Awesome video, my friend! As I like to say when things like your misfire happen, “You just can’t make this stuff up!”, but you got it all on video including a 75 hard track with no blood to boot. Great job to both of you and thank you for sharing the stories!
I had a miss fire on a sweet buck about mid season, came upon him right under my tree stand. that was the last I saw of him. I will never forget the sound of that click. and the things that run through your mind in a fraction of a second. Nice deer and just in the nick of time.
Congratulations to you and Eric on a couple of nice bucks! Crazy how hunting can take you to from feeling so low to the highest of highs in just moments!
The reason your gun didn’t go off the first time was because your bolt was up and not closed. The gun won’t fire with the bolt in the up position- definitely not a straight up misfire. Thankfully you got a second chance at him. Thanks for sharing this video as it’s a great video to share. Many people assume they miss if they cannot find blood and this is great proof that they don’t always bleed even with near perfect shots. Thankfully you had some snow and video to help confirm that you hit him. 100% certainty that he was hit with that reaction to the shot and how he was running off. Always put in the extra time to search. That happens more often than people think!! Congrats to you on a great buck!
Congrats to you and Eric, 2 more nice bucks in Maine. Misfires happen at the most important time of the hunt, it just happens that way. By the way you don`t pass on a buck like that with just 2 days to hunt. Unless you want to eat a tag sandwich, we don`t want that. You caught all the deer action to perfection, great self filming. Wishing both of you continued luck the rest of the season.
Congratulations to you and Eric on filling your tags. Way to keep on the track and find that buck most people would give up not seeing blood. I respect the hunter who doesn’t give up until the bitter end Happy Hollidays to you and family
Real nice buck. I’ve shot 5 deer with my 30-06 in the last 2 years and only one of them had a blood trail. Shot a doe last day of season but couldn’t find her with out any blood. It’s not a problem when they drop in sight or close by but no luck on the last one. It is a bit frustrating but that is hunting. Really glad it all worked out for you. You earned that one 1!
Heck of a nice buck, Congratulations! I was able to tag out on a 200+ pounder this year after 43 years of trying. It is on my A Maine "RUT" hunt video. I was also able to tag out on a doe with my purchased doe tag for zone 14 this year. That will be on the last days of my muzzleloader hunting video. Again congratulations to you and your son. You do great video work as well. Maine North Woods Hunter (Shane)

Nice! Happy for you and your son. I'm muzzle loading it now, didn't have much sign where I've been, but I moved to another area and it's looking better. Never give up right. Last week hunting here I come.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. If you watch the video on slow motion of the misfire you can see that the bolt of your rifle is not "in battery." It's not closed all the way. You're actually fortunate the rifle did not fire. Had it fired you may have experienced a catastrophic failure of the rifle. So glad for you that the buck came back and you got a second chance. Congrats.
congrats to both of you. that was a awesome video. to have a miss fire, and to have another chance at him, man that doesn't happen all the time. thanks for taking us along and sharing it with us. just found your channel and subscribed.

Great video!! You have a nice narration voice. I have had one misfire on my 50 cal Thompson black powder and it is gut wrenching. Glad you got a second chance at him.
Great experience and glad you have it on video, I enjoy watching and learning from hunters like you. This year I turned 50 and was my first time hunting, did not get to see any deer but just good size tracks. I continue reading books and watching videos, hoping one day a get to have the chance to experience the feeling of getting my first buck. Greetings from Wisconsin!
Wish you the best of luck. I've been hunting for 48 years and still read and watch all I can. Boots on the ground is very important. My favorite time to scout is just after the snow is gone and before the leaves come out. Thank you for watching.
Nice video! I hade a misfire in December here in Kansas I couldn't believe it , the buck I was shooting at head the lout snap and was 400 yards away before I knew what happened. It's allways a good adventure every time I hunt weather I'm successful or not.
It's an awful feeling when you put the time and effort in and when you finally get a shot things go wrong. Hope you get another chance at him in the future. Thanks for watching Kerry.
His reaction to the shot was a great indicator of the hit. Also the way he was running off after made it pretty clear. Their tail isn’t always tucked when they run off, but often is.
Congrats to both of you! I live and hunt in eastern Maine, and the same thing happened to me on the 16th. I hit a big 8 pt., I knew I'd hit him, but no blood. He went close to 100 yds, and the only blood was about 6 ft. from where he piled up.Even though I knew I hit him, a lot of bad things went through my head, LOL. He ended up dressing out at 202. My third patch buck on my 50th anniversary of deer hunting, pretty damn special! It just proves that you gotta keep looking and looking. Great job to both of you, way to get it done!
