  • Part five of the video series looking at the Hotstart TBM 900 in X-Plane 11. Flying from Dundee EGPN to Glenforsa on the Island of Mull, X6MU. Enroute we look at ice protection, minimum safe altitudes and briefly consider fuel reserves. Finally we fly the challenging approach to runway 07 at Glenforsa.
    Interestingly the code X6MU originated with a flight simmer called John Woodside about 20 years ago as part of his UK Airfields project, and yet these codes have been adopted into many real aviation web sites!

    I found 3jFPS to really help with X-Plane weather system causing frame rate drop, it made this video possible, maybe it could help you too.

    Errors, Omissions, Clarifications:-
    Error: Don't forget to reset the altimeter from STD to QNH! I always use 1013 anyway, but this is a pitfall in the G1000 not showing FL040 rather than 4000 when the wrong setting is used.
    Clarification: MORA - Minimum Off Route Altitude - 1000ft above the dominant obstacle or 1300ft above terrain in a set grid square. MEF - Maximum Elevation Figure - does not have the 1000ft altitude increase but should allow for 299ft obstacle. So Ben Nevis, 4413ft, rounded to 4500ft, add 300 for any uncharted mast, 4800ft (MEF) + 1000ft = 5800ft MORA. Skyvector VFR appears to show MORA but doesn't include the 300ft margin.

    - Safe Altitudes
    - Fuel Reserves

      You’re very welcome Edward - it’s always nice to explore the full range of what an aircraft can do, and not just autopilot-to-ILS all the time.

    Dear sir, it is always a pleasure to see any part of of your instructional videos. I've played your A320 guide over and over till it went grey and can trully say that you have given me a lot of pleasure in that particular airframe. Seeing you back after some absence is indeed a great pleasure, your way of tutoring and instructing is very relaxed yet very detailed. I will glady follow and recommend any of your guides. Hope to see more

    Thanks once again for a great video! I only just got back into flight simming (been doing it on and off for 30 years since I was 10) and came across this series looking for videos on the TBM900 in X-Plane. Loving your presentation style, calm laid-back real-world pilot attitude and the heaps of technical detail in these videos. Thanks once again, best of luck and stay safe in these weird times!

    The "Icing" on the cake, thank you Graham for another great video.
    Yes, arming VNAV less than 5mins ahead works.
    Alpha gage in Vulcan does not work yet, the dev is aware and probably on it already...

    The way you fly the TBM by the book is refreshing! I learn something in every video: it had escaped my attention ignition should be on in icing conditions. Parking breaks should be off after the chocks are in by the way. I am envious of your stick and rudder skills as you are always exactly at the speed you should be at. Looking forward to the last two in the series and hoping you decide to do a few extra ones 😋 afterwards. By the way, if you have an iPhone or android device, download the free TBM Performance app. It helps immensely in flight planning. Thanks!

    Another FANTASTIC video, but, no thanks to LR, the G1000 vnav simply would not engage properly, despite my every attempt. I honestly don't know what is going on with their system, but it is not working properly and should be fixed by now. Seems like I'm not the only one having troubles with the VNAV on the LR G1000, but it's frustrating to have a fantastic flight to a really cool airport, then have to scramble to make something happen the right way...
    BUT, doesn't detract from ANOTHER great video. Would LOVE to see more. Hope you and yours are well. Please involve your ATC daughter more often, too!
    That was a brilliant approach and landing, btw. You made it look easy. And it is NOT.

    Love your great content. I couldn't be more grateful for all of your work. :) . I love the TBM9, using the G1000 is a great learning tool also (even not being completed as IRL), sadly after several hours of flying it on x-plane It starts to get a little boring because of the nature of the G1000 itself being a "GPS" beast. VOR to VOR navigation just doesn't work because of how the Garmin is constructed. Having only one OBS + CDI in the G1000 makes not so easy to track your course more than one, and having to change between them with HDG to jump from NAV1 to NAV2 and viceversa.. you understand me :) , I really miss old school steam gauges when I encounter those "issues". No doubt in real life this is a different story. I am only talking here about XP11and for me being sit for hours just staring at the monitor doing not much is not something I enjoy that much. I will try to find more challenging routes as you did for example between EGPH-EGPN or here in this vid, are very refreshing. Anyway, thanks a lot for your time.

      Thanks, you’re quite welcome. Have you tried using the bearing pointers for VOR 1 and 2 as they can be shown simultaneously? The G1000 is actually quite similar to an airliner fit where NAV/VOR 1 is on the Captains side, and 2 on the FO’s side, but you can show bearing pointers for both, and the ADF, on both sides. For example, flying along a radial with VOR 1 on the CDI you can monitor crossing radials for VOR 2 on the bearing pointer (the tail of the needles is effectively the radial). Once you get used to flying “on the needles” it’s fairly easy, and a worthwhile challenge!

      Thanks for the nice feedback. I’ve been considering what to do next: perhaps a slightly less complex aircraft that I can produce slightly shorter videos for. I’ve been thinking about either the vFlyteAir C42 or the Torquesim Islander. However, the C42 seems to be largely abandoned and the Islander is still very new and has a few little oddities at the moment. What sort of thing would you like to see next?

