When CEO Akio Toyoda issued the company-wide decree, “No more boring cars,” he really meant it. This Prius is amazing.
And BZ4X is certainly ... interesting.

amazing, maybe only for a toyota. It's a pretty average car for any other brand.
As someone who hated the Prius, this one actually makes me want to buy one. It looks fantastic, and sadly we wont get the cool Yellow they showed it off in
For real? Man, that yellow was awesome! Why would they take it away?
You can repaint or wrap it in WHAT EVER COLOR your heart desires
The old Prius style is the reason why I bought a Honda Insight Hybrid instead. I would definitely consider a Prius now.
gonna lift my prius, add an offroad kit, and take it to the safari
@Miles Doyle Bot
Never thought I'd see the day I actually like the look of a Toyota Prius, but that flare fender and other line that swoops from the bottom of the back doors and goes up is very nice design. Great job to the design team.
Hopefully the new Toyotas follow this design change.
@@MBisFrenchy exactly, it would serve them well.
right?? its what completed it
oh pois, Toyota will continue these designs, their ev and ice showcase poster already have whole bunch of them with similar design aesthetic in mind. really cool stuffs
@@GBR9794 yes absolutely. I'm actually excited to see what they put out next.
Two reasons why hybrids like this have a role: 1) many apartment dwellers may not be able to charge an electric at home, and even if you have a house your electric wiring might not be able to support faster charging 2) in more rural areas public charging is hard to find so a longer trip may be tricky.
3) buy a 𝙏𝙀𝙎𝙇𝘼.
4)𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙪𝙢𝙗 to the real joy of life.
The reason why I’ve stayed to my gas powered vehicle-rural areas are full of lonely roads when you run out of charge at 2 am in the morning.
@@tesla-FUNboy did you not read his comments? It’s not always possible for charging.Tesla has also experienced a lot of quality control issues. With Toyota, that’s never an issue.
@@cahg3871 - tesla FUN boy probably did not read that, too busy having FUN
I've never had a problem finding some place to refuel my Prius and I've never had to wait an hour for it to refuel. I park on the street at home and I don't have chargers at work. Toyota is right for sticking to hybrids. If only hydrogen had received research efforts, we could have had a hydrogen generator at every gas station by now.
Toyota did an amazing job with the update on this generation. And the term "Car Enthusiast" is sometimes vague. Often it refers to people who like exotic, pretty, high performance (or all of the above) vehicles, but I think you can also be a car enthusiast for just _liking cars_ in general. And the reality is the vast majority of people are not buying expensive, high performance cars, nor can the majority of people afford electric cars yet. Most people just want an affordable, _reliable_ car, and that's where the Prius fits in. Making it look good and have more power will probably help them sell more of them to people who were on the fence about it because of lack of power and questionable looks before. Smart move on Toyota's part.
Thank you for taking the time to type that. Very well said.
A car with a CVT transmission will always be boring, and that’s what you usually get in a Toyota. Because their customers want to drive slowly and have a good fuel efficiency. That’s the opposite of what someone who likes to drive cars want. Toyota & Lexus owners will be the first to buy fully autonomous cars. They just don’t care about driving, they do it because they have to 😂
@@alfredtomey toyota themselves don't care about driving. And neither do the people that buy their fuckin cars. This is why I support Nissan and Honda and not Toyota. Better brands, better cars.
I hate it when “car guys” think they can decide whether you are a car guy or not just because of what you drive. It’s annoying to see people in comment sections saying “No car guys like EVs”, or “You’re not a car guy if you don’t daily a (insert loud obnoxious car). Maybe I want to daily something that’s comfortable and quiet. Not everything is about constant douching around and driving 30 over the speed limit. Car guys are people who like cars. Doesn’t have to be a loud Mustang or Charger. Your comment has earned a like! 👍🏻
@@UProductions457 Heh, thanks. Yeah, agreed - I've always gone with the simple view of "You like cars? - You're a car guy." Then just like everything else in life, that can divvy up into more specific sects of how/why people do, just as long as everyone recognizes that everyone else likes cars for _some_ reason.
Once this has the PHEV available it's looking really good. About 220hp and full running in EV mode for much of your daily driving and then still 50mpg+ for long trips. Just a really great solid practical car.
