I remember watching this video over a year ago when I graduated from my masters program and now I finally have the courage to take the exam in a couple of weeks! I appreciate you!! Update: I PASSED!!!!!!
Clearly you’re highly intelligent to be a not study type of person and able to make it through grad school. I have been a corner cutter my whole life. My first 3 attempts of the exam I didn’t want it half as badly as I want it now. I took it for the 4th time for the first time of actually trying really hard and failed by 4 points! I am taking my exam for the 5th time on Friday (2 days). Pray for me!
It was so comforting and nice to hear you say you were a lifelong nonstudier who did the bare minimum. I feel like I am totally this way and now I’m in the phase to do my internship and I feel so inadequate and like a failure for not having studied like I should’ve.🥺 so thanks for being honest and making this video.
I will most definitely use these techniques when I start studying for the next step in my career, because I too will be taking a 4 hour board exam! YIKES (biting my nails). Thanks for posting this very impressive topic! 100 thumbs up
Omg this video is a GOD SEND!!! I love how you are honest about your study habits in and out of school ( I feel like most people are not as much as they should) I have horrible study habits!! And I could relate to this video on so many levels. THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!!
Thank you so much for this amazing resource and information! I am in my second year of my MFT Masters program at Northcentral University also! The exam prep books are a major textbook utilized in my classes so far, as you mentioned. I really appreciate your resources for exam prep and will be using those for sure. I will specialize in sex therapy and plan to have my own practice around that for individuals and couples. So excited to have found your channel today! Also found your wired reactions quite a while ago and kept looking for more videos from you in wired. Excites to see you have reaction videos on this channel because I learned so much from them. Thanks!!!!!
We’re attending the same University! I’m finishing up year 2 as well. I’m scheduling my clinical orientation interview then I will be able to start tackling the clinical hours portion! Good luck to you on your journey!
Good evening. I just came across this video and these comments. I have watched some of her videos which I enjoy. Nonetheless, I received my master's in MFT from NCU last February. I'm taking my exam for the first time this Saturday. Long story short, try to have a general knowledge of everything while you're in school. Also, try to be supervised in the field after your degree to have that real life clinical experience. All of this may help you guys when it's your time to take the exam.
I am so stressed. I have failed twice already and I am taking my exam next week and so nervous. I just found your videos today and I wish I had more time watching your videos. Great flow of things.
You are a delight! Thank you for sharing your strategies! I appreciate how candid you were. Congrats on passing the exam and best of success in your new profession! Many thanks and much appreciation to you Steph!
It was great to stumble onto your channel. My test date is April 22. I bought the MFT Exam Pro app 3 weeks ago and I’m scoring about 98% for all 200 questions. I still have all of my flashcards from my masters program, even though I graduated three years ago. Is there a way you can post a link to the flashcards you used? Those might be very helpful. Luckily, I read and studied a ton during my program so I did learn a bunch of stuff. Even so, knowing how big and comprehensive the national exam is tends to be a bit overwhelming with so much on the line. Thank you for posting your video!
Thank you SO much!!! I take my exam in about 7 weeks and like you I only want to take it once. I plan to use the resources that you shared and pass this exam! Thank you again for sharing your story.
Yes, I dealt with so much anxiety during this time! I've learned that planning can really help me feel less anxious because I feel a little more in control. One Note helped me so much!
Steph Anya, MFT so that was One Note you kept your digital notes in. I keep digital notes for classes in Word. I tried writing them out. Didn’t work for me.
Girl, I’m a little bit worried. I don’t graduate until 2024, however I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t really need to read but definitely need to buckle down on study time. Thanks for the feedback. Just subscribed.
God willing, I'll graduate spring '24 also. The last year of my program is pre Practicum and then 3 practicums. Only 1 class a semester. Really drags it out but I'm excited to be starting. Good luck to you on your journey.
Just graduated May 7, 2022, took the NCE Sept 14 and passed ONLY by God's help. Scheduled to take the MFT on Feb 24. One thing I swiftly learned is that school (at least mine) doesn't teach you to pass the exams. They only teach you how to counsel which is NOT the same thing. Many of the questions (on practice, and actual exams) seemed foreign to classroom learning. Take a look at some practice exams now to get a sense of the questions, etc. My suggestions, to combat worry... first, if you know Christ, pray for the Spirit's help. secondly, begin combining studying for the exam alongside your school studies now to condition yourself (brain) on how to view, and answer the questions. It's good that you have an entire year to prepare. Hope this helps and praying great success.
