- Hi we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves. Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week we get an amazing delivery and do a bit more storm clear up!

The fact that a man read the instructions is amazing never mind that he followed them too😂
🤣🤣 with my help, of course! 😉
It’s a little known fact that us men can’t actually do most things without instructions. We’re just better at remembering how similar tasks were done in the past, rendering future jobs less dependent on the supplied instructions.
That said, I always throw an eye over the instructions, in case something has been upgraded, or a sneaky design difference has escaped my eye. I get a lot of teasing over it, but I do have a reputation for doing it right first time, so tease away!
Another well concealed fact is, men CAN multitask! I do it all the time. Most just don’t want to, because the workload increases in direct proportion to the amount you’re able to do. So, if you’re able to load the dishwasher, you’ll be expected to do it.
If you’re able to load it, run it, feed and change the baby, cook the dinner, sort the laundry and load the washing machine, unload the dishwasher and serve the meal, guess what? You’ll be expected to do that! Who’d be a woman, right?
Well, it turns out I’m actually better at the multitasking thing, so I tend to do that and, for us it makes sense.
OH! so that's what that little booklet is for. I thought it was part of the packing.😉@@duncancremin1708
With all the wind it may be a good idea to peg the chicken coop down.
I was thinking the same thing as I remembered the trampoline blowing across the field.
Don't worry it is well weighted down in its new location. We will show everyone next week. 👍
Well done again v. Enjoyable 😊😊
A Rooster is absolutely necessary for breeding and hens are happier. Watching the Cockerell look after and keep the girls in order is fun. Not too many as they would fight and take all the feathers off their backs. I have kept chickens for 40 years nearly now. Fresh grass fed eggs are amazing and giving some to the neighbours will keep them happy. Small Cockerells are just as noisy if not more than bug ones.
Thanks that's really interesting to read, seems most people are against a cockerel so good to read it from the other angle. The kids are so excited to find that first egg! ❤️
Check the legs. Should be smooth and thin for 16wk old poulits.
Ask your neighbors if they have any problems with a cockerel, ours asked where our cockerel was as they loved the sound. there are lovers and haters of cockerels. Best of luck.
A few free fresh grass fed eggs will smooth things out.
The neighbours had a cockerel in their previous home, so all good from their point of view, luckily. 👍
In our experience the neighbours loved the return of the Cockerell.
Now your property starts to take shape. Junk moved, trees chopped, land fenced.
It definitely feels that way, like we are starting to make some progress at last. Thank you. 👍
No to cockerel Rebecca. As a seasoned hen keeper the girls are humped several times a day and are unable to escape as they most certainly would if free ranging in woods. They end up more poorly and shabby looking due to feathers being pulled off with every mount. They literally won’t be able to escape him. You won’t appreciate 3-4am crowing no matter how romantic it seems and your neighbour will have no choice in whether or not they hear it. Sorry to be a Debbie downer but you’d end up looking to rehome him. Also if you do a hatch you’ll end up with half of them being cockerels. Enjoy your girls ❤️🌿
Word's of wisdom
100% true. It's stressful for the hens.
I totally agree and add that roosters can be very aggressive towards people and pets. As a child I lived in fear of my Auntie Mary's rooster. I swear that son of Saten was 3 feet tall.
😅
Love how you phrased this message, very interesting to read. Thank you. I had heard the ladies often have a hard time with a cockerel around, so it's definitely something to consider. 👍❤️
When I read your title I thought it was Toby coming. But chicken coop is great. Looks the business. 😊
Fingers crossed that will be a video title in the near future. 🍀🤞
Oohh, stake that coop down 😂 I am imagining chickens flying to the land of Oz.
Don't worry it is well weighted down in its new location. We will show everyone next week. 👍
The answer to the rooster really depends on the rooster you get. We have had our coop with one and without one. A rooster will protect his flock, which is good for predators. However, some roosters will also protect the flock against you too. We had a problem with one going after the kids and we had another one that was so sweet and loved the attention from the kids. You kind of take your chances.