Will the ICE need to come on for heat with the PHEV?
@@FrankPerkins I don't know for the Prius. The only PHEV I know of with a heat pump is the Outlander and even then it seems to go back to engine heat below freezing.
What is PHEV ?
@@nemanjap8768 Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle. It's just a hybrid with a bigger battery so that it can run like an EV for a small distance but can still just use gas on a long trip.
I think half the reason people bought priuses was so they could drive in the carpool lane, I don't think they get this break anymore.
I love it. I think this is objectively the best car for most people who aren't into sports cars. And as far as performance, I am 100% sure that the vast majority of car enthusiasts could not out-run Ridge Chaser going full touge in this Prius. We already know no one can escape him in a Honda Fit. I don't put much stock in the judgements of spec sheet racers and parking enthusiasts. This car is on the top 5 of new cars I'd buy, if I was the sort to buy new cars.
@@skankhunt.042 ... wow
My late wife in Australia had a used 2003 Prius Series Two until she passed away in 2015. We both loved that car. I remember we drove it from Newcastle New South Wales to Ballarat in Victoria, a distance of some 1100 km, and we refueled only once. It also performed well on another trip to Victoria when we went to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup in 2013, and drove the Great Ocean Road, and returned home via northwest Victoria and midwestern New South Wales. On both trips we averaged about 4.5 L/100 km. I don't have a car or a license anymore but if I did I'd consider the new Prius on looks alone, knowing what the Prius offers in terms of driving ability.
Please accept my condolences, it sounds like you had good times.
@@JinKee Thank you! Yes we did! It was a great car.

As a former 2nd-gen Prius owner I am so excited to see that Toyota cares enough about this car still to make a new one that looks this good and has this much power.
The Prius has always been maligned by car enthusiasts for being ugly and slow, but to me it has always been maybe the single-best all-around car money can buy. They’re insanely reliable, insanely efficient, roomy, and practical in every way. And now they’re not ugly and slow anymore.
as an enthusist myself i have always seen the extreme value and appreciated in prius. i never even thought they were ugly either
Every taxi cab operator in my city agrees with you evan!
I have a 2nd gen Prius. If you can get over having an ugly slow car, it's simply the best, there was never any pretense about it being a fun enthusiast car
They need to make it to pass emission regulations, that’s the only reason they make them

I really hope that with the introduction of the new Prius, that Lexus will update the CT. The outgoing model is the same car as it was 12 years ago aside from minor interior and exterior changes, and with me owning a 2012 CT200h, I would love to see a new CT with the new Prius powertrain.
Isn’t the Lexus UX the replacement for the CT200? I agree, o would love to see a Lexus version of this new Prius but I doubt it will happen any time soon.
I grin every time I see one of those Lexus CT's. They're so rare around here. But nobody wants a hatchback Lexus
@@Alviniscute I saw a used one for sale awhile back at a dealer in Marion, Iowa, but that place known for selling problematic cars though(they had a Porsche Cayenne for only like $10k that sat on the lot for months for some reason)... so gotta wonder if that particular CT had battery issues or something. Anyhow, it was the first and only Lexus CT that I've ever seen in person, and it was actually a pretty good looking hatchback imo, I thought to myself "I'd totally buy one of those".
I do too. But regular people have ego issues, they need the extra SUV height so Americas can feel 'In CoMmAnD oF ThE RoAd" in there little lifted hatchbacks called 'SUVs'.

I have a 2008 Prius. It has 340,000 miles on it. It still gets 45mpg+..It has never leaked one drop of oil.
Its not fast. But its efficient and gets me from A to B.
Would love to get a new one soon. Good value car for the money. And I think this Prius will hold its value better than a Model 3...
This looks great compared to the 2 Gen Prius I drove for 9 years, but ultimately for me the #1 thing when buying a car is the total cost of ownership. The Prius has always been great with TCO having a reasonable starting price and amazing efficiency.
did you ever have to replace the battery?