Got a friend in Ok that has watched a deer grow for the last 5 years. Somehow the deer has one hind leg that has been damaged. They call him Limpy Kimpy. They have spent at least 40 hours watching deer waiting for Limpy Kimpy. He has showed up several times but doesn't ever give them a good shoot. Haven't heard the last two days of hunting season! Hope they got there shoot at him.
Nice job! You are the kind of man I root for. What a great video and even better perseverance on your part! You deserved that buck sir. Good luck next season too.
More than anything, I should be using a bigger caliber. .243 does not make much of a hole. Top of the heart was gone but all the blood was in the chest. Thanks for watching.
I love your patience......my son said to me one time "I can't wait to learn patience..." I am working on a woods food plot so that they might learn that patience. I am curious as to what the bullet was in that .243?
Thank you Todd. I was using 100 grain Remington core lokt. Watched the hit in slow mo, the front leg was back and the bullet just clipped the edge of the shoulder. That's why there was no exit hole.
Not a drop of blood with a kill shot. This happened to me in Maine when I took a six pointer. There were a few hints of blood on blades of grass in the power lines and that was all. The deer was only 50 yds from where it was hit. Hey, love this video, it was a real down to Earth hunt. Thanks for posting it.
Nice buck I didn't have any blood this year on my buck either. Also shooting a .243 and this isn't the first time ive had weak blood trials with that caliber. Kills them great though just not a very big hole i guess. Especially when they are running fast doesn't leak much.
@@PineStateHunter what part of ME are you hunting, watching more of your past videos there are nice bucks in region. Good deer activity in the Bog region too
Hey, Crowley. Congratulations to you AND Eric for harvesting good bucks before time ran out on us here in Maine. I passed on a smallish six-pointer in my field, and nothing big ever showed up. Are you by any chance using the breed of rifle cartridges that have a plastic insert in the tip of the bullet? I've read the on-line entries of several hunters who have had expansion and blood-trail problems with such ammo (though plenty of other people think these bullets perform just fine). I just thought I'd mention it. Ditto your misfire problem. Many years ago, when I had this issue with my Remington 600 .308 carbine, I assumed it was the ammo. But just for the heck of it, I asked a gunsmith to check the firing pin. Sure enough, he said there was just enough wear to cause an occasional misfire. Stay warm this winter! Chris
Hey Chris thanks, Not using the plastic tips. The gun is a .243 and I just clipped the back of the shoulder. Took the top of the heart off but with no exit hole and a small entrance no blood. If you are still hunting I hope you find a good one.
That's why I always shoot the AR platform. It never fails, and I can field strip, trouble shoot, re-assemble, and function check it in the pitch black. Only accidental discharge I've ever had was a Remington 710 that would fire upon releasing the safety. I hunt deer with a .308 and a .300blk depending on terrain.
@@PineStateHunter I determined, if safety was engaged and trigger was touched, even just from some brush...then switch the safety off and it fired. I quickly sold it to a gun dealer after telling him of it's fault. He said that was common with the 710. First and last Remington I ever bought.
Wow very nice sir congratulations persistent paid off when it's your time it's your time weather the first day or the the last day of the hunt Ray stein
More an my wife wanted me to. Most of Oct. and Nov. Probably 50 or so days. Morning and evenings. Could have tagged out many times but was looking for a nice one. One of these days I'll get the monster I'm looking for.
What kind of gun do you have. ? It looks like mine that miss fire on the same buck twice. I thought ammo problem, so I fired the shell at end of hunt. So then I thought must be me not closing the bolt all the way. When it happened the 2nd time on that 8 pointer I knew it’s the gun. Gun is a Howa in 308. Japanese made rifle
It's a Rem. 243. I'll do some more shooting with it at the range but am sure the bolt was not locked down. Sorry you didn't get your buck Joseph, nothing worse than hearing a click when a nice buck finally comes in.
