My memories of Bill Evans are a bit different than most. I was sitting down to dinner with my family when the phone rang -- it was the stage manager at a local university where Bill Evens was performing. That night. But he was refusing to play the piano since it was so badly out of tune. Would I please bail them out and come to their auditorium and tune their piano. Well, for Bill Evans? Of course! I got to the auditorium close to 7:00 pm; Bill was scheduled to start at 7:30 and the hall was filled with college students who had obviously been prepping for this event for some time. The piano, of course, was on stage. I went to work to a chorus of 'boos' and 'catcalls' from the audience. After a few minutes of this Bill Evens came on stage and got them quieted down. "Look, I'm not playing this piano till it's tuned. And my man, here, needs it to be quiet or we'll be here all night." You could have heard the proverbial pin drop. I tuned the piano and, as I was packing up my tools, I got a standing ovation. (Gratitude, I think, I was finally done!) Bill and his trio came on and, as usual, was incredible.
My father was a huge Bill Evans fan. We played it non-stop while he was in the hospital and in hospice. Evans and my mother guided him as he passed away. I love this selection so much. Thank you.
My mother also listened to Bill Evans as she was dying. It's bittersweet for me now, but I still love to listen and remember. He definitely helped her move through the dying.
@@charlottenorris8855 That's beautiful, and what a coincidence. My mom and your dad must've been kindred spirits. It's bittersweet for me as well though I love listening to his music. Peace :)
RITE ON ..."Life is a one-way ticket - ain t no 2nd x aroun .." by Cousin Joe of Nawliiinz ..= far from the sophistication, but just as true or even truer. Evans was a genius and a junkie - CJ just a barroom pianist. 🇫🇮
53 years ago I went to my first jazz performance as a young aspiring jazz player. Bill was playing in Denver at Marvelous Marv's with Eddie Gomez and Marty Morrell. I got there early and sat at a table in front not ten feet from Bill as he played. There was never a word spoken between any of them, but the communication was undeniable between them. As I heard harmonies played differently than I'd ever heard, I had no idea what they were doing but was convinced that they were among the best in the world at this craft. Like so many others, I've been greatly influenced by Bill's music as I have grown as a player. On a side note, I performed with a pianist a few years ago who had once been a music critic for the Denver Post newspaper. He described his evening once with Bill in his hotel room at the Brown Palace hotel from which they watched the Grammy awards on TV as Bill received one. Bill was performing in Denver then and couldn't receive the honor himself. This same person, Tom MacCluskey later received a Grammy himself. Thank heaven for the great pianistas.
Walking down the street in San Francisco my wife and I and herd this wonderful sound coming out of one of the Clubs I had no clue who Bill Evans was but fell in love with his music have been a fan from that time on about 1961 .
Such a gifted pianist. I came across his music by chance when I was 13, borrowing an album from the library out of curiosity. 50 years later I am still amazed by his virtuosity.
Absolutely! Too bad Bill decided to fritter away with abusing the ETOH and nicotine drugs...sad, absolutely avoidable and unnecessary and needlessly painful...physically and emotionally. Thankfully, we have his recorded music!
My dad loved Danny Boy & He sang it beautifully & played it on His harmonica & He sang it like the Irish tenors- indeed he'd relish Evans's take here, that I know.
I am so old that I can remember hearing Bill Evans at Ronnie Scott's nightclub in 1968. So magical to see the great man and in such a famous London setting. Heard Waltz for Debbie there, never forget it.
Evans has just such a fantastic sense of the melody, my favourite tracks are those in which he represents the melody of the tune at the heart of the song. His touch is so lyrical and dynamic. Crystal.
Bill Evan's passing was deeply sad news. Sometimes it seems that Life just sucks up the best people with a hungry zest! 😢 Thank God for recordings so we can honor their lives.❤ DJ
The feather light touch of those floating sounds from the ivories is breathtakingly beautiful. It makes you soul searchingly vulnerable how this magic intimate music can affects you, folks. Utterly superb album, and for me one off Bill’s very best! Savour this gem to the fullest, aficionados. G’day & Cheers!
Bill is supreme. There may be equally talented and profoundly accomplished jazz pianists, but surely none better. For me, his music never palls -- after more than fifty years of listening.
Excelente selección. Muchas Gracias.
V here: God Bless You! What a great experience. I started listening to soft jazz at the age of 6 and as an artist myself because of my mom and uncle who adored jazz. I love Bill Evans. Recently I have been DEEP DIVING into his music and Oh my Lord!
I can't recall the song. Bill Evans playing and I can't recall which group either. What I do recall is @gillespeterson introducing the tune and speaking about the various artists involved. The craftsmanship and the art combine well in the heart and mind.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful music, Bill Evans is a joy and this is a wonderful selection. Right now I'm transitioning from Everything Happens to Me, to Young and Foolish......
Many years ago I listened to this trio and was hooked for life and since have collected all his works, especially the verve collection. I feel there will be no other like this man. I was sad at his under-recognized fame and tragic personal life issues. Surely he would still be with us today if not for the drugs that consume all users.