I've never owned a Prius, but looking at the cost of a battery replacement, it's fairly comparable to any major work that needs to be done on a car. Somewhere between $2,000-$4,000 after driving for 100k-150k miles. When taking into account similar priced repairs typical of most non-toyota cars within that mile range and comparing cost of gas vs electric, it's a pretty reasonable purchase for a commuter. Not saying I would buy one, but it isn't bad. For some, an older Nissan leaf might be a more compelling option if you aren't planning on driving more than 100 miles a day for a commute.
@@ChrisParayno these days you can DIY the batteries yourself. As long as the batteries haven't changed much between each generation, this probably has the lowest and easiest repairs for any DIYer in the electric car category
@@DM9_eyo 100k to 150k is too soon for most Priuses on needing a battery. Fewer gen 3's failed than gen 2. Gen 4 has basically no issues with anything, just ugly to most people. I have a gen 3 with 270k and the battery is noticeably old but I drive it economically and still get mid 50s MPG combined in the summer and 50 combined in the winter.
I drove cab in 2010s, the best car in our fleet was a 2013 priis V. My dispatcher once asked me how I managed to pull off a pickup that was impossible by computer metrics. I said "breaking the law." Honestly every new car can break the law easily in speed. But the prius' sport mode (sorry, "power mode") has always been decently quick. Launch speed and torque are all that matters in a society with a top speed of 80mph. A lot of "fast" is up to driver skill.
Right. I love power mode. A tesla did that in front of me once and hooooly-those suckers are quick.
I'm actually impressed and surprised with the overall styling and looks on this one.

@@Blooppenheimer You keep posting that, but don’t be so hard on yourself. I’m sure you have _some_ good points.

@@johnnemesh5459 Gas engines are far from obsolete.
I never thought I've find myself looking at a Prius and thinking "dang, that's good looking!"
I especially like the way the angle of the windshield nearly matches the angle of the hood. It's a design cue you normally see only in exotic or, as Doug said, concept cars.
The high gauge cluster is awesome. I drive a Gen 9 Civic and absolutely love the layout like that.
I drive an 8G civic. Can confirm it’s awesome.

I'm actually really excited for this new Prius. I've been looking for a hybrid because my apartment building doesn't have anywhere to charge an EV overnight, so I'd be stuck charging at stations, and I feel that most under 30k hybrids are either REALLY ugly (old prius) or are just a bit lack luster, so to see this is exciting.
My gf lives in a condo w/o charging and she owns a Tesla (I do too, but live in a house). When she goes grocery shopping she plugs it in at the store and gets 30 or so miles on it. She can go a few weeks before running low. If it gets too low, we'll swap cars and I'll charge hers up at my place. Works well.
@@kenbob1071 that’s a drag tho
1) Take a look at EVmatch. They're the most cost effective commercial EV charger and you may find some in your neighborhood on their map. Owners are usually happy to have you parking overnight to charge and while they can set their own rates, most people set them lower than other commercial chargers.
2) Look for local EV Charger installers to work with as a tenant advocate so you can approach your landlord about EV charging. I used to sell chargers and it was frequently a tenant who would reach out to us about charging. We would come up with a plan and the tenant would help us get a meeting with the landlord to explain how they can make money with an EV charger.
@@kenbob1071 sounds like a good situation you're in, but neither my local grocery store, nor my Uni, have charging, so I'd really be stuck unless I decided to go back to my parents place everytime I needed a full charge 😅
Great review. As a 2013 Prius owner, I want to say thank you for paying homage to the reasons Prius owners love them. And I loved the term "Anti-car Car Enthusiast".
*anti-car enthusiast car
I had the chance to drive one of these during the Thanksgiving long weekend. I was very impressed by the fuel efficiency of this car. Amazing. We drove 4 hours and 40 minutes after starting from full tank, and at the end of the trip the fuel level indicator was showing that the car had used only half a tank. Next day we drove anoter couple of hours, and then finally I had to go to the gas station. To my surprise, the tank was full with less than 30 dollars. So, if you're interested in not visiting the gas station often and getting a lot of miles for your money, this car delivers just that, amazing efficiency. This car works well, looks good and it does not cost a fortune such as full electric cars. I don't care about speed. The car is not fast, but I don't need it to be fast, just efficient. On the not so positive side, I thought the seats were not comfortable and the driver's position feels too low. Maybe I am used to other cars which are higher from the road.
