This is a poem by Taras Hryhorovych. Probably the most famous, it is memorized by everyone in junior high school.
I don't know why the author of the song changed the sentence in the original "To the abode of God, And then I'll pray ... But till that day I know nothing of God" to "To the abode of God, And then I'll pray... and until that day I don't know anyone."
I don't understand why... It always seemed to me that these words emphasize that the poet is talking about himself - I am not ready to go to another world until I am convinced that my Ukraine is finally free and safe.
MY TESTAMENT
When I am dead, bury me
In my beloved Ukraine,
My tomb upon a grave mound high
Amid the spreading plain,
So that the fields, the boundless steppes,
The Dnipro's plunging shore
My eyes could see, my ears could hear
The mighty river roar.
When from Ukraine the Dnipro bears
Into the deep blue sea
The blood of foes ... then will I leave
These hills and fertile fields --
I'll leave them all and fly away
To the abode of God,
And then I'll pray ....
But till that dayI nothing know of God.
bury me, then rise ye up
And break your heavy chains
And water with the tyrants' blood

This is very important poem for us. My Testament (or "My will" maybe) by Taras Shevchenko (19th century), probably the most iconic ukrainian poet and important figure for our culture. He's considered "father" of ukrainian modern literature. Was also talented painter. He was born into serfdom (slavery) in controlled by imperial russia Ukraine. Lived trough a lot of terrible things. Was freed from serfdom because of his painting talent.
Later was imprisoned for his writing, in which he mocked russian imperialism and promoted independence of Ukraine, fight for freedom. Served sentence in very harsh conditions which greatly ruined his health. Also they outlawed him writing, but he still did in secret.
He is a symbol to ukrainians, our "father" who said "Fight and you shall prevail"

In my opinion this poem^ better translated like this:
"My Testament"

So, Taras Shevchenko was famous writer in Ukraine, he was write about salvors in Ukraine, it was a little different then in the rest of the world. So Polish people and Russian (rich ) own Ukranians. And Tara’s was writing about our freedom and how we have to brake down our salvors and finally get free . So we did, but Russia wants to return everything back .

The song is not old, it was written about 10 years ago. The reason you feel its old is because the author of the music used old Kossack songs motifs in it.
The words of the poem itself is around 300 years old.

Це про одне з чергових повстань українців за свою.свободу в 18 столітті.
Взагалі Шевченко в першу чергу художник і в меншу.- поет.
Він був кріпаком (фактично рабом). Його викупили з рабства його друзі.
Він за свою просвітницьку діяльність отримав 10 років заслання в Казахстані в службі в армії ...
Нагадую, що Російська Імперія забороняла використання для і друк творів українською мовою...
Його тексти - це реальна історія нашого народу, біль за долю простого люду...
Похований у Каневі, на горі повз яку тече річка Дніпро.

На картині зображене селянське повстання. У ті часи коли жив і творив Шевченко Україна входила у склад російської імперії в Україні було кріпосне право, велика кількість селян була закріпачена по суті була рабами своїх господарів. Шевченко сам був сином кріпака, його викупили з рабства і дуже багато його віршів і картин пов'язані з цією метою. Він виступав проти кріпацтва, був засуджений і висланий.
Селянські повстання дуже розповсюджені в ті часи. І саме цей вірш надихав людей на боротьбу за свободу і рівність.

this fall, when the Northeast was de-occupied, in one city a russian propaganda poster was torn down, and under it was a poster with an excerpt of a poem by T. Shevchenko:

Only when the enemy blood starts flowing down the river into the sea, will I leave from here, leave the steppes and the mountains - everything, and will join God. Until then - I know no God.
Once you bury me, rise up! Break the chains! Spray the freedom with the evil enemy blood. And in the renewed great family, the free family, remember me with a kind, quiet word.
