And, for the average buyer, that's true in some niches like food and fashion, even if the average italian product is of mediocre quality. Talk with the average Joe in North America (and also central Europe according to my experience) for example, and ask him if he would buy a bottle of olive oil made in Spain or made in Italy. I noticed that the majority would buy the italian oil, even if, generally speaking, is of lower quality (at least I think so) because people think about Italy as this mythical place where everyone dresses well and all the food is good. Those two things, fame and quality, don't necessarily go hand in hand and that's the case for the cheap italian foods that you find in the supermarket. What you said is more or less true, but you can't expect to have a serious conversation about a topic if the first comment of yours looks like that. That's not an opening to a more serious and well put discussion, that's just a rant. How'd you expect something serious after such a start? Even if you are saying the truth, which, more or less, you are, that sounded a lot like someone crying, hence the comment.

As an Italian software developer migrated abroad I can just say that in Italy if you are not coming from a wealthy family forget about it. Most of the highly young skilled people leave the country and for those who remain it's a struggle. We are among the lowest paid workers in Europe with an economic growth very close to 0%. Quality of life here is amazing yes, if you have the money :)
If Italians want to save their country they have to get out of the EU ASAP! Italy has been going down the drain these past 20 years thanks to the EU/Euro trap and corrupt politicians.

I saw “A Room With A View” as an early teen and the scenes of Florence were breathtaking. I knew I would love to go there. I’m so thankful I got to live in Florence for those three months. It was a delicious three month immersion in Italy. I spent a few days in Venice and loved it so. Recently I saw video of Venice and it broke my heart. On one of the bridges there was an Ethiopian on each steep trying to sell cheap things to tourists. They were everywhere. I don’t see how things could change so much in just 15 years.

I am Italian, I can say Italians have always been traditionalist. The gap we are paying now is that governments and industry never seriously invested in technology and research. actually i’m from *CENTER* (yes it exist) Italy and i want to explain things a little bit to foreigners... italy is actually divided in three not in two as a common belief: - *the north:* rich and industrialized part, clean where people are acculturated and they respect rules (northern italians share similarities with france or northern europe actually, in fact there is also a colder weather and the italian alps in border with austria and france and switzerland, the mentality is very similar and the richness in general) and the most two iconic cities are Milan (the most industrialized and rich city in Italy) and Venice, Turin, Genoa, Bologna - *the center:* not too different from the north in terms of richness and development and culture, but less industrialized and less organized and the people are more welcoming and warm and chatty, iconic cities like Rome (capital) and Florence are in the center, but also Sardinia. Us from the center are very neutral about this diaspora between north and south and i think we are the true italians here... also because we didn’t have many invasions by foreign civilizations during history because the center italy has always been under the Papal State (Vatican) for a lot, and still is, so it remained latin (roman, as romans were originated by latins and spoke latin) - *the south:* the most poor and undeveloped part, where mafia rules the most (and also where mafia is born) and that’s why many southern italians emigrate. You don’t see many emigration coming from center/north italians, and i explained why, and i have to add that it’s also the part where the ugliest dialects come from basically people are not well instructed in my opinion so they don’t put the effort to talk in standard italian and they prefer to use their dialects (the ones popular in mafia families for americans basically SUPERMARIO LOL) but again their dialects are ugly honestly... italian is a romance language, melodic and sweet is the language of music, opera...so it really sucks that there is (especially in USA) this stereotype that italians talk like supermario or like mafia bosses. This is true for the southern italians as i explained, in the center/north people talk standard italian and less dialects with a proper accent. If you hear standard italian is completely different from the dialects spoken in south of italy especially, and southern italians in general even when they talk standard italian they have (sorry) really bad accents😂But also i think the south is the most gorgeous and iconic part of Italy (Amalfi coast, Capri, Naples, Sicily, Positano, ecc) Us from the center as i said want truly a united Italy, but Italy is veeeery divided not only from north to center to south but also from region to region! The fact is that Italy unified very late on the contrary of other european countries, in 1861, and before it was divided in different regions who talked different dialects and had different cultures basically... a BIG MESS! Italy is my home, a gorgeous country full of history and culture and art, marvelous places, food and warm people.. so we have to unite from north to south! 🇮🇹🕊