It's not just you. The seating position of the 5th gen is much lower than my 2nd gen.
Thank you, Doug for this excellent review of the Prius.
You know by now that us, Prii owners don't buy them for emotional allégresse, but purely for their fuel efficiency.
I am on my 3rd Prius - a 2016 Prius V and I love it.
The 2023 model is an exciting design and many, including myself, will be upgrading to this model.
I was thinking about the T Model 3 but the 2023 Prius got me reconsidering.
Forget the fugliness, long live the 2023 Prius
Also buying a toyota you don't have to deal with elon car shenanigans, like questionable build quality and gettint stranded in the winter.
No intention to disrespect, but somehow i'm not surprised that the type of person to use words like 'allégresse' in a youtube comment is also the person who has bought 3 Prius's. l just love it LOL
I'd definitely stay away from Teslas. At least if your goal is saving money. Teslas aren't very reliable relative to Toyotas. Also, the sticker price on this is probably about half of the Tesla.
allégresse f (plural allégresses). elation, joy, gladness
Doug didn't mention dead on reliability. I'm on my second Prius and am amazed on how bulletproof this car is. I have a 2010 third gen w/ 160,000 miles and it costs little to own. I live in a rural artea, so charging is an issue, so for now I'll drive Prius.
Effectively, it gets a stunning makeover for it's 25th birthday
The Prius started production in December 1997 for the 1998 model year
This one started December 2022 for the 2023 model year
One thing I loved about the Prius was the shifter, glad they kept the same functionality, definitely looking forward to buying this year of Prius

I'm really starting to realize how good of a value these newer gen toyotas are. I personally always drove 1 of the 3 German cars (audi, merc, bmw) and as most car people know, those cars are riddled with options and add-ons.
I recently swapped cars with my friend for a day because he needed a "ballet-able" car for his work related event (essentially a car someone can sit comfortably in the back seat) so I had a opportunity to go around in a 2022 Corolla Sport while he drove my Audi A8L. Now putting aside the "luxury", since the Corolla wasn't for that, I'm amazed for how much of the stuff was standard and for its price.
Yeah, I think a 7 in the DougScore for value isn't doing this thing justice. It is unbelievable to me that you can get an AWD vehicle with 50+ MPG, decent multimedia/Android Auto, and tons of safety features, for less than $30k that is also very likely to do 150k miles in it's lifetime without much fuss.

i love that gauge cluster, as a big fan of Heads Up DIsplays, this kind of bridges the gap because its not QUITE on your windshield in your permanent line of sight, but its a full cluster so you get much more info than a HUD would give. i like it. I drive a 10 year old Mazda 3 with a flip screen HUD and ill never go back to looking below the wheel again. My next car will need a similar system because i refuse to lose features when i buy my next vehicle which will be 15-20 years NEWER than an old mazda hatchback
That is the first Prius that has made me feel anything but apathy. The design is magnificent, and the panel gaps are so small I honestly thought that it _was_ a coupe.
I just saw one of these the other day and I had no idea what it was until I saw the name on the back. I legit exclaimed “That’s a Prius?!?!” Like it’s a really great looking car. I kinda want one.

I picked up the 2021 after my civic si was totaled. Best decision I ever made I miss the civic it was fun but I had to replace the ac in that thing 3 times. The Prius hardly wears its breaks, and oil. It’s built like a tank and when the ac in my house went out in July it made a pretty good tent
That’s something a lot of people don’t realize. They are incredibly reliable and drive the same on day one as 10 years later. If you want to hold onto a car for a decade and save a lot of money this is the best there is. I’ve had zero issues.
I havent seen this in person, but I have to say... on video the exterior of this looks really nice. Kudos to the designers at Toyota for this one. If I was in the market for a similar car for around-city driving, I'd definitely consider this.
That is the first Prius that actually has a really cool design. I have to admit though that I always liked the Prius styling for how odd it was (except Gen 1, that one is truely boring). The only thing I kinda don't like is the black spike on the rear next to the taillights, but that is just me.
Also, I love the fact that the second gen can be driven in FM4 which made it even better. I had a 700 HP FWD Prius in that game xD
#HiddenCompartment is very smart and got a laugh out of me xD
The design definitely makes me think they’re taking shots at the Tesla Model 3.
