I used a key-based method to learn my inversions. The idea being, in any given key, I'm likely to move between the 1, 4, and 5 chords, so get really good at doing that. For example, in the key of C, I'd play a C root, then make the smallest possible jump to play the 4th (F, 2nd inv) and 5th (G, 1st inv). Then, once I'm on that new chord, I keep making the smallest possible jump to the neighbouring chords, etc, going up and down multiple octaves using the smallest jumps between the 1,4 and 5. This got me really comfortable using the most common chord movements in the key, and then I moved to other keys and repeated the process. This was often easy, because going from Key of C to the Key of G, for example, has two chords that I already knew (C and G) and only one new one (D), so it never felt overwhelming.
It probably takes longer than the approach you outlined here, but thought I'd share it. It also adds an ear-training element, because I got to hear 1-4-5 changes in all the different keys, which was quite cool.