    If you arm the VNAV more than 5 min before TOD, you must re-arm it at less than 1 minute before TOD. So, normally I set the lower altitude then wait till I get the 5 min audio cue from B. Betty, and then arm VNAV... and all is well.

      It was a place I always wanted to visit, but never got around to it. Now I live too far away to do it easily at a 85 kt cruise! A few friends have been there though and said it was a lovely destination, but summer only for most nose gear piston singles.

    I am so glad that you brought up the VNAV having issues engaging. I thought that I was just doing something wrong. I will start engaging it now when I here the vertical track. Not related to the video but I have been wondering what your system specs are, and what you use for addon programs such as scenery, atc, aircraft, etc. What do you use for hardware? I have been curious. Seems like you have always have smooth frame rates. Personally, I have a i7 7700k o.c. to 4.8ghz, gtx 1080ti o.c., 32gb 3600mhz ram, I have a 512gb m.2 nvme ssd for my OS and 2 1TB m.2 nvme ssd for sim and misc. I have the Honeycomb yoke, thrustmaster pedals, I also have the logitech x56 hotas and I use the throttle for my GA flying. I have been holding out for the Honeycomb throttle quadrant to be released. I used to fly DCS the most but since the tbm900 has been released I fly xplane now 99% of the time.

      I’ve got a very old PC, from early 2012 with a newer GPU. I don’t tend to run addon scenery, other than a little bit of ortho, I’ve also been flying in very simple weather, although 3jFPS has helped with cloud frame rates a lot. i5-2500K o/c 4.5GHz, PIZ68V-LE board, 8GB DDR3, GTX 1060 6GB GPU, Windows 7 on a Kingston A400 240GB SSD with 3 older 1TB HDDs. I’ll need to upgrade to Windows 10 to run Vulkan, so I plan to go to a clean Windows install on a new 480GB SSD and use the 240GB SSD solely for X-Plane. After that mainboard, CPU and ram will get changed out and hopefully move to a M.2 SSD.

      @@ReflectedRealitySimulations what do you use for flying hardware?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 года назад

      My joystick is an old Saitek Cyborg Evo 3D from about 2003! (The exposed spring means I can reduce the spring force for flying helicopters by clamping the spring with a tiewrap) I’ve also got the CH Products Yoke and Pedals, but don’t really use them anymore. If I were to change them it would probably be for the X56, but I like a stick with a very light centring force.

    • @VikingsFan27
      @VikingsFan27 4 года назад

      @@ReflectedRealitySimulations If you do upgrade I strongly encourage you to spend the extra money and get the warthog hotas. It is far more real feeling than the x56. I think you will be much happier with the warthog as it has dual engine control and a smattering of buttons to program.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 года назад

      Warthog does look good and I loved flying the DCS A10 so would be a good option - some people say the stick is quite heavy - a fairly high “breakout” centre load?

      Yes as albula642 says the freeware "Avitab" plugin is integrated in the TBM so you just need to install it. The maps I've been using are generated with another application called "LittleNavMap".

      Hello Paul, thanks for the nice comment. No I'm running 11.41. I'm on Windows 7 so think I need to upgrade to Windows 10 before I can use Vulkan. I know the developer is aware that the AoA doesn't work with Vulkan so hopefully they'll be able to correct that soon.

    when do we use vertical mode in radar

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 года назад

      Good question! I’ve not used a radar with this capability, but it would be useful to assess the height of any radar return. For example it may be possible to fly over the weather rather than deviate. Without this capability we use the tilt setting. Tilt the radar to find the top of the return. The 1-in-60 rule is a fairly common aviation rule of thumb. 1 degree over 60 miles is 1 mile off course. With the radar this same rule can be used. 100ft per mile for every degree. (1000ft/10nm, 6000ft/60nm) So if a return 20 miles away shows at -2.5 and disappears at -2.0 then it’s 4000ft below the aircraft. The vertical mode should make this mental math unnecessary.

    hello Graeme, another great one! Many thanks. I would also like to have your input on how to use LNM on the Ipad. Is it possible to send me a PM on the Hotstart Discord server (nick is bguerra77). I noticed the BARO was kept at STD all the way after taking off, is this on purpose? Thank you once again for the great video.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 года назад +1

      Hello Bruno, Yes will try my best to explain the LittleNavMap stuff, but may take a few days as I'm trying to get the rest of the video series done first! LNM has an excellent manual available that details how it all works - the menu option you're looking for is "File > Save Map as Image for Avitab", then you can simply load the image using AviTab's "Mercator" option. Regarding the pressure setting - the UK has a low transition altitude of between 3-6000ft, and in the case of this route I was trying to stay below an airway that started at FL085 hence setting STD early on departure, however yes I forgot to reset back to QNH/Altimeter in descent! This is down to a bit of laziness on my part as I always fly 1013 in the sim, and the PFD on my day to day aircraft changes from, for example "8000" to "FL080" when on standard, so I simply missed the cue to change over. In all my videos I have "Errors, Omissions, Clarifications" in the description as there's usually always something not quite right when I watch the video back. This mistake is noted in there, so always worth checking. Thanks for the nice comment and glad you've been enjoying the series so far.
