anyone. You’re going to change and grow a LOT in the next 5 years, no degree required :)
Recently (and briefly) I had a therapist my age. She went the academic path, got her advanced degrees, all the while I was struggling with my mental health/addictions/abusive relationships. I’m a counselor now, helping others struggling with addiction, and realizing my experience was my master’s degree, and hey if I want to go back to school and get my masters in counseling, I can. But the time you’re not in school is so important to develop that relationship with yourself.

Going to college straight out of high school often helps with maturity which is not something that you need to worry about, at all. The good thing is that if you find out that you need a degree for another vocation you become interested in, college is there waiting for you. I think you will find that your perspective on college and how you learn will be so much different in a classroom now that you have a whole host of real world experiences to draw from. I appreciate the time you put into your videos.

College is and can be incredibly useful without going into a professional trade (e.g., Medicine, Business, or Law). In my experience, it was a great way for me to learn more about myself, and take classes that were interdisciplinary to provide a framework of thinking. How do you approach problems? Engage in civil discourse in a way that propels your opinion or understanding of a given issue. Your dad is right in the sense that you can learn some of it on your own; however, you can't forget the fact that we live in a world that a bachelors is the baseline for most employers. Being a forever learner / up-skilling as the world / technology changes is incredibly important; the zeal and tenacity to forge your own-path is incredibly important. We aren't living in our parents' years. At the end, the one's that know will always be a bit scrappy and figure it out. Sending good vibes from Chicago!

Wise father! There are a number of ways to obtain trade school, 2-year or 4-year college education without racking up debt. Many programs combine trade school with a 2-year degree.
Take a Strong-Campbell Interest Survey to find careers which match your interests. If the top careers are what you really want to do i.e., your dreams, figure out whether any of the aforementioned educational programs would help you meet your dreams, if not, it may still interest you to obtain training to provide good income doing something you like, even if only for security purposes.

Not everyone needs or should go to uni -- especially if they think it is mainly to make and keep friends. But if you want to practice a profession, many if not all of the require one or more college degrees. More important when you're in your 20s is to commit to something and honour that commitment to completing it. One can get great experience apprenticing as a baker, farmer or mechanic, but you have to commit to showing up everyday, for your contract. That commitment gives you the engagement that later produces a wealth of experience to draw upon in later life. When you've got too much freedom in your 20s it can work against you in later life, when you're 40 and people, banks and others ask what your employment experience and skills are. That isn't to say that people can't work independently in their 20s -authors, musicians, artists do. But that even in those occupations, schooling or some kind of mentoring matters.

I share your dad's views. very wise. the smarter way is go be an apprentice of whatever you want to do. Learn from the master of whatever it is you want to become.

Left for Navy at 17, stationed in Hawaii. College at age 30. Student loan paid off without government. College was a waste. Trade school would have been better. Need more mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, etc.

    Two separate comments:
    1) College is a way to compress many years of established knowledge into 4/6/8 years. That's not necessary in all endeavors. however.
    2) How did you get back up those cliffs? That ladder looked beyond sketchy.

If you have a degree (4 year) it can help you earn more or get promotions. The vocation field and academic degree may not be related but to the employer it equates to a level of commitment. Then they ask the question "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?". Like someone said here--It will be there when you are ready and you have a better idea what major you want to choose.