Yes I think it's a gamble for sure. Lots of thinking to do. Thanks for giving us your experience. 👍❤️
It’s such a process for your family to get through. But as an unknown admirer from far away I’m just so excited for this journey to unfold. Your story could really be any one of us. You’re all just so lovely and I wish you success the whole way along. Thank you so much for letting us join you on every step. Love from 🇨🇦
Thank you so much for the support. We are so glad you're enjoying the journey unfold all the way from Canada.
Just think that potentially the next loads to the tip will soon be the debris and waste from the clear out of the house build to get started on the restoration. Will make a massive difference once animals are back to the homesteading, if you think how many decades it is has been derelict and lifeless and now it is beginning to bloom. You will very soon be heading off to the "building site" with a lovely homemade breakfast of fresh eggs off the land.
Thanks Joe, lovely to look at it like that, and hopefully, we will have fresh eggs every day. Sam will definitely need to keep his energy levels up.
I have had chickens for years. I live in a semi rural place and roosters are not allowed. My hens did just fine without a rooster. They didn't get beaten up and were happy. You don't need a rooster to get eggs. When one of the hens went broody I let her sit on golf balls for about 4 weeks and then snuck chicks under her. It was quite comical seeing a Buff Orphinton hen with a bunch of banty chicks in the yard!
Ha ha golf balls! Brilliant idea! Thank you for the info, much appreciated.
Once you have a garden or a farm you really don't need a membership of a gym.
Yes you really don't! 🤣
You are doing amazing, so glad you survived the storm, I did think I hope you are all ok....the coop looks great, onwards and upwards lovely people ❤🇬🇧
Thanks so much Sharon. We are ok and surviving all these bad wind storms. Hope they disappear soon. 🤞😫
It's awesome how everything is coming together. Spring is on it's way, lots to look forward too. ♥♥♥♥ and one for Toby♥
Thanks, David. Sooo looking forward to Spring! ❤️
Fantastic to see you again
The place is coming on great
☘️☘️🇮🇪
Thank you! 😃
I'm starting this in about a year also in Ireland!
Good luck, it will be the best thing you have ever done.
You don’t need a rooster. I had three hens who laid eggs every day. Unless you want baby chicks, you don’t need a rooster.
Exactly he can come at a later date 😀
Sound advice, thanks. 👍
I've always had a rooster with my hens. He keeps them in order and protects them and you get baby chicks!! Nice work guys, this place is going to be amazing when you are finished, and I'm happy to be along for the ride!
Thank you so much for the support & advice, really kind of you. ❤️👍
Yay chickens! A rooster is a must, plus if you are lucky you will get a broody hen and baby chicks.
Hi, great watching your journey,
Not an expert but think you need to bury the pipe under the frost line.
100% and the frost line in Ireland is 29 inches or 750mm !!! Here In Pennsylvania U.S. it is 44 inches ! Or maybe cover it with straw to insulate the pipe if you cant dig a ditch for it ! Or let the water drip into the sink as long as there is movement it shouldnt freeze !
Easier said than done on 100s of metres of pipe in land that isn't ours lol. We will hopefully be connected to the mains supply soon which will be buried. I think we will just have to accept it for now.
@@theirishhomestead , tnolan's last statement is correct, a little dripping tap will perevent freezing pipes all through winter, they use it in the Alps. Ref Martyn Doolard on you tube.
The crazy kitten footage is always my favorite, so is them on timelapse while you’re outside doing stuff and they’re running about living their best lives! 😂❤
They are totally fearless! Always good fun when they are around. I love my cat cuddles every morning. ♥️
I'll bet you feel a real sense of accomplishment once your site is clear of all that trash. The cladding of the mobile home was marvelous, but having the trash picked up and taken away has got to be freeing.