I come from the same city as the guy who makes cheese, Grosseto in Tuscany. I am an engineer and was in London and now in Basel. They want to depict this romantic idea of the young guy leaving the big city for a more bucolic life, but the reality it's way different. If you don't come from an already rich family there is no chance to do what he did. This is not a critic towards him of course, it's just how things are.
Few small businesses in some niche semi-luxury markets in which "made in Italy" matters, such as custom designed shoes or organic cheese and so on, might or might not succeed, but that will never change the gigantic tectonics of globalized economy. like it or not, it can not.
Globalization also means huge markets, like China or India, which have millions of rich people who love luxury products made in Italy, this is why Italian exports enjoy excellent health.
You miss the point. Te whole economy is crumbling and these few small businesses, even if they would succed, can't change the fact the italian economy is not good at all nor the expectations of growth nor some serious and very difficult to fix problems like the old and fast-aging population. Even after 20 years of hardships, Italy is the second manufacturing powerhouse of Europe in industrial production and manufacturing and it is the 8th most powerful economy in the world (as per GDP- World Bank data). The country managed to create arguably the world's most recognizable brand (MADE IN ITALY) in just 40 years after losing a World War, becoming a hegemony in supercars, luxury clothing, shoes, fine wine and food, nano technology, Design, and more. The nation has almost 80% of its richness in physical (real/tangible) assets and has the lowest private debt of the entire Eurozone. All of this coupled with being the country with 75% of the Unesco World heritage....and ALL I hear is mandoline and complain about bureaucracy and public debt. YES, there are MANY problems to take care of, but please stop representing this country as if it were the weakest of all. With all the due respect it's appauling and disturbing to say the least. As they say you cannot have everything at once. You have Tuscany with a spectacular scenery and good weather (relatively), but you have to deal with the government you have and all of its bureaucracy. That basically is like throwing broken glass on the sidewalk as you walk barefoot. It's a slow and painful walk, but at least you're not in awful weather UK. Hope they're all very successful. I am Italian, I can say Italians have always been traditionalist. The gap we are paying now is that governments and industry never seriously invested in technology and research. We contented ourselves with.......... Made in Italy. France developed research in technology AND Made in France traditional products, and they are dealing much better with the economical crisis.

I live in Texas and that was my dream to take the land I owned and became an independent farmer like the brothers, I bought it with my girlfriend of ten years, 3 months before we were to pay off our loan of six year loan, we had to sell it when she got cancer, she was cured then she ran off with another man. For those that like history,Italia is new invented name.Younger than USA.Culture is different and language to in the south and North.Origins of the people too.Today Italy is under great pressure from rich industrialist and politician to adopt millions of cheap workers as former Rome did in-ancient times.Industry is transferred to China and millions of people are mowing to London.This guy was lucky that his mother was clever woman and organised all for him.
actually i’m from *CENTER* (yes it exist) Italy and i want to explain things a little bit to foreigners... italy is actually divided in three not in two as a common belief:
- *the north:* rich and industrialized part, clean where people are acculturated and they respect rules (northern italians share similarities with france or northern europe actually, in fact there is also a colder weather and the italian alps in border with austria and france and switzerland, the mentality is very similar and the richness in general) and the most two iconic cities are Milan (the most industrialized and rich city in Italy) and Venice, Turin, Genoa, Bologna
- *the center:* not too different from the north in terms of richness and development and culture, but less industrialized and less organized and the people are more welcoming and warm and chatty, iconic cities like Rome (capital) and Florence are in the center, but also Sardinia. Us from the center are very neutral about this diaspora between north and south and i think we are the true italians here... also because we didn’t have many invasions by foreign civilizations during history because the center italy has always been under the Papal State (Vatican) for a lot, and still is, so it remained latin (roman, as romans were originated by latins and spoke latin)
- *the south:* the most poor and undeveloped part, where mafia rules the most (and also where mafia is born) and that’s why many southern italians emigrate. You don’t see many emigration coming from center/north italians, and i explained why, and i have to add that it’s also the part where the ugliest dialects come from basically people are not well instructed in my opinion so they don’t put the effort to talk in standard italian and they prefer to use their dialects (the ones popular in mafia families for americans basically SUPERMARIO LOL) but again their dialects are ugly honestly... italian is a romance language, melodic and sweet is the language of music, opera...so it really sucks that there is (especially in USA) this stereotype that italians talk like supermario or like mafia bosses. This is true for the southern italians as i explained, in the center/north people talk standard italian and less dialects with a proper accent. If you hear standard italian is completely different from the dialects spoken in south of italy especially, and southern italians in general even when they talk standard italian they have (sorry) really bad accents😂But also i think the south is the most gorgeous and iconic part of Italy (Amalfi coast, Capri, Naples, Sicily, Positano, ecc)
Us from the center as i said want truly a united Italy, but Italy is veeeery divided not only from north to center to south but also from region to region! The fact is that Italy unified very late on the contrary of other european countries, in 1861, and before it was divided in different regions who talked different dialects and had different cultures basically... a BIG MESS! Italy is my home, a gorgeous country full of history and culture and art, marvelous places, food and warm people.. so we have to unite from north to south! 🇮🇹🕊

