Getting hit during the vengeance animation cancels the rest of the animation. You *can* hide the animation by animation cancelling with a few specific weapons (like AGS spec + vengeance in the same tick) but that's not what was happening here.
It being invisible didn't matter since it already rebounded the damage before it would have been visible anyway.