A chicken coup will be fun. You might want to secure it with some rebar pins in case the wind comes back up. I'm not normally a Negative Nellie, but you've had some whipping great winds lately. I'd hate for your chicken coup to pull a "Dorothy" (Wizard of Oz)!!! 🌪🌪🌪
With all the trees down, I gather the land is really saturated. You're overdue for some dry weather.
If you want eggs fertilized you need a cockeral. If you want breakfast, skip the rooster. 😉
Thanks Abigail, tidy land tidy mind! That's how if feels anyway. It is nice to see it gone. We are all so excited for the hens to come, the kids cannot wait to collect eggs 🤞 The winds are a worry but we have moved to coop and you will see next week it's secured down well. I'll not be sleeping when we have bad winds now for fear of the chicken coop taking off! Just hope we have done enough to stop that from happening. ❤️
Ash makes good axe handles. Have you watched Eoin Reardon? A young Irishman who shows you how to split logs like that for wood. He is a great laugh.
We have just searched him out and watching him now, thanks! 👍
Eoin is brilliant to watch. The way his channel grew is phenomenal.
HELLO FROM CANADA! yes you can do this, and you all will do this! i envy the wonderful life you are creating! wish i was 30 years younger i would have LOVED to do what you all are doing!
Aww thank you, so nice of you to say that. Hopefully we can do the place justice. 🤞
Cockerels are extremely noisy and because they are so protective over their females, they can actually be quite aggressive towards their owners. So, although they are protective over their brood, they can be little buggers to live with. A brood of hens will usually have a hierarchy anyway.....hence the "pecking order" saying. So even if you don't get a cockerel, there will always be a head hen that rules the roost. If it was me, I'd forgo the Cockerel for now particularly considering how noisy they are and that there are neighbours close by. I wouldn't want to annoy my neighbours with daily 5am wake up calls from a Cockerel, teehee.. You may have to anchor the Omlet down with the winds here in Ireland and maybe consider getting some chicken wire to extend from the cage, down under the ground a bit. Foxes and Irish stoats love chickens and they are smart wee fellas, and love to dig under cages. Your wee kitties at the end were so cute. Reminds me of my monster of a cat, teehee. Big hello from County Down, up North. Lee xx
My neighbours got a cockerel and I love hearing it, but their dog barking makes me mad!
Oh a barking dog can be so infuriating. My next door neighbour has 2 and they drive us bonkers. The joys of living on a small Island were we are practically living on top of each other, lol.@@lisejacquelinerigault2575
Thanks so much for the advice, so kind of you to take the time to do that. Don't worry the Omlet is well weighted down in its new location and has a mesh skirt for making life harder for predators. We will show everyone next week. Thanks for the info on the cockerel - a lot to think about there. ❤️👍
We had an omlet chicken coop with a nice high walk in run it was brilliant. Easy to keep clean and very secure, absolutely recommend this company.
Thanks, so good to hear. I did read really good reviews on the Facebook chicken keeping pages.
