    I had an instructor who literally stole my landings, because he straight up told me he needed the practice. He landed horribly. This was a CFII. I requested a new instructor immediately after we landed.

      Yeah unfortunately it is too common that we have to bring it up. That's why we try to share bad experiences so that those that first enter the field can notice these traits and take action if possible.

      When I had my first ever student I realized that I didn't really know how to land. I couldn't reliably show repeatability. How did I overcome this? Easy. I sat down and analyzed all parts of the short final and flare. I then talked my students through the landing and gave them repeatable points to follow. Example of one of the points: "Start your flare at half the wingspan which is the roof of that building." It was incidentally same height as a building near the threshold. I never had to steal any landings. I would make absolute perfect landings by using my own pointers. One landing per student during first landing session was enough and it was just proof that theory actually works when applied. I used the same logic for all flight maneuvers. The only time I ever took the controls was when I was asked to demonstrate something a "second" time. As a Captain on the Airbus A380 I simply read the Airbus instructions on flare technique, which includes pitch rate, attitude, start of flare, power reduction altitude, and all the exact same things I had taught 35 years ago. Every landing exactly the same. The folks who "steal" landings are simply lazy. They can't be bothered to use their brain to figure things out, so they practice without thought until it sort of works. You did well switching instructors.

      💯 This ☝️I only had one instructor and his boss who blatantly did this. The CFI stole alot of landings and time from me. His landings were horrible. I would say "do as I say not as I do" everytime. 😂 I fired them. They also did some really bad stuff.

    Despite working for a small mom & pop school I did an average 80+ hours per month and reached Gold Seal. How? I focused 100% on the student. I tailored lessons to their alertness level on the day and level of lesson preparation. I did not focus on making them pass a check ride. I focused ONLY on making them better pilots & to have all the tools required to continue as safe and proficient pilots after training. I allowed them to solo later than most other instructors in the school. They all thanked me for it because they soloed when ready to handle an emergency properly. This all worked in my favor and prospective students asked specifically for me, or switched to flying with me, which ultimately gave me more flight hours per month than any other instructor on the field.

      Great story Anders! The key to succeeding in any business is to genuinely care about the other person. Good things happen to those that give naturally, even when giving doesn't yield immediate return eventually it will! 🤝

    The government created this model with the 1500 hour rule. All instructors I find our relatively young pilots desperate for their hours. They teach poorly and do not care about the students because everyone is cutthroat about 1500.

    As a student pilot, I get to the plane, if available, 30min before my flight time and note the Hobbs meter while doing my preflight. While I completely trust my instructor, I am making sure I am getting what I am paying for. This is expensive as it is and I want every dollar to be accounted for.

    I agree 100 percent. I went to flight school 24 years ago and I never had an instructor pad their logbook with regards to hours. But what my flight school did do was pad linstructors debriefing time. So, if we'd debrief for half an hour then we'd put down .5 hrs. But, if we did debrief at all I'd have to put down .3 because the school wanted to make sure we the instructors were always debriefing after the flights. And there were so many times when the flight was good and we both wanted to get out of there so we just talked about it while we were getting out of the plane but it was like, "good flight I'll see you tomorrow". Then he'd sign my logbook and I'd leave. However I was still getting charged for .3 hours eventhough we might not have even discussed the flight afterwards. One instructor thought it was bs so when we'd have a long debrief she'd still put .3 though it should've been like .7. If an instructor would've tried to pad hours by doing something unnecessary and I caught onto it, it would've stopped real quick. I went through and paid for flight school so I know how much it costs so I never did that to any student I ever had. I did know an instructor that would pad their logbook with student pilots by doing a x-cross country that was 75 to 90nm away instead of just going to an airport 50 nm away.

    I too had my own experience with a particular instructor. Who would continuously repeaded my lessons, even my cross country and told me I would never pass my instrument. Once I started complaining, all his student started to talk, they had same issues, he got fired! I went on to pass all my license and rating first try. I came to understand he had failed through the entire flight program. Every rating for him was a resat. He fail IR like twice.

  • @darius6984
    @darius6984 Год назад +1

    To give some context, as soon as my flight school teaches students how to preflight, what happens is from that point on, instructors say “go out and preflight,” but the issue is that I’m still paying for that time when I’m not with the instructor. Is this standard across flight schools? Even if they’re getting a quick bite to eat or using the bathroom, the time is ticking, and I’m the one paying for it. Doesn’t seem fair.

    • @rn2811
      @rn2811 Год назад +1

      If your CFI trained you on how to conduct a proper preflight inspection why would you need him to stand over you while you do it since most CFI’s compensation is off the Hobbs. A lot of them also go from student to student throughout the day and have a limited meal and bathroom breaks so they eat when they can. So it’s perfectly normal to preflight the aircraft on your own.

    • @darius6984
      @darius6984 Год назад +1

      @@rn2811 My school charges based on two different categories of instructor time... 1 being instructor time based on the hobbs, and 2 being instructor time that's on the ground. At the end of the day, I pay for both. So the time that they said 'go out and preflight' is charged under ground instructor time. It's really annoying because it sometimes happens where I'm waiting for them to come out to the plane and I'm paying for that time (ground instructor time). What do you think?