@@PineStateHunter I didn’t get him the first time, and boy did that really mess with me. But the second time, even though it miss fired again I was quick to eject and fire. I got him, thanks be to the Lord , right through the liver. If I hadn’t got him I’m afraid that gun would have been wrapped around a tree. Lol. Anyway we have a range at the camp and season just ended so I got another box of ammunition and fired 8 shells through without a problem. First time I’ve ever had a miss fire with rifle ammunition in 40 years. Maybe the quality is not there like it used to be or maybe ammunition up our way was hard to get during Covid period so I’m thinking maybe quality wasn’t there because the workers may have been out. New rifle and first kill with it so it ended well
@@lukest.pierre3568 I trouble shot everything in my mind that day that could possibly have happened. The bolt and ammo were all I could guess. I was fortunate the buck had one thing on his mind and came back through with a doe , which gave me another opportunity. Otherwise that would have bothered me to no end.
I had a misfire once on a buck that was charging me after using a grunt call. I’d seen the buck move into the swamp. I slipped on the snow and fell going down over the bank into the swamp and didn’t realize the bolt was jarred up when I hit. I grunted, waited a bit and grunted again waited and the third time I heard crashing to my left, turned to look and there he was running at me with his head down. I remember my jaw dropping open and then thinking I better shoot ! I took aim and “click”. Pulled the trigger again and “click” again. At that point he realized it was me and turned and ran about 70 yards away and stopped and all I could see was his neck. I chambered another shell and aimed at his neck, shot 3 times and missed before he ran off for good. I couldn’t believe what had happened. I decided I’d better check the scope before doing anymore hunting and sure enough it also had been knocked off when I fell. Now I look back on it and laugh and say “good for him !”
2 questions I’ve noticed no videos of your son hunting this year, second question did you guys give it up on the big pine overlooking the swail grass spot?
Didn't have much time to film Eric hunting this year, (only have one camera set up). Eric shot his buck out of the big pine this year. I just wasn't there to get the kill on video. Hope you had a good season.
You really think he is 4 yrs old. I'm no good at aging deer but thought he would be younger because the hind quarters were smaller than the front shoulders.
Thank you, I was using a 243. Probably should be using something a little heavier. The snow can be fun when it's soft but last year that crust shut the food plot down. Thanks for watching.
This year I planted a summer soil builder mix, (the sorghum was the only thing that survived the heavy browse pressure.) Also planted clover and rye which held up ok. The plot was all wooded. Cleared by hand with just hand tools. Lots of work but it was worth it. Happy holidays.
Sorghum or Japanese millet may work better if you could plant it separately on the side with less moisture. The deer will leave it alone until those seed heads ripen. If you can get it separately I’d try planting buckwheat along there after your last frost. Just top seed right before a rain. If that grows then spread your brassicas in it in mid late July and mow it. That’ll kill the buckwheat and give the brassicas moisture from the cuttings to get it started. know the hard work you’ve put in if you cleared and cut that by hand. I’ve been doing the same thing and it takes time to build the soil and get a good plot. Keep at it.
Congrats on your buck! What did he end up weighing? I shot my biggest racked buck in 2018, non-typical, made MASTC and the same thing; not a drop of blood from where I shot him to where he lay about 50+ yards away. And this was in nice deep fluffy snow so any blood would have shown up like a neon sign.
Didn't weigh it but would guess about 180lbs. Congrats on your Buck Richard. Been trying to break 150 for the last few years. It's tough to find a buck that will score above 140. One of these days it will happen.
@@PineStateHunter Mine was 166 2/8. Turned out to be the biggest NT Maine buck entered in the North East Big Buck Club that year. Big deer but he only weighed 170. You have a great set-up with your food plot and blind; you'll get a MASTC buck yet for sure!
Congratulations! What bullet weight were you using for that nice buck? I like to use 100 grain in my 6mm Remington. I’ve always had exit holes. Most of the time they are very big exit holes.
Congratulations on your kill. I’m not wanting to critique your hunting skills but why was your gun mounted on your back when you went down to check to see if you got him. I did that once years ago as a young hunter and when I got close to the deer it jumped up and took off. I still think about that mistake on my part to this day.
You have a point David, I've seen deer get up and go after a hard hit. That's one of the draw backs to self filming. You just can't be 100% focused on the hunt and film too. Thank you for watching and the critique.
I have shot a number of deer without leaving blood trails. Shooting center of the deer, as in height, all the blood stays inside. I shot a doe that ran 200 yards in an open field only to pile up at the edge. When dressed out, there were no lungs, only soup, and some clots.