In case you missed my last tip, you need to cut the ivy at the bottom of your trees and pull as much of it down as you can. It is the ivy growing on your trees in the winter that renders them vulnerable to high winds. 💓
Hi,, I did spend a few days back in the autumn cutting the ivy at the base of all the trees. I think it takes a while to die and fall off sadly. 😒
Wood gives you heat 2 times when you logging it and when you burn it 😅
Very true Lisa! 🥵
What a wicked chicken house and run. You lucky ducks! (Well, chickens 🤣)
Lol thanks Sue ❤️
Always funny for a Cdn to hear ‘should i get a cockerel?’ That’s my maiden name Cockerill. In Canada we only call them roosters. I agree with other comments just have the hens for a while until you get a routine. Some (kids, neighbours) might not appreciate the sounds early in the morning. You can probably get baby chicks at a later date. You better peg down that coop on the sides. Also water line probably needs to be buried below the frost line. No way we could do that here. 🇨🇦. Have a great week
We will definitely stick to just the girls for a while. How funny for you to hear us say Cockerel when it's your surname. The coop is now in a new position and hopefully very secured down! Trust me after moving it twice that thing is heavy! Thanks for the tips. 👍
Sam and Euan were busy getting the rubbish all tidy and a lot of it in the trailer. Hard to believe so much until it is in piles. The coop looks fantastic and a nice size.Sam I think for the moment you can not put away your chainsaw as looking at your trees I think you will have more down. Its a shame but age and storm's take their toll.As you said no need for Gym membership
Beccles and Euan on barrow duty .Take care and God Bless xx
Thanks Colette, yes sadly I think the tree clearing will continue for a few years to come. Thank goodness for the children being around, they are an invaluable help to us. Hope you are OK? ❤️
I am so happy for you it will all be worthwhile ❤❤❤❤
Aww thank you. ❤️.
No cockerel to start with imo ...make sure nothing can dig under the omlet ...foxes are known for it . ...Toby u will love it there . Good job kn all of ur work in the last week 💪
We have it well battened down with a mesh skirt etc. Going to be a battle keeping the predators away.
@@theirishhomestead U had storm Isha then came Jocelyn we got battered more with her than they said we would 😬 but hey we are still alive ...we had about a week of really hard ground my horses hated it so did I now we are back to swamp again ...when will we get some decent weather ? Keep safe 😊
@jacksg1809 thanks, it was an intense few weeks, freezing temps then 2 storms back to back. Think we all need a break from mother nature don't we. 😫
We just love watching your show from here in Seattle. My husband’s a contractor so we appreciate how smart you work. We lived on a Colorado ranch for many years and can sympathize with broken water lines and all the other ongoing forces of nature seeming to work against you. But you’ve got the right determination to stick it out! The place is looking so good!
(Regarding the rooster we vote NO! Let the girls live in peace. lol. Unless you want meat and not just eggs)❤
Thank you, that's so lovely to hear. Yes it's a real pain is the a** at times when it feels all we do is clear up after another problem thrown at us by mother nature! We keep on going though regardless as we have our dream in sight and we couldn't give up on it now. Thanks for the advice re the cockerel too. 👍
Great work! It's fun, from afar, to watch the homestead come together. And until today, I didn't know that kittens could type.
Glad you enjoyed it! They are utterly bonkers! Typing! Never thought of that 🤣
The logs would be great seats on the garden
Good idea, thanks.
I’m excited for the chickens! I love your channel ❤
Yay! Thank you! Us too.
all the non wood burner scraps will make for incredible compost
Ahh yes the compost is filling up nicely. Thanks.
Love watching your journey with your lovely on your farm very interesting watching what you are progressing each week
So nice of you, glad you're enjoying the videos. Thanks.
That's kool getting sponsored i know someone giving away a rooster could be a bit far for you thats awesome Hen house earth restoring naturally all the best
Thank you, we know of someone who will give us one if and when we are ready. 👍
@@theirishhomestead this one is in Donegal if it needs a buddy its all yours 👍
Rooster freeto good home
Hi Becky and Sam, definitely need a Cockerell, if nothing else, just for the alarm 😂😂
Ha ha yes I think Sam needs it these days! 🤣
Fresh eggs! You can't get better, especially with some freshly baked soda bread. I miss being able to go up to my parents place and just fetch them fresh from the hen shed. So, where are the ducks and geese going to live? Then there's got to be somewhere for the little goats....Becca....alpacas!!!!! Do it, do it, do it. 😆😆
Ha ha not sure we have enough space sadly. If only I'd definitely have goats & alpacas! Would love to have more land!
Morning guys 😊 What a lovely video diary you’re making 👍🏻 I’m catching up as I think what you’re both doing is fantastic 🤩😘 xx
Thanks so much for the support! 😊 I'm glad you're enjoying watching.