I am in the same boat, lol. I graduate summer 2024. It's hard to keep up with all of the readings since I also work full time. I was sooo anxious before watching her video, but it definitely gave me some comfort hearing she seems to be a similar student to me.
Thank you! Soooo much for this information, I just took my LMFT exam and failed which was my second time taking it. You imparted som helpful tips that I am going to utilize immediately! Especially the app for the cell. Again, thank you!
New subscriber here! I just graduated from my masters program and I’m prepping for the test now and I’m so grateful to have come across your channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you for all of this info! Your videos are beneficial as I have been navigating my Masters's program. I am curious about how you studied/read during your program. Thank you again!
Hello! I’m new to your channel! Loved the content and the resources! I would like to see a video on test-taking strategy about how to answer the questions in the exam. I’ve studying and I find difficulty in how to answer what specifically is asking the question. Thank you!!
Everything you said I stand by it all. I literally took this exam five years ago five consecutive times and didn't pass it into the last time I took it. I spent upwards to probably 4k+ paying for study material, study exams, and the exam itself. I struggled a lot with being able to get over the hump. If it was not for by the grace of God, I would not have ever passed that exam. But anyone that is watching this video. Please take heed to the material and the resources that she shared because Those are the exact ones that I was able to use my last go. Around, which allowed me to pass the test as well.
I am currently using the FSI MFT study book. In school, we took practice exams and it was very difficult, but I haven't been in school for 4 years! I'm trying to keep in mind that there are many LMFT's who passed and if they can do it, anyone else who is serious about being a therapist can do it too. (I think 🤔 😂) Thank you for this video!
The hardest exam I have ever taken was the NCE (National Counselor Examination) and I walked out of the testing center just sure that I had failed. I didn't...I passed the first time around with a good grade! I did fail my LCDC exam because everyone told me that if I passed the NCE, that the LCDC exam was a cake walk, so I didn't study. It was NOT a cakewalk, and I am trying to build the courage to take it again soon. I think I was traumatized by the experience, so I'm not in a hurry to take it again. Thanks for this video!
Hi @@StephAnya, can you let me know if the study books from AATBS had any outlines, diagrams, charts or even graphics? As a visual learner, those things help. Another thing that helps is if I can find study materials that are easy to read for me to do graphics or mind maps to better retain. Let me know if you recommend those study materials you used for visual learners, thank you!! 🙏
Congrats! I relate to your story as I feel I am a solid student but totally failed my first practice exam. Was there anything you wish you had focused less on? Anything you wish you had focused more on? Thanks for the tips, keep them coming!
I’m glad you can relate! I would say that on my particular exam, the genogram wasn’t as emphasized as I thought it would be. Otherwise, I felt pretty good about what AATBS focused on in their books. Oh! Also the history of which model came first and the year it was made and why wasn’t on there, but you definitely want to know who developed the model.
Really great information, Im in Illinois, I was wondering if that app is a general app for all over, I'm looking around to see where I can even get started and what programs or schools I have to go to , so as I search for that, I wasn't to get ahead by studying and getting familiar with it now.
Your video is nice because you are optimistic thanks. I have practiced for over 14yrs. But due to an accident and loss of right foot had passed the LPC state exam in CO but because I was a Masters oas M/MFCT they wanted a course in career development and training. I was of course unable to do at that time. I then ended up on SSDI. Now so much time has passed but I want to finish anyway but am now in NV. So need my hrs verified/signed off then they will set up exam which will be much easier for me than the LPC no statistics lol. Your UTube looks like I will add to personal studies thank you
Hello Steph, I'm an MFT and getting ready to take my exam on Oct 6th. Would you care to share your study schedule with me? I have been studying and I'm getting somewhere but I do not believe that I am as organized as I can be. I def plan to utilize the tips that you provided. Thank you so much for this video!
Steph! I listened to your videos, some Gehart videos, and bought the AATBS study prep. I took the exam for my first time yesterday and I was underwhelmed. Some questions didn’t have any good answers. The questions were random and unclear. I felt bored compared to the AATBS test questions. I was ready for hard hitting questions and did not feel there were any. I’m praying to God I passed but I am feeling uncertain. Is there such a thing as feeling over prepared? I had over and hour and a half even after going back to do the questions I flagged. I went back over my exam but it was too tedious to do all of them so I took a breath and submitted it. I didn’t have much test anxiety and felt confident. So I either did well or completely bombed it. I guess I’ll find out in 20 business days or less.