The hidden compartment is where you hide your man card when the society comes to revoke it.
18:11 The constant obsession with being "FAST" vs. fast enough (Will it make a driver immortal? Do you run from the cops? Will it prevent traffic jams?) is worth a whole episode. Speed is mostly used for showboating, tailgating and impatient wasting of energy.

The heating coils directly underneath the wipers are a GENIUS move.
It's not a new feature but new to a prius I guess. a lot of subarus and volvos have them standard. still not something that is as common as it should be. THIS IS THE WAY. All car designers and auto corporations should be taking notes.
A car that looks good, drives well, and doesn't break the bank- in this day and age...WOW.
I don't need a super fancy engine as a daily driver- something that's beautifully designed, functional/reliable, and affordable- thats the winning combo! That's what the masses want!
It really doesn't cost them too much more in terms of hard upgrades, just a better design team that thinks about the aesthetics of the body work, and people will be lining up to buy it.
Honestly as a non-car expert, if someone switched the 'PRIUS' name badge to 'TESLA' on the back I would absolutely believe it.
Tastefully designed...and you won't have to go into debt for years to own one! This is the direction I want future cars to go in.
I never thought of even looking at a Prius till I seen one of these driving down the road. I was shocked to see it was a Prius. It's a really sharp looking ride.
Saw a couple in person at Tokyo Auto Salon. It's weird to say...but the Prius actually looks good! Do I want one? No, but it does look good. And while it might be a small detail, I love the folding trunk privacy cover; it's a simple but smart feature. I've been caught needing to take my Mazda3 cover out but then struggling to fit it somewhere, so I can see how handy it'd be
At first I thought this #hiddencompartment is labelled so people won't mix it up with #wirelesscharger... But then I realized more obvious mistake would be putting your phone on the lid of this storage and expect charging... They should put #notacharger there 😎
I'm a gearhead and I really liked my 2nd gen, it was such a well made car. It was taken out by a minivan, the Prius was mangled, but it did its job and the occupants came out of the crash ok.
I bought the car just to flip it because I got a great deal on it, but quickly came to recognize what a good car it was. I had my GF drive it for a few days while I serviced her beloved Jeep Liberty and she decided to keep the Prius. Initially she chose it just because the economy made sense, but then she came to love it.
I like the little ramp starting at the top of the horn button and leading right up to the speedometer . You never have to search for the speed , it would just naturally lead your eyes right up to it. No searching for speed info or other info directly in front of you .
Yeah, it might take current Prius owners a while to get used to finding the speed directly in front of them. You know, like on every other car.
The previous generation looked like a styled-by-committee project, being different from every angle, and had plenty of sharp competing angles to choose from. The new one may have some derivative styling cues, but it does look cohesive, and attractive. The major advantages this has over an EV is pricing, and the Prius will work when its cold. My buddy's Model 3 couldn't/wouldn't charge for 5 days during a recent cold snap... I've never considered buying a Prius before, but this one is on the list.
I have owned a model 3 since 2019. Have not had any issues with driving or charging in cold weather. Others in colder climates have not had issues.

God I want one. I cannot believe I’d ever want a Prius.
It looks so cool, suitable for those who work or have a family using the car every day, or traveling to faraway places because the selling point of this car are about fuel economy, 4 doors with a spacious trunk, and a futuristic design
Thanks for such a good review. I personally would prefer to have the better performance of an EV, but I can see how this would be a super efficient option to have and allows you to skip all the EV logistics and range anxiety that many people get.
Don't ever buy or Avoid EV if you care about environment and conveniences.
The 2023 Prius prime will do 0-60 in 6.6 seconds. That’s not bad
My lifestyle doesn't support an EV. I have nowhere to plug in at home or work. I like my gas cars where I can fuel up 0-100% in 3 minutes in just about any human settlement. I have a 3rd gen Prius sitting out in front of my house and it's a fantastic road trip car.
@@fitnesswithsteve but it ain't good! Just say'n.
