Welcome to the Letterman RUclips Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. These highlights have been artisanally-produced, carefully-curated, and chosen completely at random by an old computer that used to pick numbers for the New York Lotto back in the 90’s.
It is kind of Dave to post this throwback to a time when Jay used to be a regular Late Show guest and Jay and Dave were on much better terms as a bit of a “get well” nod to Jay.
They're fine with each other.
Either way - this appearance was ten years before ‘the late night wars’ happened and it coincides with Jay’s release from the hospital yesterday.
@@morbidmanmusicI think so too, they are not pretending to be best of friends but have no hard feelings either. People are just different and many assume that everyone should be best buddies if they work in the same field.
@@kstepkoover 25 years before…time flies…and hair thinner and more grey…
This is "Late Night" not late show.. Jay was Never a "Late Show guest"
I think Jay has to be one of my favorite guests on any talkshow and podcast, especially on the old Letterman show, I watched the youtube compilation from youtube and was amazed how much he was a master at his craft, with as much ease and confidence delivering the merchandise. I truly hope that all his appearances on Letterman will be released in full quality on this channel.
will it sink or will it float
Leno was actually a very funny stand up comic. Becoming a talk show host really took his edge away
So did Dave moving to 11:30.
No, shelling out to Doritos took it away.
Yeah I agree absolutely. Probably from appearing daily.
Noticed your name, haha. I have the full ID software suite I think including all the Keen games bought from Apogee when released. Unless the floppies have erased themselves over the decades. Good stuff.
He had a bit on Carson once about flying on popular airlines that was incredibly funny.
Leno made a concious decision to appeal to a wide audience when he started doing the talk show and it was very successful for decades for that reason I think. He is a smart businessman so he knew how to tone it down a bit and stay popular. Amazing career and he’s still on the road.
I think he used that line more than once, "Well, it is a bit unorthodox." Going to commercial break and being in two segments. Watched Late Night religiously, back then, and it cracked me up. Jay was the best guest, during that period.
They both look so young! Hard to believe that this was nearly 40 years ago.
I’m glad that Jay is recovering from his accident.
I'm a lifelong fan of letterman and Conan, so obviously I am not much of a fan of leno, but I am also a car nerd and he is a great figure in the automotive community and one of the greatest figures in the history of car culture. Hope he recovers well and keeps filming car videos.
Same. It's often hard to reconcile late-"Tonight Show" era Jay with car culture extraordinaire Jay who I can't get enough of. And then there's early Jay like we see here where he had some truly great jokes and observations.
Exactly. I'm Team Coco all the way (especially during the 2010 _Tonight Show_ conflict) but I've found myself getting into _Jay Leno's Garage_ for the last few years. He's clearly very knowledgeable with cars and his presentation makes it fascinating. Hopefully he makes a full recovery because he seems to enjoy what he does post-_Tonight Show_ and I think what he's been doing now is some of his best work.
@@justinmraap it’s funny that you were fine with Conan stealing Leon’s job but when Leno steals it back you have an issue
@@bmla88 who the hell is Leon
@@justinmraap Leon is Leon. That's all YOU need to know mister.
Best wishes to Jay as he recovers
There was no better "Late Night" guest than Jay Leno.
I always enjoyed Teri Garr
Funny watching Dave be the straight man! Both legends.
Oh wow! Dave literally said, "You know him, you love him, you can't live without him!"
You know him. You love him. You can't live without him.

“I mean, of the thousands and thousands of words which have been written about this, who has blamed Conan? NO ONE!”
You can't argue with that logic!!!
There's no point in being impulsive over business that doesn't concern us but my boy Conan did try to take Leno's job. And ruined both their gigs.
@@sleepingninjaquiettime let’s not forget about Lonny Donnigan
Why blame a guy who isn’t even funny?
@@sleepingninjaquiettime but that's kinda what they all do, isn't it?
I like both Jay and Dave. When Jay hosted the Tonight Show Dave always ran 2nd in the ratings to him. During the brief period Conan hosted the Tonight Show Dave moved into 1st place. When Jay returned to host the Tonight Show he reclaimed 1st place. I've always felt this as a big reason for his animosity towards Jay. Carson, Leno and Letterman stand head and shoulders above the current batch of night show hosts.
I miss these guys.
Jay was at his best when he found the bit that cracked Dave up and worked outward from there (or the "joke on the way to the joke" as he would call it).
Nice to see the King of Late Night and Letterman chatting!
this should have a million views, and thats not sarcastic
Good to see them on good terms. Hope to see him and Conan be friends again soon.
@FoxyPinkGirl Dave and Jay are on speaking terms now. Jay and Conan are not. And really, they were never friends. They maintained a pleasant relationship when Jay had The Tonight Show and Conan had Late Night but nothing beyond that.