The videos by Diane Gehart were super helpful! Thanks for sharing that resource. I passed on my first attempt. The wait for results almost killed me but hallelujah, it's done!
Have you ever considered Gerry Grossman's study materials such as the test banks or their DSM flashcards? If so let me know if those flashcards are worth it as an addition to the "self-study" package from AATBS
Thank you so much for your videos. They are very helpful. I tried looking for the app for extra study. Are they available for android as well? I can't seem to find them.
Do you recommend the live online instruction; 3 or 6 month access; digital or books? I'm testing in April. I just received my PhD and have been out of the MFT program for years under supervision. I don't really recall much but have been practicing as an associate.
Hello...I have a question can you please share which package you used from AATBS? I am purchasing it because my university did not offer to us. I want to make sure that I am choosing the right one before I invest this money, thanks!
This was so helpful! Thank you! I was wondering how far in advance you started studying? I believe you mentioned you started to study 6 weeks prior to the test date?
@@StephAnya I am stuck between the AATBS and the Therapist Development Center package due to the price and the designated videos is the AATBS the one you would go with even if it is extra? Do you know much about the TDC one? So bad at making decisions LOL
I’ve heard some great things about TDC! I just cannot personally vouch for it since I’ve never used it or even seen it. AATBS was included in my tuition so I just went with that. However, I think as long as you’re thoroughly studying, you should be fine with either.
I get anxiety when I take exam I also second guess my self. I graduate next year so I will most definitely get the materials that you mentioned thanks for a great video
Hi Steph! I just started the MFT program at NCU and I was so glad that you went to the same school. I had a question: once I graduate from the MFT program, can I start working and making money even though I am still earning my hours?
When you request a break during test taking time is that time taken out of your exam with the timer still running or do they pause it for you? (for the AMFTRB)
would you be able to share your study schedule. I am reataking in a month and a half and want to see if I am on track as practice tests are still around 50%
I'm curious to know how much time elapsed between you failing your practice exam and then passing the licensure exam. I didn't catch if you mentioned it in the video.
how to not get sleepy and be completely cognizant during the exam ?? 200 questions seems a lot and it looks like a real challenge for someone like me who is very lazy most time of the day and not a good reader, looks like the questions are very descriptive and u need to read the whole question to be able to answer the questions on the paper, also are these all 200 questions multiple choice or are there any subjective questions answers too which need us to write essays ?
Are the AATBS study materials really worth it? There are a lot of other options that are far more affordable and some online materials that you can purchase as well.
Hi Joseph! I can only say that I found them to be very useful. There may be other options that are just as good if not better, I just never tried them because this is what was included in my tuition.
What software program did you use for your digital notes? I need to change over to this. I have so, so many volumes of hand written notes and it's hard to find anything. Thanks.
Hi Steph, I am in the process of applying to a graduate school to enroll in their MFT program. I submitted all of my paperwork and all that is left is my personal essay. The topic is to state your weaknesses and strengths and how it will affect you as a therapist and as a student. Do you have any advice???? I'm stuck on this question--
Girl, I take the test for the 2nd time in 2 days. I am stressed. I keep getting like 67-70% on the mock tests. Do you have any comments? I am so frustrated by this test. It's the HARDEST test that makes VERY LITTLE SENSE content wise.....they try to trick you....they don't play fair.....and how the heck are we supposed to remember all the ins and outs of the gazillions of therapies? I did buy the app and I study it every time I have a fee moment. I also took Therapist Development Center but found their practice MOCK tests nothing like their study materials. I just have to pass this time or I won't be able to keep my job. I've been working 1 1/2 years because of COVID and the constant canceling of tests.....but I can't keep my job if I don't pass the stinking test. Thanks for your awesome posts!!
Sorry to hear that! That’s stressful. I hate that the mock tests don’t align with the materials for TDC. I used AATBS where they explained the rationale for every question and I really zoned in on that.
Wow!!! I purchased the TDC also and found their study materials not to be the best for the exam. The exam is a mess and I am highly upset about the content and how they trick us. I am waiting for my results now and I’m not feeling great.