Hey Crowley congratulations to you and Eric both ! The 243 would do that I'll kill several deer with my 243 no blood trail they bleed inside and fall dead. Last 2 years I've used my dad's old Remington 760 ,30-06 pump he left me when he passed away . I'd like my 243 but the 30-06 will put a hole in him ! I got a 7 point October 27th It was a special buck it was on my wife and I 43rd anniversary . Proud y'all have had a good year Congratulations again hope you guys all had a happy Thanksgiving and have a very Merry Christmas !🎄

Same thing happened to me last year. Gutted it out and all of the blood was in the lungs! She had drowned herself
Yea, small hole and all the blood stayed in the chest. Thanks.
great video how many days did you have sitting to harvest that deer
New rifle and first kill with it so it ended well
Joseph Vladyka- In this video the gun did not go off because the bolt was up so you’re right in thinking of that as a possibility.
Cool story Maxwell, thanks for sharing.
Beautiful 3.5 year old, what did he go 180 ish? Congratulations to both of you..👊
Thanks Danny, Yea, I'd guess he was about 180 too. One of these days I'm going to find one of those 5 or 6 year old deer.
@@PineStateHunter I had a good season so far, still after a doe. Keep up the great videos!!!!
Congrats! Nice 4 yr old!
You really think he is 4 yrs old. I'm no good at aging deer but thought he would be younger because the hind quarters were smaller than the front shoulders.
@@PineStateHunter maybe. I though his shoulders were same size as hind end but neck tipped him over in my mind. Definitely a nice deer
I really enjoy your videos. I wish we got snow during deer season here in SC !
? Are you shooting a 270 ?
Thank you, I was using a 243. Probably should be using something a little heavier. The snow can be fun when it's soft but last year that crust shut the food plot down. Thanks for watching.
Bolt was not down on your rifle.
Thanks Joe, I'm not going to let that happen again. Thanks for watching.
Same thing happened to me. Nice big fort Atkinson Wisconsin buck.
Nice bucks. Way to persevere. What do you have planted in the plot? Did you have originally create to the plot yourself ? Merry Christmas.
Keep at it.
@@nhmountains5683 Thanks for the tips and encouragement.
Your bolt looked like it wasn't down
It wasn't, I need to pay more attention. Thanks for watching Robert.
@@richardjulian9263 Can't put the weight on the wall. 166 is a wicked buck. Congrats again.
Congratulations! What bullet weight were you using for that nice buck? I like to use 100 grain in my 6mm Remington. I’ve always had exit holes. Most of the time they are very big exit holes.
100 grain rem core lokt. His front leg was back when I shot and the bullet nicked the front shoulder. Thanks for watching Robert.
I bet that Thanksgiving buck was better than 160 on the hoof
You got that right, thanks for watching.
Wasn’t a misfire. Your bolt wasn’t closed all the way. Which doesn’t allow the gun to fire. Watch your video you’ll see it 3/4 way up.
After continuing the video after commenting I see you pointed out the same thing I said.Nice buck and congrats!
Good eye Gene, wish I had noticed it when I picked the gun up. Thanks for watching.
Welcome to the misfire then connect club . I know your pain and happiness .
So stressful. Thanks for watching.
I have shot a number of deer without leaving blood trails. Shooting center of the deer, as in height, all the blood stays inside. I shot a doe that ran 200 yards in an open field only to pile up at the edge. When dressed out, there were no lungs, only soup, and some clots.
That's about the way the insides of this deer looked like. Thanks for watching Tim.
💫
Services for trail cameras,PLEASE check the email
Will do.
Some of the deer I have gotten jumped just like that.
That's the first time I've seen one jump that high. Hope you had a good deer season.
@@PineStateHunter yes. Ty. I got an 8. Pretty nice size, and real pretty rack.
I know what the problem was, left handed😂 nice buck
Us Lefties got it tough. Thanks for watching.
Congrats on your deer and Marry Christmas to you as well.
243 for ya.bullets blow up inside but they dont bleed.
Get a gun that you don’t have too reach across man.
great shots an nice bucks
Thanks, hope you had a good season John.
Glad you got him, where did you hit him?
The top of the heart. All the blood was in the chest cavity. No exit hole.
Bolt wasn't closed?
You can bet I'll be keeping an eye on that from now on. Thanks for watching.
Did you not hunt the bog this year?
I filmed for Eric down in the bog for a few days. The action was slow so I spent most of the season at the food plot. Eric killed his deer in the bog toward the end of the season. Thanks for watching.
Congrats!
Thank you.
