I know this one has potentially run its course but I had to get to it at some point none the less. For those who don't know, the title of the song is a reference to supply ships owned by the Weller brothers, who were some of the earliest European settlers of the Otago region of New Zealand. This song likely originates from the mid 19th century and might have been sung while processing a whale carcass on land.
Lyrics:
There once was a ship that put to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down
Oh blow, my bully boys, blow (huh)
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We’ll take our leave and go
She’d not been two weeks from shore
When down on her a right whale bore
The captain called all hands and swore
He’d take that whale in tow (huh)
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We’ll take our leave and go
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale’s tail came up and caught her
All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her
When she dived down low (huh)
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We’ll take our leave and go
No line was cut, no whale was freed
The captain’s mind was not of greed
And he belonged to the Whaleman’s creed
She took that ship in tow (huh)
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We’ll take our leave and go
For forty days or even more
The line went slack then tight once more
All boats were lost, there were only four
But still that whale did go (huh)
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We’ll take our leave and go
As far as I’ve heard, the fight’s still on
The line’s not cut, and the whale’s not gone
The Wellerman makes his regular call
To encourage the captain, crew and all (huh)
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We’ll take our leave and go
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We’ll take our leave and go
I'm loving this version. Wellerman's been kinda overplayed, but you find a good way to perform it. The guitar and the slightly quicker tempo (I checked the BPM, 105 compared to Nathan Evans' 95?) and the way you emphasise the words make it way more punchy than many versions I've seen. nice work!
Agree about it being overplayed. Any opinion on Alina Gingertail’s version? That’s another along with Seth’s that I don’t tire of.
It’s always a good day when Seth Watkins posts a new music video❤🎉
love me a good shantie. wellerman may be a tad over done but dam is it a good song
Finally the cover we've all been waiting for! So awesome Seth! 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Thank you!
Raglan Road next plz
Fantastic my favorite Sea Shanty EVER! Btw I have 2 requests for you 1. A pound a Week Rise (it’s a Union song). 2 . When Johnny Comes Marching Home. (It’s a song regarding the Civil War) Anyway awesome as always.👍
Seconding the pound a week rise, I think he would do an amazing version of it :)
We talking suggestions here? Mine are "Jarama" and "All you fascists bound to lose" by Woodie Guthrie.
can you please do rye wisky by the piriting charls
Grand work as always!
Got a great voice for folk music and shanties, too.
Fits perfectly.
Thank you. You took a recently played out shanty and made it fresh and new again. Bravo.
Your voice would be perfect for a cover of the Greatest Adventure by Clamavi De Profundis. Please give it a listen? Clamavi De Profundis sang the soundtrack to the 1977 animated Hobbit movie and your voice really brings forth those memories. I truly believe a couple of his songs would be a good fit for you.
We need seth
Jonathan Young and colm mcguiness to all to a cover together
Yes!
Absolutely!!!!
100%
Definitely digging the nautical theme the latest songs have
This song was my gateway into folk music and shanty's. That passion led me to fall in love with your channel, and now everything has come full circle. Thank you
This is exactly my experience!!! Welcome to the Seth club buddy!!!
Glad to have you both here!
Am I only person who was focused on the water?
da, kamerad
Yes! Thank you for covering this! This is my favorite sea shanty!
I’d like to request “a pound a week rise” for a song in the future
The wellermen was the song that started my love for this kind of music, from there I heard a couple other sea shanties, eventually found your channel, you were singing “I wanna be in the cavalry” it was a breathtaking performance and the first song like that I had heard. I still get goosebumps when I play it.
For years, I would immediately play any song you posted and every song was a masterpiece.
I heard “the idiot” both versions of “I wanna be in the cavalry” your songs of the IRA and got good at singing base by singing along low.
When you posted this song I knew that it was going to be absolutely beautiful and you did not disappoint!
Your record of making the best version of any song you sing remains not only unbroken, but well polished.
Hearing this song from you has brought my love for historical songs full circle and I thank you for the many nights of fun me and my buddies had singing along to your songs
(we don’t sound half bad, I do base deep and well, my two buddies carry the chorus together, and my cousin can do the high notes really well)
Excellent! I’ll look into the song
you should really do the Workers Song! Longest Johns did a version but I believe youd surpass theirs ten times and more
For sure!
Great version.
And evidently Billy Joel is not the only one that can harmonize with himself.
Can you do Drunken sailor next?
Seth is one of the contributors to Malinda's excellent version: ruclips.net/video/nMOyOlmBYCU/видео.html
It started. I had a new favorite version of the song.
First!
What a clear voice!❤
Salutes from Brazil, buddy! Another great cover!
Yes!!! We had to have this from you!! Outstanding !

you should do some stuff from ash and oakum
new to me, and a great addition. your songs have a way of staying in my head for days, and this is probably going to be another, hey!
Love this Seth, love all your music especially Grace.❤
We’re whalers on the moon. We carry a harpoon. But there ain’t no whales so we tell tall tales and sing a whaling tune.
What a bar mate!
I lvoe this and i love how you give the 3 of you different personalities with styling!!
Gonna keep it up with my first streak!
Excellent!
Great video, would love to see you do a cover of spancill hill by luke kelly or ordinary man by Christy Moore
Both are awesome 👌

Damn. Amazing voice.

Yes!!❤❤ Seth, I just want to tell you this, in case you don't see it. You've saved my life. Your music helped me cope when I was so low i wished I was gone. Thank you for your amazing voice.❤❤
Please know that there are resources available to you if you are still feeling this way-I work in healthcare services and would be happy to connect you (or anyone else) with these resources should you feel they would be beneficial.
It’s a scary feeling and I understand how hard it is; know that you have worth and that you CAN get through this. Best of luck…
@@menyou1443 I am in therapy now🤗 Even if the feeling hasn't completely faded yet, I'm slowly moving up🙂
@@hugemusiclover1837 I did feel that way for a long, long time… I’m proud of you for making it. Know that you have some credit to take for your survival too, and you are so important 💜💜💜 I had to use this too as near my only source of comfort and support, so I know how hard that is too… but I’m willing to be here for you as well… so far as I’m concerned, no one should ever have to go at it alone like I did.
You are most welcome and I am so happy to hear you are feeling a bit better, this will always be a safe and welcome space for you!
@HugeMusicLover, from one survivor to another, I hope you feel no shame about feeling that way… it’s alright. It hurts a lot, but it’s alright to feel sad and need some help. I hope you have all the love and support in your world from true (read: quality) family and friends… as I wish someone had said to me, I’m glad you failed [to be gone]… I’m proud of you for carrying on; and know that has more to do with you, your strength, and your courage than anything else. People take away support, sometimes, but no one can take away your strength or worth. I’m glad you found a way to recharge it and that you reached out to counseling for help. Thank you for being here (and being you). Love and hugs from an internet friend💜💜💜