My school uses Family Solutions Institute for study materials. Have you heard of them? If so, do you think the AATBS is better? Or does it make a difference? I have a way to go but want to learn what I will be facing. I love your videos! Thank you
I haven't heard of them or tried them so I can't say. If it's included in your program though. I'd stick with it and just be sure to take all of the practice exams and quizzes if they have them.
Hi Jeanine! I’ll be doing a structural family therapy video soon as you requested! Are you comfortable with your name and picture included or would you prefer they be hidden?
Great information! I am still a first year student and need some help figuring out how to study for the exam. Can you retake the AATBS exams over and over again or only the one time?
I’m in my first year of my bachelors and have my heart set on becoming a MFT I’m a very long way from the exam but my only problem is I’m dyslexic and I’m worried the licensure exam won’t let you have accommodations such as extended time
Try to contact your state licensure board and they can tell you :) I have to imagine they have some kind of accomodations. Even some of the practice tests I see have the option for accomodations.
Hey Steph! I am currently in my 3rd year of my Masters Program for MFT Seeking licensure. I wanted to know did you have to acquire a certain amount of hours before taking the exam? And did you receive all those hours during internship and practicum or you had to acquire the hours after your degree was conferred?
Hi! Yes, I needed 500 hours and I got them through my practicum. I talk more in detail about my process in "10 Steps to Become a Licensed Therapist." I hope this helps!
Umm she said, Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist? You aren't licensed when you are an AMFT. You are registered. You are licensed when you are officially an LMFT. I'm confused.
AATBS does not have the best program. Lots of gross errors and bad rationales I even other Licensed Therapist ask where did i get the info. Dr. Diane Gerhart is great!! TDC is great as well. congrats. to you for passing.
Sorry to hear that you didn't have a good experience with them. My colleagues, classmates, and I found the information and rationales to be very helpful. I don't know anyone personally who has used them and didn't pass the exam. To be fair, I've never tried any of the other materials, so thank you for sharing other options for anyone who may be experiencing similar frustrations with AATBS!

I have been studying and I'm getting somewhere but I do not believe that I am as organized as I can be. I def plan to utilize the tips that you provided. Thank you so much for this video!
I am not where this video is for taking the test but I started applying for this degree. So I hope I can get in and start in this program.
Is there anyway you can maybe provide a video on the process of applying to take the test?
Yes, I'm working on this!
Super helpful. I'm 2 weeks away from mine. Thanks for the resources!
Good luck!!
@@StephAnya Much appreciated!
The videos by Diane Gehart were super helpful! Thanks for sharing that resource. I passed on my first attempt. The wait for results almost killed me but hallelujah, it's done!
About to graduate from my masters program. Are there any updated things you would suggest? I am considering buying the therapist development center
Thank you for sharing! What was the hardest part of the Masters program? Im getting anxiety on research papers.
Have you ever considered Gerry Grossman's study materials such as the test banks or their DSM flashcards? If so let me know if those flashcards are worth it as an addition to the "self-study" package from AATBS
I haven't heard of those materials!
Hello. I can't find the study guide in this video. Could you please send me the author or year published? Thank you
Thank you so much for your videos.
Yes! 6 weeks of daily studying. Maybe an additional 3 months of just casual
@@StephAnya Thank you!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! Would you recommend doing the AATBS study package?
Thank you so much for watching! I did and I love it!
@@StephAnya I am stuck between the AATBS and the Therapist Development Center package due to the price and the designated videos is the AATBS the one you would go with even if it is extra? Do you know much about the TDC one? So bad at making decisions LOL
Also the TDC package is a free renewal if you do not pass whereas the AATBS is 50% of original price. Am so stuck lol
That’s actually one of the first things they talk about in AATBS. Don’t skip it! Their tips for test anxiety actually helped me a lot.
Thanks so much for this! For AATBS, did you buy the digital or printed? I'm considering buying one package so I'd like your input!
I actually had both!
Hi Steph! I just started the MFT program at NCU and I was so glad that you went to the same school. I had a question: once I graduate from the MFT program, can I start working and making money even though I am still earning my hours?
Hi Frank! Yes! Maybe even before.
When you request a break during test taking time is that time taken out of your exam with the timer still running or do they pause it for you? (for the AMFTRB)
Great Job!!!!
Thank you!! ♥️
would you be able to share your study schedule. I am reataking in a month and a half and want to see if I am on track as practice tests are still around 50%
I’m on the website for AATBS. Which bundle should I buy (studying for
I'm curious to know how much time elapsed between you failing your practice exam and then passing the licensure exam. I didn't catch if you mentioned it in the video.