Haha Jay kinda looks like one of the villains from Kingpin
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone !
Jay Leno is to comedy is like what Jay Leno is to comedy.
Word is Letterman reached out to Leno while he was in the hospital.
Gilbert Gottfried did that same impressionist bit on the Norm MacDonald live RUclips show some 10 years ago. The same exact line and moves. And he milked it a hundred times and laughed to his own joke every time 😂 Gilbert and Norm were the so funny together just like Leno and Dave were in this clip. These are just golden to watch now.
Would’ve love to have come back after station identification to see that “busting up stuff with a steam roller”
If you're really interested, there's a clip of it on this channel and a full half hour of it over on Don Giller's channel.
@@bobbyk9815 Thanks, I just did! Love the nutritious breakfast one.
My all time favorite guest on Letterman. I think Dave would agree as well.
No, he definitely would not agree.
@@thedude4672 I think Dave felt Leno was a great guest back then. Obviously, they're relationship today is different.
That wasn’t Jay it was Chris Elliott.
I recognized that face! Great makeup job! And he nailed his accent perfectly! 😜😜😜
only Letterman to give the best an opportunity to showcase their ability to be his future competition.
OMG those dead animals on there heads 🤣
Glad I'm not saying "R I P Jay"!
David Michael Letterman (12 de abril de 1947) es un presentador, comediante, escritor y productor de televisión estadounidense.
Love how they blanked out GE, afraid of those damn lawyers to this day
Oh I was trying to figure out what it was, wanna fill in the blanks?
Grateful to God that the abnormal chin he gave to Jay likely deflected most of the fire damage. What was thought of as a curse was a blessing. Mysterious ways.
This guy is on fire!
Haha
@@okay8094 You don't think things are heating up for him?
No seriously, all jokes aside, I wholeheartedly agree.
What hotel did they say around @03:10 ?? They blanked it
What's the name of the hotel that they censored out of the audio?
Berkshire.
@@kstepkoThank you! You see folks, this is why the internet can be a good thing sometimes.
You can tell jay and dave are friends. The business of show business got in the way.
Does anyone know which hotel Jay was poking fun at?
Berkshire. But SSSSHHHH! 🤫 It's a secret.
I want to say the Essex House given how it was advertised as a place guests were housed on NBC for many years.
Conan, Kimmel, Letterman, Leno, Fallon might not be on the same page, but what if nobody hated them and they all do a killer episode together? I guess all their stupid disagreements will come to an end. Nevertheless, Kimmel and Conan are my personal favorites.
I was surprised that Jimmy Fallon didn’t have more to say about Jay’s injury: too concerned with his own death hoax.
Let's not trash anybody's name. At least for a month. Who knows? Positivity that we might create might last forever.
Dave Conan Seth and Craig Kilborn are my favorites.
@@urzishra14 good picks too.
How weird Dave mentioned Steam Roller with Jay’ s recent injury!
Did Jay get run over by a steamroller?
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH No.... He got steamed by a run roller!
This is funny as hell watching in 2023. The guys look like they're wearing wigs. 😝
Kinda odd that they censor “Dundee” and “Berkshire”
Did Jay Leno make a dated gay joke?
Leno...Class Act/PG Rated Humor
They censored the hotel name 🤔
I guess you couldn't say Berkshire on television in 1983.
I thought I hated Leno when he sold out.... Turned out I hated him when he was young too....
The whole interview without a single F*** word, back to the days everybody was polite.
1983, back when Leno was actually funny!
Jay was kinda funny before he had his show, but his show was terrible. Interviewing was terrible, was often annoyed by his guests, and was not funny.
I keep hearing and reading about how funny Leno used to be as a stand-up comedian or as a guest, as opposed to his bland tenure as a talk show host, but after watching some footage I have to genuinely ask: was that guy ever funny? 🤔
Leno was funny on Letterman. Most agree.
Wow.
Big helmets
RIP Leno
nah
We all know what happened.
What’s up with the hair , oh I guess it matches his chin.
Boy he sure burned dave
He's not funny - never has been.
Never been a fan. Even on Letterman.
He also knows how to get into a burn ward.
The roast of Jay Leno....?
Jay Leno now is an unfunny hump. He is so safe and boring with no edge at all.
People think Leno is funny here (besides Dave)? Dying...
So great to see Dave able to make some money off Jay with this video!
Triggered much?
@@mikefolknation2851 how cute, you're triggered so bad you're looking through my profile replying to old comments now! Wow you are worse than I originally thought!
This seems sacrilegious. Lame Leno on Letterman is never good no matter what timeframe.
Ohh nooooo.... looks like Jay took a turn for the worse. RIP to The Chin.
Where do you useless comments people come from?
Back when Jay was humorous. Hope he fully recovers from his gasoline mishap.
I thought it was boiling hot steam that burned him.