Plus they take forever to "fill up" to full. Not something to worry about with a gas-powered car. EVs need to get a grip on the recharge (from nearly 0) time. Way too finicky right now, and that's a consequence of the larger picture regarding battery technology. The progress there simply isn't keep up at all with other technological advances, and that's very prominent in a technology where the battery is the core feature of the product. There is no car without the battery. 🤣
If the prices aren't ruined by huge dealer markups this could be the bestselling car for the next few years. Somewhat affordable pricing, good looks, great gas mileage and (hopefully) the famous Toyota reliability.
This might be the only logical new car purchase I would even look at if the battery is dependable
I believe Hybrid Reborn was below the wipercoils on the front of the car as well. This thing actually looks good, especially for a Prius.
“Driving slow in the passing lane is a hallmark of the Prius.” Truer words have never been spoken. Especially here in SoCal.
Yes Doug, exactly… you’re spot on, it is the first production model that does has that concept car look.
Maybe it's not a popular opinion, but I've thought the Prius has looked very cool for awhile now, like at least since 2017. I loved the extreme brake light design in 2017. And last year's nightshade edition was sick. But I agree that this is probably the best one yet.
To me, Prius is about reliability, fuel economy and comfort. I do not care about looks or power when commuting from A to B. Shame the sales are/were down, but the look was never an issue (more like price).
you're right, not a popular opinion lol it looked like crap before
You can remove “maybe”
I have a 2021 Prius Prime and I think it has a sporty aggressive look.
@@jozefkovac6858 I think there was something about the design and cheapness to interior, of the gen 4 model. And no one liked the tail light and grille thing or whatever. Sales were down because maybe that, and also, then why not just get a camry or others that now have about the same hybrid tech in it anyway. I dont even know why they still have that many models.
I bought this Prius in blue a month ago, which is my third Prius: it’s amazing.
I've always told people that if they can get over the dorky looks and the meager acceleration, then Prius is the correct answer to the question "Car?". Removing both of those limitations in one update is a game changer; combine that with the efficiency and pricing, and this car is good news for everyone.
Also the answer may be: Aptera, Leaf, Tesla (pickup or Y).
@@annoyingspore Aptera lacks availability and practicality, leaf lacks range, Tesla lacks affordability even after the big price cut (for an average american).
Thank you for your review. It's a beautiful car. Hopefully a plug in version will arrive soon, which seems like the sweet spot -- electric only for driving around town plus the long range available with the ICE assist.
I'm a big fan of the Prime architechture. I'm waiting for a RAV4 Prime. I need the room for all of my french bull dogs.
This. Why plug-in Hybrids with decent pure electric range, say 75+ miles, don’t exist is beyond me. Drives around town on pure electric, switches to gas after the battery is depleted , and recharges the battery itself while running in gas (Volvo T8 power train). Do longer commute by navigating home to highway on electric, gas for the next hundred miles, and arrive in the next city with a recharged battery. Duel fuel, no range anxiety, and still “green” for a much of its use. It’s the best of both worlds.
@@iadcrjca My friend Charles has a Rav4 prime and he loves it. And my friend Jenny has a Prius Prime and loves it.
Lol beautiful? No
Making the Prius a PHEV means a bigger battery, more weight, and more cost. Not sure if the Prius chassis can accommodate a larger battery but it would be nice to run longer on battery power alone. Perhaps one day the Prius will migrate towards being eFuel compatible and therefore even greener than present. I don't think all car manufacturers believe going 100% EV is the best way forward in the near future, Toyota and Porsche seem to be some of those manufacturers.
I’d buy one but the road noise is just not great. It drowns out the music and I have to raise my voice to talk passengers when on the freeway.
I don’t care about driver assist gimmicks. I want a premium stereo and a quiet cabin and efficiency.
Sounds like you want a Lexus ES, no?
Can't believe how excited I am for a Prius! Hybrids & PHEVs make much more sense than pure EVs and this one looks great!
See Peter Zeihan's latest comments on EVs, you are correct.
Wow! When I saw you attending by this the other day while discussing another new vehicle I was impressed but had no idea what it was. This thing is beautiful! I had a gen 1 period from 2005 to 2015. I really liked it. But it was small. And I had to replace the hybrid battery once... Not something I want to do again.