What digital space did you take your notes on? Wanting to make notes and use the search technique as well! ♥️ thank you for this video!
One Note!
Is there an alternative app for Android?
how to not get sleepy and be completely cognizant during the exam ?? 200 questions seems a lot and it looks like a real challenge for someone like me who is very lazy most time of the day and not a good reader, looks like the questions are very descriptive and u need to read the whole question to be able to answer the questions on the paper, also are these all 200 questions multiple choice or are there any subjective questions answers too which need us to write essays ?
Do you know if there is a good resource for practicing for the LCPC exam?
Are the AATBS study materials really worth it? There are a lot of other options that are far more affordable and some online materials that you can purchase as well.
Hi Joseph! I can only say that I found them to be very useful. There may be other options that are just as good if not better, I just never tried them because this is what was included in my tuition.
Do you have a video on Contextual Family Therapy?
No I don’t! Would you like that?
@@StephAnya ... Yes please
What software program did you use for your digital notes? I need to change over to this. I have so, so many volumes of hand written notes and it's hard to find anything. Thanks.
OneNote!
@@StephAnya Thank you!
Hi Steph, I am in the process of applying to a graduate school to enroll in their MFT program. I submitted all of my paperwork and all that is left is my personal essay. The topic is to state your weaknesses and strengths and how it will affect you as a therapist and as a student. Do you have any advice???? I'm stuck on this question--
Hey steph, what insight do you have for your ethics state exam?
THIS WAS EVERYTHING!! Now I know how to prepare for all of this lol
Yay! Thanks, Melissa!
Hi Stephanie, how did you prepare your digital study notes?
Ah this is a great video idea! Thank you!
Yes, That’s an area that I struggle with. Im not really tech savvy so having some kind of guidance would be helpful.
Hi! I would love to pick your brain about test prep! Do you do coaching?
Hi Katrina! I offer consultations at www.whatsanyamind.com
I had to type in the name for Diane G because the link did not work. Just saying just in case you get credit for it!
Thanks for letting me know! I don’t get credit, but I want to help. I’ll fix it.
Steph Anya, MFT Thank you!!
Hi Jeanine! I’ll be doing a structural family therapy video soon as you requested! Are you comfortable with your name and picture included or would you prefer they be hidden?
Steph Anya, MFT Hi Steph! I am fine with you using my name and picture. Looking forward to your video!
Great information! I am still a first year student and need some help figuring out how to study for the exam. Can you retake the AATBS exams over and over again or only the one time?
You can retake them I believe! There are 5 though, so I never took one twice.
@@StephAnya thanks! BTW-I’m NCU as well 👍🏼 if you’re ever in Vegas we should collab!
Oh great! It should be included with your tuition then.
I’m in my first year of my bachelors and have my heart set on becoming a MFT I’m a very long way from the exam but my only problem is I’m dyslexic and I’m worried the licensure exam won’t let you have accommodations such as extended time
Most likely they will accommodate. I know Board of Paychology will
Try to contact your state licensure board and they can tell you :) I have to imagine they have some kind of accomodations. Even some of the practice tests I see have the option for accomodations.
Are you willing to sale your study book ?
Congratulations 😄 Do you have one for passing the Law and ethics. I am waiting for my associates but I started studying:)
Thank you! Ethics was a part of the national exam for me. Do you have to take a separate exam for it?
Steph Anya, MFT Yes in Cali. Once I get my associates, I have one year to take the law and ethics exam in order to renew it.
No, unfortunately it was just one section of the national exam and I don’t have more extensive materials
@@StephAnya Thank you ❤️
@@StephAnya Yes Ma’am it did! Thank You
Umm she said, Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist?
You aren't licensed when you are an AMFT. You are registered. You are licensed when you are officially an LMFT. I'm confused.
Depends on the state! We don’t use the the term registered. This is an old video anyhow. I’m fully licensed now.
Are the questions MCQ?
When I took it, yes!
My exam is in January. I don't know how to study. I feel like I'm all over the place. 😔
Hi Eric, how did you do on the exam? I'm studying for it now for April 2023.
Hay quá
Hi can I please talk to you I need advice !
Hi Juana! Are you looking for a therapist or do you need advice regarding becoming a therapist?
AATBS does not have the best program. Lots of gross errors and bad rationales
I even other Licensed Therapist ask where did i get the info.