The chicken coop looks amazing! I have just moved to a rental home on a property that has chickens. I am looking forward to watching them in the spring. I am so glad to hear Toby is coming to your homestead soon as well. He deserves a loving family to care for him.❤
Thank you, we are so excited to have chickens. Toby is still coming but not as quickly as we had hoped. Lots more to plan for him, including permits.
That it Sam always thinks positively about what is going on with the building it will take time but at the end it will be worth it doing well cous
It so will! Thanks Neil. 👍
Awww amazing that you will have chickens next time and great on the news on the plan thing dont doubt your self we no you can do it when the time comes grand vlog thanks for having us along luv from the oldies (Ann and David ) xxxx
Thanks so much Ann & David. We will try to stay strong & positive. ❤️🤞 I suspect many more wobbles will come along over the course of this renovation but I have faith in Sam x
Good chicken coup. Would be good to get that roof on. Free eggs are always a good thing. Also looks like you have a good start on fire wood from the fallen trees!!!! Very good. If you are going to have a outdoor firepit, you could make to stumps and put piece of wood on them to make benches to sit around a fire pit. Love all that you have done so far!!!. Best.
Thanks. We would love an outdoor firepit. Hoping the weather will warm up a bit soon for sitting out. We get amazing skies here.
The coop is great and they seem quite happy in there. They spend far too much time on our decking, though! 🤣
I'd say anchor the chichen Coop. The wind would take it.
Well done on all that hard work
Don't worry it is well weighted down in its new location. We will show everyone next week. 👍
Defo get a Cockerell. He will keep your girls happy. You might be able to buy a "trio" Cockerell and two hens. I should watch the whole film before I comment 😅😅
Seems at the poultry fair they only want to sell the smaller breeds as a pair. 🙄
glad you survived the storms - I was actually thinking of you during it. We are in Donegal, so it was pretty bad. Glad you got another round of paperwork done for your renovation - must be such a relief as each step gets checked off.
Thanks for thinking of us, it was really bad wasn't it! Bet you got it worse over there. 🫣
Chickens need way more space to be happy! I do hope they are going to get free range of your land daily, and the coop is just for protection overnight from foxes and egg laying.
Oh 100% they will be free ranging but it's just somewhere safe they can go at night or if we are away from the homestead for longer periods.
About the cockerel, it depends on whether you want eggs are not.
He's here as you probably know by now.
We had chickens and always a rooster to about 8...10 hens. We also handled our poultry a lot (made pets of them) even the roosters. Then if one gets hurt and needs to be handled, they don't stress - and we reckoned they were happier as pets than livestock. I can't quite tell from the screenshot but it looks as though all your trees are coated in ivy vines. My advice is to get rid of the vines asap - they destroy the health of the tree.
Thanks for the information. Great advice. I did spend a few days back in the autumn cutting the ivy at the base of all the trees. I think it takes a while to die and fall off sadly. 😒
We live in Malaga inland, my chickens roamed the total land then took themselves back into coop at dusk, the cockerel watched there everymove...
Thanks, we hear the cockerel is a good guardian. 👍
Just think how money you will save next winter on wood for fuel!
There is always that silver lining I suppose. 👍
Please build a home for Toby next please ❤
It's definitely on its way. 🤣
Put the coop near the house with a wind break so protect the chickens from the predators and cold winds. Predators will stay away From the house more because they smell humans.they will dig under the wire to get the birds.maybe put on the stones instead of the grass.
