      +Ryan Shaffer For an event that happened in 2009, if not earlier, why would karma hit in the one season A-rod COULDN'T play in. (He was suspended for the entirety of 2014, AKA when this video took place.)

    That's a dirty and dangerous play. It's clear he was targeting the 3B, and had no intention of tagging the base.

    If I were Girardi, I'd ask the umpire to lay down where the guy slid and ask him if he can reach the bag from there. Case closed.

    I remember this play. He wasn't even close to being able to touch the bag. No gray area in sight. It's a text-book example of interference. It was so flagrant, I don't understand how it went unnoticed.

      Couldn't think of a good name so i guess this is it I just learned recently that's the ruling on taking out a fielder, that the runner has to be able to touch the bag. It's clear he wouldn't have been able to. This should be a reviewable call. Why is this less of an umpire judgment than a call at 1st base, or a homerun? I don't get that.

    • @dangerouswheelco433

    I'm an Orioles fan, but how the duck was interference not called there? I... there's literally no good reason why interference wouldn't be called. Pearce was 4 feet outside the base and pointed his legs into the fielder's ankle. Also, he didn't even attempt to reach out to third. I feel like that kind of move is suspend-able.

    • @lm_Cray

      this is one reason why they changed the slide rule after two players, including tejada almost had career ending injuries due to dirty slides. there are hard slides and there are dirty slides. this one was right up there with utley. i say if they break a rule like that and the player gets injured, they should end their season right there. zero tolerance.

    *So basically after the umpires got together and still got the call wrong, they dismissed Girardi's argument, and also apparently told Showalter some version of, "Look... we got it wrong, but don't push your luck. Jones only advances to 3rd." I state this because if the umpires stood by their bad call fully, Jones should've been awarded home based on the throw going into the stands, according to the rule. So they got it wrong, and instead of fully correcting the situation OR continuing on the same wrong tangent, they just made up their own rule on the spot. Classic.*

    • @jumperguy9867
      @jumperguy9867 8 лет назад +1

      Just a little bit of information for you. The baseline is the line between bases. The four baselines make a perfect 90' x 90' square. Runners are allowed to go outside the baselines all the time.
      I think what YOU mean is that runners are generally not allowed to go outside the base PATH - which is defined as the direct route between a runner and the next base.
      With that said, the base path/base line argument is irrelevant here. The runner clearly interfered with the throw and he did it deliberately. He was already out, so that out stands.
      The umpire screwed up here. This was very clearly interference. Thee are FOUR umpires in major league games. It is inexplicable how the 3rd base umpire could have POSSIBLY missed this. He has ONE job!! And he wasn't doing it.

      MLB Rule 7.08
      Any runner is out when-
      (a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his base path to avoid being tagged
      unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner’s base path is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely
      (b) He intentionally interferes with a thrown ball; or hinders a fielder attempting to
      make a play on a batted ball;
      Rule 7.08(b) Comment: A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not.
      If the umpire declares the hindrance intentional, the following penalty shall apply: With less than two out, the umpire shall declare both the runner and batter out. With two out, the umpire shall declare the batter out.

    Gotta love how the MLB is dealing with all these collision rules. It seems to me that the more obvious the base runners intent to collide, the less likely the umps are to call interference. The only time it’s called is when both the fielder and the runner had every right to collide. I just don’t understand what the umpires are thinking about when they make these calls. The rules aren’t badly written, they’re just terribly enforced.

      Martin Gardner if you're any distance at all away from being able to touch the bag, with your toes up, and no attempt is being made at reaching for the bag you're sliding way far away from, then it definitely is a dirty play. Not only is it interference, that kind of a move could have cost Johnson a long trip to the DL and Pearce a long suspension. Or should have, at any rate.

    • @renardmigrant
      @renardmigrant 8 лет назад

      exarkunrocks I think he just got a little further from the bag than he intended to. You don't have to attempt to touch the bag, it's not in the rules.
      7.09 (d) says "Comment: If the batter or a runner continues to advance after he has been put out, he shall not by that act alone be considered as confusing, hindering or impeding the fielders."
      Barring any evidence to the contrary, he didn't intend to go out of the base path, he just ended up there.

    This is an example of poor umpiring. The slide mark is plain as day and Girardi even points it out and the umpires look directly at it and they completely ignore it. You have evidence of where the baserunner was and can see that he was completely out of the basepath.

    If you want to breakup the double play, please breakup it in any part of your area can touch the base bag. If you can't touch the base bag in any part of your area, and breakup the double play also slide to the defender, that's call "murder".

    What they should have done is eject the slider, and let the runners be on 1st and second, the slider interfered with the play so it shouldn't be called as a double.

  • @nicholasbutler153
    @nicholasbutler153 5 лет назад

    At first look is appears to be blatant interference, but there is one thing that could work in Pearce's favour.
    When Pearce starts moving to his left, Johnson has one foot on the base and the other behind it. So Pearce may have thought that Johnson was going to throw while he was on the base without making too much more movement, and moved to his left to avoid hitting Johnson, as Johnson was on the base. But this didn't work because Johnson then overran the base, and they collided anyway. Maybe that doesn't change anything, but it could.

  • @jdtractorman7445
    @jdtractorman7445 5 лет назад

    This should have been ruled a double play with one runner being at 2nd base. How they don't call this a double play I'll never know. Ironically, there are rules in place now where he would have been called out, but he should have been called out anyways because there is no way the runner can touch that base.

    I dont understand Pearce's logic here. Top 8, up by 3 runs. If he doesn't interfere there are 2 outs with a guy on second with an opportunity to score. If it were a 1 run game i could see trying to make Johnson mess up, but blatantly going out of his way to get him to mess up is beyond me. And shame on the second base umpire at :53. he has a clear line seeing Pearce going out of the baseline to interfere with Johnson.

    the runner look like he impacted the throw ,but it might been a case where he was trying to get out the way when he started sliding the 3rd baseman was on the bag :44 i'm not sure how much direction control Pearce may have what Pearce could you assume what a fielder gonna do or where he is i kinda think it might be accidental what call should have been is running is out on the force and runners on 1st and 2ed.

    I would've protested the game after a fiasco call like that. Umpires need to be held accountable for calls like these. I'm not a Yankee fan, but that's retarded. I don't mind a takeout slide if he's going for the base, but if he's going out of his way to hit a player, that shit should be dealt a fine as well as ejection and suspension.

  • @Kartracer6
    @Kartracer6 8 лет назад

    From a neutral point of view I can see the issue in this. The guy running to third looks like he was sliding wide and going to reach out with his hand to the base in an attempt to avoid colliding with the 3rd base man but didn't expect the baseman to overrun 3rd while throwing.

    • @Kartracer6
      @Kartracer6 8 лет назад

      Yes he could have easily touched 3rd from his initial course. It doesn't appear he starts moving farther away from the base until he realizes he's going to make contact with the third baseman who kept running past the base.

  • @44hawk28

    I want to know what kind of drugs these umpires are taking. They've got to be really good ones. They were concerned over where the runner sled. The runner was already out. Therefore, any contact with the Fielder was interference.
