    By law. Any emergency services responding under lights and sirens are to go through at a safe speed. As an ex fire service driver, we were told to go through intersections at 15km/hr while under lights and sirens. Any work sites, follow speed restrictions on the work site

    There is no defence for the firefighter driving that truck. FENZ (Fire Service) Policy states that they must enter an intersection showing a red light at no more than 20km/h and leave at no more than 40 km/h. Also, driver, I know what the rush to get to the scene is like, but at the same time, don't create another incident.

    That Aqua stopped pretty quick, good reactions! Good thing they weren't going any faster. That Fire truck had some speed on too though, wow.

    Driver that is filming (Geoff Mackley?) also need to drive with care. Pursuing the fire truck that is allowed to go faster as per light, siren and training; the filming car needs to follow road rules and should refrain from this chase as their focus seems to have some carelessness of others. And the fact that they remained on the scene making extra obstacle for the emergency vehicle. Good reporting but priority remain safe driving and to give space for emergency vehicle.

      you do realise that geoff is part of the fire service and was driving a fenz ute and was reporting to the same fire don't you?, so technically he has the same rules as a fire truck

    I think the fire truck should have stopped first before proceeding through the red light to check, just like at a give way intersection. As the car had a green light which makes sense for it to travel continuously

    Fire truck was going a bit fast there for that red light they had. Good reactions from both parties but driver needs to cool it a little. Can't help others if they don't get to there in one piece.

    I spent 35+ years driving emergency vehicles in the UK. Been happily retired in NZ 4 years. Having a quick read up on your rules & regs it appears emergency vehicles can go through a junction displaying a red traffic signal at no more that 20kph.
    Firstly the fire engine was doing a tad over 20, so not good, especially in the circumstances shown. (And for the record with good visibility & if the junction was absolutely clear I would have been far quicker in the UK) Apologies, but I’m not aware of the driver training for emergency vehicles here. In saying that I would hope that any emergency vehicle driver travelling through a red light junction would be told to treat it as a give way, and not go carte blanche through as you wish. Clearly from the video this did not happen, and the car that had a green signal made an emergency stop. Luckily there was nobody tailgating that car otherwise it could have been rear ended. You can wag your finger all you like at the car driver for not giving way to the fire engine, but hey, you should expect this to happen. The last thing anyone wants while attending an emergency call is a collision with possible serious or fatal results.

  • @teckout6427
    @teckout6427 Год назад +5

    Emergency services MUST give way to all other traffic when proceeding through a red light. if the vehicles had collided the driver of the fire appliance would have been in the wrong. Going way to fast through a red light, didn't give way and very lucky not to have caused a serious accident. Standing orders for ambulance service is they must come to a complete stop prior to proceeding through a red light.

    All of a sudden everyone has a university degree in what speed is reasonable or legal for emergency vehicles entering intersections and they shouldn’t go faster or proceed with caution at 15 kph, red lights flashing and sirens blaring the truck had already entered the intersection the driver of the car was oblivious to anything going on around them. It was a near miss take away the learnings and hope it’s not your house on fire otherwise you will all be moaning that they didn’t get there fast enough.

      In the US there are Fire departments & EMS that can change the traffic lights with a GPS etc based system. see Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. V2X - Vehicle to everything communication/ data systems are being developed, to alert drivers of other vehicles that emergency services vehicles are fast approaching (intersection or from behind on a motorway etc)

    I see both are in the wrong, the truck for going too quick 30km/h-40km/h as we all know should be going max of 20km/h, and even as it's not required by law, the car for not slowing down a bit to verify that it is safe to cross, just because it's green, doesn't mean it's clear. so I give it a 50/50 fault. (Road code even states at a green light, you can go IF it's safe. so check your left and right still)
    If you hear sirens and the horn blasting like mad, be ready to give way or ready to pull over when safe to do so, not have tunnel vision and go full speed across an intersection...

    • @chris-ryan
      @chris-ryan Месяц назад

      He was likely trying to get out of the way of the camera car responding. If you listen you can't hear the truck siren until you are on the junction.
      Blame is 100% on the fire truck driver who got very lucky here.. presumably, he got a talking to the officer on the truck.