Don't worry it is well weighted down with a mesh skirt in its new location. We will show everyone next week. 👍
Ok I was wrong I thought Donk had arrived. Cover the small area where your food and water are, if you get bird flu that needs to be covered by regulations. For a Cockrill you need to go to an see the father, rather than just buy one. Is the father a loud frequent crower is the father a pain in the butt when you go in and attack's you is it a nice Cockrill to the hens,. how the father is will be whether the Cockrill lives or goes to freezer camp. Not sure if you you watch them but English Country life has really good advice on chickens. Looking forward to seeing the chooks next time
Ahh if only it was Toby coming, hopefully soon. Interesting to read all about people's experiences with keeping hens & cockerels. So much to think about. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we really appreciate it. ❤️
Water main should be buried at least 18 inches in the ground and insulated. That particular bend may not be getting the same amount of sunlight after freezing.
During hard freezes leave the tap running slowly
Yes perhaps it just freezes harder there than anywhere else. Hopefully we will be connected to the mains soon and that of course will be buried. Thanks 👍
Yep, I was going to say almost the same thing. I am still getting caught up on your videos after discovering them a couple of weeks ago.
So we are in Texas near the Gulf so we don't get many hard freezes nor do they last long. But if you haven't already corrected the hose problem then when you know there is going to be a freeze you can shut the water off and empty the hose. We just built an 800 sq ft cabin that is up off the ground so we designed the water pipes running underneath to be able to blow the water out of them before a freeze occurs. The leaving water dripping doesn't work for hard freezes.
I absolutely loved having a Cockerell. They are so protective over their ladies. It will be a great education for the children to watch how he takes care of and rules the roost. ❤
Thanks, so many people for & against. I feel more confused now than before 🤣❤️
the small tin i would make raised garden beds from, why waste them?
big storms can be scary
your water pipe could be old, they start splitting when they get some age to them & it's out in the elements
love the chook pen, hope it stays put in the winds you get there, though not sure how strong that mesh wire is, hope it's predator proof; chooks can be great fun & fresh eggs are totally worth it, grow chook gardens too to give them extra greens NO COCKERAL to start with, see how you go with a few hens first, roosters need about 10 hens
thanx for sharing
Thanks for the advice. We are keeping as much of the good tin as possible for sure.
I think personally the frost must get it hard in that spot and maybe thatt's why. The Omlet coop is brilliant and thick wire, it goes down into a skirt which is pegged down bu heavy boulders. We will show everyone next week.
I think we will keep the ladies single for a while. 👍
Defo a cockerel, hel look after his ladies.. we had silkie chickens, gorg friendly birds
Ahh, my daughter is desperate for Silkies! We will get some one day.
Greatly enjoy your weekly videos. Look forward to Toby coming home. You all take care and best of luck gor the future to come. A big hello from Tennessee in USA.
Thank you! I'm so excited but a bit nervous about Toby, it will certainly be an adventure. 🤣
Predators will dig under that structure, you need to dig down and secure it under the ground ❤
It has a wire skirt all around which we have pegged down and put heavy stones all around it. Hopefully that will delay them at least.
Great chicken house, looking forward to seeing which chickens you get. Hoping to do the same when we get a chance 🙂
Thanks folks. Looking forward to seeing your place more completed. Love watching. 👍
I have seen people use the portable pen and it’s effective…….great for the grass
They are good.
The answer to your question do you need a Rooster, yes you do because with a rooster you tend to get more eggs from the hens and also you can get chicks which in the long run will increase your chickens and so more eggs.
Good job you said that as we did get a rooster! 🤣
Leaks are due to frost causing water in the pipe to freeze, expand and bust the pipe. As you probably know by now
It's weird though as it only happens on that bit of pipe and it's continuing after the frosts have gone. I think it was a dodgy piece of pipe.
great progress this week well done
Thanks so much. ❤️
If those trees were planted at the same time, there is a good change that they all are going to be falling one at the time (old age). Perhaps it would be safer to just plant new ones. If you would plant (pollard) willow (you can put a stick of willow in the ground and it will grow !), around the field, that would help a lot to keep the grounds drier. In Belgium farmers use to have them for that purpose. Beautiful trees, easy to maintain!), and a heaven for wildlife (great shade in summer). And you can sell the young branches to garden centers, flower shops, or basked weavers (ore make them yourselves) ore to make woven fences... They can give you an extra income!
