I have worked as a telecom engineer in the Mt Cook area of NZ. Lots of severe electrical storms that last for days I project managed a new exchange & outside plant installation which was brought into service, with the most up to date lightning protect in November and totally destroyed by an electrical storm in the following April at a cost of $1M+. A direct hit will cause serious damage no matter the type of protection you use. Based on hard and very expensive experience, DISCONNECT ALL ANTENNAS DURING AN ELECTRICAL STORM.

Love your daily talks. Do you know that OG has a meaning to young folks? It once stood for "original gangster" but has evolved to mean "original". Dave, believe it or not, you are the OG HamTuber!

Never forget, when I put up a Diamond discone vhf / uhf scanner antenna on a 35 foot telescoping pole. When I connected the BNC male connector on the coax inside, there was a spark between the center and ground. And then, another, and another! I thought I had crossed an electric wire in the attic. Nope. Static. It was a cool, dry day with dark clouds approaching and a little windy. The connector kept firing like a car spark plug, in slow motion. I built a 100K resistor, across from hot to ground into an outdoor project box. Problem solved. But a fascinating experience, nonetheless!

Had a lightning storm move through yesterday and after experiencing 3 radios, 2 antennas, a recording studio, 3 PC's and a LCD TV blow out from a previous strike... I disconnected and moved my radios to the center of the house far away from everything. lol.

Can an antenna be grounded on a fire escape ???
    (It's a Helium Miner antenna).
    Thanks for the awesome videos.

Dave thank you for all the great show!! I'm just now starting to setup a SDR to listen to the short wave and hams. I'm wanted to listen for awhile before seeing if I want to go all in and buying much more expensive equipment and going for my license. I got a little Tram 1411 and put it up about 15 to 18 ft off the ground but did use the 400 coax to come to the house. Anyway I ground the antenna then went to screw the coax to my RTL-SDR and I could feel current small shock in my hand. I went back outside and unhook the ground wire and it's fine. Question is what or why would it shock me with ground but not if I don't have the antenna grounded? Like maybe the small amount of current from the USB i was feeling. If anyone knows please let me know and I'll thank you now, thank you and God bless.

That "light" you explained in the older radios sounds interesting. I wonder if there is a way of connecting it to a more modern radio so you can see if charge is building up and maybe give people an idea of static charge. Also it can show people who are new to the hobby what it is and give them an idea on how to protect their radios,
Where I live in Scotland we have rain static. It is when the rain affects the antenna and causes noise on repeaters. It can make the signal of others harder to hear but it dissipates slowly though so it can take a few hours to bleed off.

I think Dave is referring to neon bulbs like NE-55 that ionize at about 50 volts and discharge the line. Chokes like Z-50 have been used too.

Ever since I was burned by a bare-wire antenna, I've thought that static is another reason to use a balun on wire dipoles.

It was actually an incandescent lamp. It has low resistance when not glowing and the resistance

Something you said made me wonder.
What materials are used in your weather station (ie metal or plastic) and does the the wind speed gauge cause you any problems ? I would think some wind speeds might affect some frequencies.
I know that some large RFI Enclosures add "stirrers" to mix up the signals inside them.
    Thanks and 73

I have inverted vee insulated wire antennas. I am grounded through pass panel but am told I do not have static protection, just lightening. I even have arrestors in line. What more can I do?

So on an ungrounded vertical antenna do ground radials dissipate static if the radiating element is connected to the radials?

  • @vinniec5286
    @vinniec5286 3 года назад

I don't understand why you would want to short the non-used antennas to ground. If there is no path to ground, I would think the lightning would strike the one in use, which is protected by your lightning arresters and grounding/earthing components. After all, electricity takes the path of least resistance. I learned from an old Elmer to disconnect my antenna coax from the radio and put it in a glass jar. No path to ground and glass has been used as an insulator on electric lines for over a century. If I am wrong, then I have been very lucky.
