This reserve is absolutely beautiful, it's key to protect landscapers such as this and I respect anyone that makes that their sole mission as a profession.
Nicely done! The little beetles are soft-winged flower beetles (family Melyridae), in the subfamily Dasytinae. They do eat pollen but are also very important pollinators of many plants in southern California.
Just a tiny footnote: NATIVE AMERICANS still are, always have and will be the original American. NATIVE AMERICANs are taught to walk upon the Mother w/ respect.
nice to know about them i have some here in south brazil, and i always imagined what their native place looks like, because they row super fast and in poor soil and bloom a lot when there are rains
Informative and well filmed! Subscribed. 👍👍 I've got some seedlings that just poppied(🤭) up for me! I'll have a little chunk of California here in southern Ohio.
Most likely Stork's-bill or Filaree. Erodium cicutarium? unfortunately listed as aggresive invasive species on ipc. very cute little flowers and supposedly edible. described as parsley like. very annoying though when it sprouts all over your native ca garden. seeds although cool looking are also tricky to remove from long haired pets. :(
Hello there! My Thai silk California Poppies are blooming weirdly. The callexs look all bumpy and swollen and the flowers are coming out all crinkled. Just as if they where little balls of tissue paper. Folliage looks just fine... Im desperately looking for help and figured that maybe, thanks to your expertise, you might know whats going on or can give me some advice on how to fix them. Thank you!
I'm not a lot of help with ornamentals, just the wild ones! I haven't seen that happen to poppies in the park, ever. I do have iris at home, and the late freeze we had this year made my iris flowers give up before they opened. My figs also ripened on the outside but they were still green and hard on the inside, and fell off the tree. If your poppies are outside and you are in the area, they might have been affected too. The wild poppies didn't seem to have a problem though.
I KNOW there's a reason you posted this DESPITE the area being entirely closed off to visitors but I just can't figure out what it is. Get a clue kids, huh?
I, for one, am grateful for this post during Covid - it allows me to offer virtual field trips to my students that are learning about the symbols of California.

I love the term "superbloom", thanks for the info Jean!
Thanks for the video. Why do some of the buds don't open and fell? is it because of the fungus or heat or what?
I’ve got them in my garden now and they are flowering and it’s Summer here in Australia.
Aren’t they a Summer flowering annual ??

Hi! What's the name of the little purple flowers between the poppies? They're really pretty also

Yes, there is a reason! Thank you for the reminder to mention why I'm doing these videos. I'll have it updated in a minute.

Leave it to California to complicate flowers.