We have put some of the branches in the ground. I'm hoping they do take as it's my first go at this.
We have some new trees coming soon bit will watch the existing ones this summer, mark the ones dead/dying for removing next winter. Thank you ❤️👍
@@theirishhomestead the only way they normally would not take, would be if the ground is to dry, but I don't think that has been a problem . 😀 Fingers crossed, but they should be fine I think.
Hello. So wonderful to see you all each weekend. Your property is beginning to look good. Good news you got the paper for your house. Great Job building the chicken coop. My vote is for the rooster. We all need a morning wake up caller. Remember everything will get done, so slow and steady to win your dream. Stay safe and well and See you next weekend.❤
Thank you. We do love a wake up call that isn't the standard mobile phone alarm sound don't we? ❤️❤️
Good morning. How are you 2 doing. Storms have been terrible in many places. Stay safe
They have! It feels relentless at the moment. We are doing ok though, thanks for asking. ❤️
Fox will be under that in no time. DIG down about a foot all round and put some stainless mesh in.
There is a mesh skirt which Sam has put big rocks on top of all the way round. It's next to our caravan and we have night cameras. They will be in the coop nice and safe at night not in the run.
Well done on the chicken coop. You definitely need to take steps to fortify the coop against foxes and other scavengers. And my vote- definitely for the cockerel.
Thanks so much. Don't worry it is well weighted down with large stones on top of the wire skirting. Hopefully its enough to keep the foxes & pine martins at bay. 🤞 will show everyone next week. 👍
Absolutely get a cocker make sure he’s a good lover though some are very aggressive
If you choose the right one you’ll benefit with great chicks & that is something that you will all enjoy
One point though let your hens free range yes you might lose some to predators & more reason for a good mannered cocker
Thanks, I definitely want them free ranging but have somewhere secure if we are not around for a while. Hopefully we get it right, seems like there is a lot to learn 🧐
If you watch Portugal it is, they have a beautiful rooster and he is an amazing guardian for their hens, just one.
Thanks, we have heard they are good guardians. 👍
You had quite an uncommon winter so far, in the 24 years here in Ireland (Bantry Bay) I never saw so many storms in (almost) a row, Isha was one of the stronger ones. So better peg the coop thoroughly to the ground. Maybe the ivy around those trees should come down, it’s unnecessary weight and resistance on the otherwise bare trees when storms hit.
Yes it's been a funny old year weather wise.
Don't worry re the coop ,it is well weighted down in its new location. We will show everyone next week. I did spend a few days back in the autumn cutting the ivy at the base of all the trees. I think it takes a while to die and fall off sadly. 😒
Cut the ivy out off the existing tree that are still there they will have less wind resistance and more likely the stay upright and last.
Thanks, I did spend a few days back in the autumn cutting the ivy at the base of all the trees. I think it takes a while to die and fall off sadly. 😒
Thank you for another great video, all the best from Calgary Canada
Our pleasure! ♥️
Good on you for staying positive!!!
Always! ❤️
You have worked really hard on the fallen trees. They will keep you warm next winter😊
I think so too! 🤞👍
The coop looks great! Good luck with not brining anything other than chicks home!!!
When we got our dog, Monty, nearly 11 years ago, our eldest had just been accepted into uni and had her first terms of grant money eagerly sitting in her account and was all for getting Monty’s brother and worrying about how she was going to manage life at a later date😂 needless to say, Monty’s brother went to another home and she carried on at uni! Have a great weekend! Laura ❤🐶🐰🐥🪿🦆🐷🐮
Ha ha, sounds like she made a wise choice, or maybe was guided into a wise choice? 😉 Sam will rein me in no doubt! I'll be worse than the kids! I would love a farm full of animals if time and money were no concern! I am definitely a liability to take to a small animal fair! 🤣
It’s all beginning to happen guys. You are doing astounding work on the farm. Bloody shame about the storms, they really have been bad.looking forward to seeing your chickens and the. Little Toby will join your family and life will be good. ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks Deirdre, fingers crossed it is all starting to take shape. ♥️🍀🤞
place is looking good
Aww, thank you.