I drove a 2020 Prius Prime and was pleasantly surprised. Thought it would be small inside, I'm a big guy and had plenty of leg and headroom. Of course its terribly slow, but they run forever and get off the charts mileage, that's a pretty good trade I suppose.
@@bh2236 for sure
this prius is growing on me. The last one was a disaster, but this might work. It looks a bit like a block of cheese though. I'd love to see a bright yellow one lol.
Beautiful and sporty hybrid that I would buy.
I love it! The sunroof set up is exactly the same as my 2015 Scion tC. This new Prius is very exciting in my opinion. It may be my next car :)
The gauge cluster information is presented lika that in the 1st generation Nissan Leaf as well. Really nice, no need to look far away from the road to see your speed. (Which is always 10% below speed limit 😅 )
the fact that i want one is impressive, i live in North Dakota, where a prius would suffer during winter, but i want one soo bad.
Wow you're right Doug, Prius has always been like, hoo nice hybrid car, but this one just stands out it looks like a really nice car!!! amazing
That drag coefficient tho 🤤
Kudos to Toyota! The quintessence of stylishness this new Prius is. Especially the tail. Due to the high price in relation to the average russian salary they are not very popular in Russia and has never been sold officially here, but maybe one day I will be able to become at least a second owner of one of them.
Nice review. What you missed, though, is that the Prius has a history of being very reliable. They also last for a long time. In addition to fuel economy, those are additional reasons why Lyft and Uber drivers favor the Prius. Many owners have 200,000 miles and more on their Prius. As far as performance is concerned, in many areas the traffic density limits how fast you can drive a vehicle anyway. I did have to chuckle about your performance parameters, and how times have changed. For example, what is considered average power and acceleration today would have been considered very good performance in the 1980's.
Well they’re Toyotas they’re all bullet proof
There is a prius near me for sale with 415,000 miles with original battery and motor.
@@nolanhines8460 Wow! What year and how much are they asking for it? I'd be curious to know.
Ah yes, the Toyota Prius, the ultimate enthusiast car
I don’t feel it anymore attractive than the previous generations. I have found all the previous ones good looking because of the engineering.
Always a pleasure watching Doug! Keep it up!

I had a 2004 Eclipse GT that also did 0-60 in 7 seconds and that always felt fast enough to me. The fact it is an eCVT is what will make it feel slower for sure. I LOVED the 2019 Prius XLE I had but it’s 10 plus second 0-60 felt exhausting at times. I think where it is at now with power is perfect for everyday use and when you need to get up to highway speeds quick. The one and only complain I had as an owner was the power and now I see 0 reason to not get one other than being broke as fuck lmao
Great design. I love my 2007 Prius. It’s incredibly reliable, robust, roomy and the design-aspect doesn’t affect me for I always consider the cars I own as beautiful. But my next car - if my Prius should ever die - will be electric. I prefer the electric driving experience which to me is the logical next step from driving the Prius. Calm cruses, very comfortable also on long trips… The only reason why they didn’t make it fully electric seems to be the price point, which would be significantly higher than this hybrid version.
Btw. my current mileage is 225.250km with zero breakdowns and very little repairs…
I suggest that you put some good study into EVs before buying one. We've been lied to about them and to mention only one down shot is that they cause more pollution overall than does a gas car.
They didn't make it all electric because there is no convenient chargers out on the road. The infrastructure is not there. urban use with home solar or business location charger helps for urban use,.
This is one of the best hybrid cars that you can get, I would get this over a Tesla.
In re "why would I get a hybrid," it may be worth keeping in mind that traditional hybrids like this one retain one _massive_ advantage over EVs: they don't take half an hour (or more... occasionally a _lot_ more) to refuel.
Owning a hybrid I can say they are boring as hell and offer all of the disadvantages of an EV and an ICE without any of the positives, fueling time withstanding. Stay away from any Hybrid/EV without some form of warranty on battery, my first gen volt is crippled right now because of the measly 16kWh which is going to cost $10k+ to replace, that's more than the cars BB value.
@@Asterngeisha I liked the one I used to have, but apparently not a lot of other people did, since they don't make them any more.
@@Asterngeisha One obvious advantage of a hybrid over an ICE is that the hybrid gets almost double the gas mileage.
