I love both your videos Keith and Stan. I feel being a highly skilled/professional arborist/tree surgeon is something you have to immerse yourself in for years to say you’re an expert. I’m 7 years into my profession and will always be learning. All the best to you both, Alex
Thank you so much for this video bc I'm trying to my own tree cutting business on the road but have many trees to climb but do not know how or where to start this gave me some insight on where I need to start.
I used to know a guy that worked in a large tree company out in PA and would climb tress with just arms and legs, no ropes. He had been doing it for a long time. We always called him crazy but the guy was really good at what he did.....I definitely couldn't do it lol
It takes longer but it’s the right way to do it. The knots are more reliable but slower, arguably safer. For me I need more efficiency so I’ve advanced but the basic principle was learned with just ropes and knots.
When I first learned to climb, Iearned without the spurs. It's critical to become comfortable with your gear and friction hitch before straping those spurs on. I'm not too far from the twin cities, when my broken leg heals up I'll come up and show y'all how it's done lol
Hi Stan, always wanted to climb but worked in factorys to long and got to old and just got my second knee replacement and I'm done with that bucket list wish.
I tell all the groundies before they bring a saw into a tree to learn your knots and notches on the ground and go rec climbing with a buddy so they can get comfortable in the tree before they start to cutting
I feel a lot smarter about tree climbing now. If I can’t reach it from the ground or cut it and make it fall to the ground then I’ll hire someone to climb it lol. God bless
The professional arborist should take a lesson on how to coil a rope from a mountain climber. His method continuously twists the rope in the same direction and makes it twist and knot up.
We do rope rescue in the fire department im a part of and we keep our rope in a bag that we just stuff it in. We have found that trying to coil it just made the tangle worse. But like always great video Stan
That’s a bag dedicated to just a single rope though. He put all his gear into the bag with the rope. Rope bags are expensive and when you have minimum 3 ropes to haul around, you better learn to coil. His coil wasn’t clean at all but I’m sure he was rushing and probably does better when he’s not on camera.
Always 2 attachments!!! I fell 40 ft because I was young and dumb and thought I can manage. Took 3 years to walk again and it’s already catching up to me at 40ish. Don’t think safety, do it
Try taking a bucket truck up 60 feet and then hoping on a 100 ft pole to climb the rest of the way to tie in a power line lol. No way I would have done it without a buck squeeze.
do you repair deck/roofing. it's not just the roof but it's the second level outdoor deck, do you fix that? located in Quesnel. it's a huge outdoor deck, let me know.
The cougar is actually very comfortable. Ive been climbing in one for over a year now. Its just a little heavier than some of the higher end saddles but has the same features. I even switched my bridge out for an adjustable rope bridge and rigging paws so I have lower d rings for a secondary attatchment
Your lifeline should be set with a slingshot and weighted throw line. What good is a lifeline if your already at the top? If your spikes are not set into the tree enough you risk a fast trip to the ground. I use a boom lifts these days just for the safety factor.
European arborist here. You are right that it is often perfered to preset a life line. But it is not always possible. I have been tought when climbing on spurs to have one steel braided flipline and one life line on a adjustable cambiumsaver as a secondary anchor point. if things go wrong i can always go down to the grond by removing my flipline and "rappelling (i use petzl zig zag)" down on my climbing line.
The flip line will save you from falling to the bottom. You can't set a life line in every tree from the ground. I gaffed out a week ago with just my flip line around the tree slid about two feet down then stopped. Always use two tie in points while cutting.
Of all the equipment and jobs you have shown I and my team will NOT be partaking for me this is way out of my ability zone and that of my team.We will continue to use a fantastic team who does this daily here in London,I also know why they are so expensive and worth it.