Loved the kitty play
They are so fun to have around.
I had the very same issue with a brand new roll of 1/2 heavy gauge pipe I got, after 3 months it started splitting everywhere, thankful it wasn’t buried at the time. I lifted the entire thing after numerous joiners and brought it back, it was a faulty batch. I’d advise you to do the same as it will never stop bursting otherwise. Best of luck with everything. 👍
Thanks, that's really interesting! Good job it wasn't buried isn't it? We agree that it is faulty as nowhere else is this happening, and it was an extra section we added at a later date.
Getting really tidy now! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It's starting to take shape, isn't it. So excited to get the renovations started.
Look forward to your reels each week .My daughter had chickens and she would keep a few wood rings in the run .Every few days she would move them and all the slugs and worms would be under them ready to eat. 😊Have you considered putting drainage pipes across the fields to take the water away ? Lindy from New Zealand
Thanks so much for that, it's a good idea. Yes as soon as we can we hope to put so e land drainage in. 🤞👍
Pine Martins can be a problem and they can dig under. I'd bury some CGI and cover it with a thin layer of soil, bend the edges of the CGI upwards and connect it to the chicken coup thus gauranteeing no entry. We had a local tell us about Pine Martins and we have identified their 'Scatt' in one of our outbuildings. Also the water pipe must have been broken by the frost? The wind/chill factor might have been sufficient enough to break in 3 places close together?
Don't worry it is well weighted down in its new location and the Omlet coops have a wire skirting. We will show everyone properly next week. 👍
As for the pipe leaks . Could be mice . They love to chew insulation and such . Stop spoiling them kitties and get them to work ❤
Ha we love them too much. To be fair they have brought us a few presents so fingers crossed they are still working keeping my sofas safe in the barn.
❤the cats playing at the end, nice work done👏👏👏
Thank you! 😊 Glad you enjoyed it.
That is a neat set up for chickens.
I agree. 👍
another great video ,wish u made e daily xx
Thank you, daily may be a bit much for us 🤣❤️
The only reason you need a rooster/cockerel is if you want chicks from your own hens. Otherwise just enjoy the hens and their eggs. Is the pipe splitting or is something chewing through it? If it's just splitting in that section then I would cut out that section entirely and replace it with a new piece since it could be a manufacturing defect. If an animal is chewing it then I would put something nasty tasting (not poisonous) or spicy on the pipe to discourage chewing. These are common problems with exposed pipe unfortunately not to mention freeze/thaw problems.
Yes we think it's a faulty piece of pipe. Ot does the happen anywhere else on the line of pipe which stretches hundreds of metres all above ground. No teeth marks to see either.
It’s all coming together slowly. 👍
It is thank you. 👍
its the IVE THAT KILL THE TREES IN TIME
Thanks, I did spend a few days back in the autumn cutting the ivy at the base of all the trees. I think it takes a while to die and fall off sadly. 😒
Love the chicken hutch and pen Foxes will dig to get under the run so make sure its secure seen it happen on other sites looking forward to seeing the chickens and Donkey then it will be your lovely little farm so happy for you both
Thanks Patricia, luckily the Omlet has wire skirting all around, hopefully that will be enough. We have also weighed the skirt down with big rocks all the way around. Fingers crossed we keep them safe. X
I’m from British Columbia Canada.I absolutely love what you are doing there
Aww thank you, much appreciated. ♥️
That is one of the nicest chicken coops I’ve seen. Well wear.😊❤
We agree! It's brilliant. 👍
The cover is not just for rain. It helps with the prevention of bird flu contamination.