@@Martin-vc6by Not true from my own little bubble of perspective. My Gen1 Voltec gets about 38mpg wheras the same displacement turbocharged Multiair in my prior fiat got 29mpg. While it is more efficient the majority of that efficiency is in the fact that the Voltek has nearly half the HP my Fiat did and therefore is not a vehicle that can be driven in any form of spirit.
@Asterngeisha My current 2013 still ranges from9-10.8kWh usable battery. It's out of warranty and pretty much beat up exterior wise but I can still go 30-50 EV Miles with lifetime 142MPG. Sport and L FTW😅
The car looks great! Hope they come out with a full EV version seems the perfect car for it
I honestly think they will retire the nameplate if Toyota changes to EV.. Prius is a part of Toyota's history on building a revolutionary hybrid car. So when they go all EV, Prius will retire cause it has served the purpose of it's job as a hybrid car
I just don’t see that happening anytime soon. No way a EV Prius would do 50+ mpg.
No, maybe you can bury this ev full thing to other companies. There are boring for most of people. Japanese know how to make cars and preserve the car culture.
@@mrfishsticks266 even a 2023 prius is still boring to drive compared to virtually any EV. EV's singe speed transmission is the closest to a manual in terms of direct mechanical connection beetween throttle and the torque. no automatic or cvt transmission with its own mind, to shift for you at the worst time.
Full ev bad 🗿
this is what i was hoping for in the last 2 revisions. its about time i like how it looks
That's a pretty car. Never been a fan of their looks before, but this is quite nice.
Stunning on the exterior missed the mark on the interior.
Hey Doug, loved the review as always but I would appreciate more thorough all-around exterior shots! I feel like I know the cars really well from your videos but barely know what they look like on the outside besides some cropped shots. I find myself image searching after the videos to get a better idea beyond the side profile.
Car looks sick when customized. 💯🔥
It does look nice. I'm glad to see that Toyota didn't allow the designer of the giant front grills touch this. Maybe it will be the trend now from Toyota.
Yeah, I think those are really ugly
The car is plenty fast. It is not a race car. Drove it twice. Drives great. Fun to drive. Low wind and tire noise on LE. Not sure where this guy is coming from...
I love the double take at that Lexus passing at 19:52
Gorgeous? Doug needs an eye exam
If I bought new cars, I'd be all over this. (Most I've ever paid is $6300.) It looks super cool with that semi-80's wedge shape and the futuristic headlights are awesome. I also really like the angled bodywork along the side! Paint it a REAL color and it'd look rather sporty for an eco sedan.
This is what hybrids should be. I have a 2004 Z4 2.5 and it has a 0-60 of 7 seconds... So this Prius is just as quick off the line! 🤣 Vehicles have come a long way! Maybe in 5-10 years I'll get one when it fits my budget.😝
Fun fact; the new Prius has a near sports-coupe interior layout, and the main reason you don't see that from the outside is because the front windshield is extended all the way on top of the front wheels to flow seamlessly into the hood at an equal angle. But if you redesigned the front windscreen to be like a set-back coupe and same with the rear (both of which there is plenty of interior room to do), you could get proportions that are quite similar to the Supra bodystyle.
Essentially, if they beefed up this platform a bit and gave it a new greenhouse, this could be a hybrid Supra / Celica style car. I hope they'll do this in the future.
Also one of the main reasons the Prius can't rely on the "it just needs good fuel economy to sell" philosophy, is that there are hardly any new cars being released that aren't some form of hybrid or electric, so the novelty of the Prius being "the Hybrid" is at a dead end. If they don't start competing on genuine terms that aren't drivetrain based, they'll simply be outcompeted. The horde of upcoming Chinese brands that all go hybrid or full electric with their entire lineups also help shake up the foundation of how hybrid cars like the Prius can truly compete in the next 5 years. Good looks is always a great place to start.
It kinda of looks like they are headed that way, at least an ‘R’ version of sorts seems likely in the future
@@kleanish An "R" version with 4wd and a genuine sport focus could be catching a bit of that Celica soul. Could even throw a couple rally tires and suspension on it and see how it'll perform on gravel/snow
