How To Make a Bokken - with Master Nidome Yoshiaki, Japanese Artisan

- The master craftsman Nidome Yoshiaki making a custom extra-long tanto designed by SeidoShop for Miyamoto Tsuruzo Shihan (Aikido) and now available as a standard product : www.seidoshop.com/products/ex...
While a lot of tools are used for this production (as it's now a regular Seido product that has its own set of settings at the workshop), the overall process still took about 3h (can be reduced to about 1.5 to 2h / piece when working on multiple pieces).
All custom bokken are fully handmade, which takes about 5 hours.
This video doesn't contain any subtitles/indication yet, but we'll work on it soon !

Thank God for power tools!!! The perfect combination of technology and centuries old craftsmanship... fascinating.
I see skill, patience, etiquette and a beautiful work of art!
I miss my days in the wood shop. We had all of those machines!
There is nothing like creating something out of wood with your hands!
This has inspired me to make my own. I have a nice piece of hickory that I'll be purchasing to use.
Just goes to show what an incredible bargain Seido weapons are. I had no idea so much work went into them.
+Paul Conway I'm wondering if the people who're commenting about how involved it is have ever actually worked with those types of tools. With as experienced the man is, and not to mention that nearly every one of his tools has a built in template or guide, it's almost mindlessly simple to replicate. Band saw, planer, electric router, drum sander, belt sander, hand planer and some sand paper; You could make damn near anything with all of these handy.
+Motegii then again, without the right dimensions, your DIY bokken wont be right
+Motegii The overall shape of the Bokken isn't that hard to make... Chinese made Bokken have quite a good shape as well.
No, what's more complicated is the wood selection, the initial cut (what part of the plank is good enough and how to cut it in the right direction depending on the fibers alignment), and finally the finish to have a surface as smooth as possible. If you take a Bokken from a young craftsmen that just started to learn, and one from master Nidome in your hand, even if made from the same piece of wood, you immediately feel the difference.
I would love to learn. @@seidobudostudies
Very interesting, lot of specialized one off tools and jigs.
Cheers
Thank you very much :)
A very fascinating video! Clearly a case where I "see" the Master at work but I do not SEE what he does. I am sure I do not comprehend even 1% of what was done!
the real disappointing part was not seeing the 'final product'
Amazing craftsmanship.
木刀を注文しました。柄を少し長めになどと無理も聞いて頂けて本当に満足。
忙しいそうで完成までには、ひと月半位掛かるらしいですが届くのが楽しみです。
I had no idea it was that involved. Cool video guys.
OSHA would have a field day in this shop.
Awesome, though I washopi g for the more traditional way - this wool have to do. Really I was worried about the drying process. Now I wonder how the sword will hold up in practice or even a actual fight. Thatnks for 98th video....
Well, I have to admit I haven't worked with wood for a couple of decades, and then to only a rudimentary level.
Do you know any artisians interester in white port orford ceder
Cleaner on brake or what?
Thanks for your Video , but i think that the name of the arm is a tanto , for her dimensions !! Thank you !!
+Pedro Jose Perello, of course it's a Tanto, it's in the description. Still, it's the same step for a Wakizashi or a Bokken.
Yes thank i suppose it !!! (Y)
03:26 can't see any issue
Whats for wood are you using?
Mainly Japanese oak, but in this video, it's Sunuke.

Quali contatti per acquistarne una con fodero? Grazie.

My works too. Used woodprix handbooks and build it with no problems.
Woodprix scam alert.
That’s a tanto not a bokken
Your sense of observation is astonishing, although it didn't go as far as the video description.
Of course it's a Tanto, it's in the description. Still, it's the same step for a Wakizashi or a Bokken.