I come from the same city as the guy who makes cheese, Grosseto in Tuscany. I am an engineer and was in London and now in Basel. They want to depict this romantic idea of the young guy leaving the big city for a more bucolic life, but the reality it's way different. If you don't come from an already rich family there is no chance to do what he did. This is not a critic towards him of course, it's just how things are.

Globalization also means huge markets, like China or India, which have millions of rich people who love luxury products made in Italy, this is why Italian exports enjoy excellent health.
You miss the point. Te whole economy is crumbling and these few small businesses, even if they would succed, can't change the fact the italian economy is not good at all nor the expectations of growth nor some serious and very difficult to fix problems like the old and fast-aging population. Actually is a problem in pretty much all the world western world, but in some countries like Italy this probelm is much bigger.

it sounds like free advertisement for rich kid farmer..you have money you can play around for new cheese and have workers so is not so hard work...this young guys with goats is different story reality, dont have behind rich farming family , so they work really really hard cant afford workers and hardly making break even...i want to see how long is going to take until decide they have only one life and perhaps is not for them!!

I appreciate the attempt of this journalist, but I'm also sick and tired of hearing this average rhetoric. Even after 20 years of hardships, Italy is the second manufacturing powerhouse of Europe in industrial production and manufacturing and it is the 8th most powerful economy in the world (as per GDP- World Bank data). The country managed to create arguably the world's most recognizable brand (MADE IN ITALY) in just 40 years after losing a World War, becoming a hegemony in supercars, luxury clothing, shoes, fine wine and food, nano technology, Design, and more. The nation has almost 80% of its richness in physical (real/tangible) assets and has the lowest private debt of the entire Eurozone. All of this coupled with being the country with 75% of the Unesco World heritage....and ALL I hear is mandoline and complain about bureaucracy and public debt.
YES, there are MANY problems to take care of, but please stop representing this country as if it were the weakest of all. With all the due respect it's appauling and disturbing to say the least.

I don't understand one thing ,if this Italian countryside has no pastures to graze their cattle on ,how can cheeses of good quslity be made there,I am just curious. I haven't seen any lash pastures in this video.
Look up the farm in google maps, it's in the middle of agricoltural land.
Also the fodder is brought to the cows they don't live just with grazing.

As they say you cannot have everything at once. You have Tuscany with a spectacular scenery and good weather (relatively), but you have to deal with the government you have and all of its bureaucracy. That basically is like throwing broken glass on the sidewalk as you walk barefoot. It's a slow and painful walk, but at least you're not in awful weather UK. Hope they're all very successful. And, btw, I see Hamish dating Guido.
