  • Jardin Botanico in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife is the second oldest botanical garden in Spain after that of Madrid. Spread out over a compact five acres, the Botanical Garden was created in 1788 on the orders of King Carlos III.
In keeping with the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment of the time, he wanted to establish a space for plants from the corners of the earth, brought back from exploratory expeditions. His intention was to slowly get the exotic species used to the climate before bringing them to different royal gardens in Spain. Alas, while the plants from the Americas and Asia thrived in Tenerife, they did not fare so well on mainland Spain.
Today, the Jardin Botanico has more than 4,000 plant species, with an impressive collection of banyan or fig trees, which are spectacular. The aerial prop roots of this species inspired the nickname "strangler fig" for its aggressive growth habit cultivated in the densest darkest jungles. That reputation aside, the Jardin Botanico is a peaceful place to admire a wide variety of tropical and sub tropical plants. Enjoy this glimpse of Jardin Botanico!
