Leno’s knowledge of every quirk and unique aspect of every single one of his vehicles is astounding...
some people like jay some do not. but the dude is rock solid on keeping old stuff alive and actually keeping his stuff in usable condition. It is amazing to me that he can pull his stuff out and ride it just like that. bravo.
6:19. Now I can say that I've seen Jay Leno riding the Pope!
Nasty but I do kind of like it..
Haha that was funny! 😅 He even lubed up the Pope beforehand, very considerate of him.
The sad part is, it's probably true...
Great gear and so glad Jay is saving these old pieces of art. Well done Sir. Pitty I am in Australia and can not see them for real.
I knew of Frank Kurtis, now I have to google Glen Curtis; Leno's knowledge on everything car and bike-related is incredible. Never paid much attention to him as a tonight-show host, but since seeing his car/bike stuff on YT I have massive respect for the guy.
Glen Curtis of Curtis airplane fame, also made motorcycles and the first 5th wheel trailers.
While you are at it look up the amazing Colonel Albert Pope who pioneered the modern 'safety' bicycle, the motorcycle and the automobile. The biggest manufacturer of such vehicles in America in the late 19th century.
I'm no bike guy, but that's something, amazing it runs, and runs good, this guy knows how to Enjoy himself, like he said long time ago, 1 woman, many toys
Two things impressed me when Jay started the Pope...how much compression it must have (he really had to heave on it) and the fact that it started first kick, which tells me the carburation and ignition were spot on. These old bikes generally used magnetos , which require careful maintenance to provide a healthy spark.
Jay knows very much details about his collections
I swear the first time I ever saw Jay Leno was around 1980, he was a guest on some late night talk show (probably The Tonight Show,) and he rode a motorcycle on stage and then sat down for the interview. Dressed in black leather from head to toe. He pulled a TV Guide out of his jacket and kept reading from it and cracking jokes about it. I did not dream this.
Starts on first kick after ½ years sleep. Wonder how many of the bikes made today will do that in 2117.
And from a bike that's 100 years old.
100 years from now, we are all dead from an asteroid impact
@@stevewyatt3339 Or perhaps only you will
I think this bike talks history and the progression of technology in the last 100 years. I find it awesome relative to it's time. Just fantastic.
Thank you guys!
Wow, first kick! Nice bike.
i took whole of Jays 100kilos or more body weight up on the tree before the kick start started moving into action!
The way he kick started that looked like a dance move
this motorcycle is as old as my great-grand mother.
Happy 100th Birthday, Pope.
I'm the guy that had Don Franks relay you a message that my friend Charlie Emmons had passed away and his 19O3 Kery was available. I rode it in the opening scene of Chasing Rainbows dressed as a WWI British soldier. Crashed it on the second take when the handlebars broke off.
That's so cool. My last m.x. motorcycle went to Don Jones m.x. shop. He had designed handle bar grips with a ball on the end. Grand prix racing the changing grip to the outer porting helped with hand pump and added extra stamina for the ride. If or when you fell, the end of the grip kept the bar sticking it to you. A great safety device.
Awesome piece of history! This bike will turn centenarian soon...
Jay was proud of that one kick
Jay's looking thin and in shape. Even a decent hair cut. I just watched about 10 episodes 2 to 3 years old and then this new one and he's looking healthy.
I like when these two get together.
Love this guy, and all of his vehicles
Beautiful example of early American road going motorcycles. The Pope is one of those Holy Grail type bikes for any motorcycle enthusiast
1000 cc engine on a glorified bicycle, definitely not for the faint of heart
What a Great Cycle!
Valve train is louder than exhaust, unless cutout is open. Looks really fun to ride.
Wow, the Original Pope Mobile!
Jay said, show me a Harley that starts on one kick. My old 45 Flathead did every time.
Great video, loved the bike but missed the part in the beggining when Jay tries to get away when he sees the host, funniest part of the other videos
That Seiko Sportura kinetic gets a good shake on this Popemobile.
Yeah, and it's cooler than the jet bike!
Me: Hey I just bought a new liter bike
Friend: motorcycle?
Me: no, bicycle
GOD BLESS AMERICANS !!! For saving history of humanity for humanity
Badass video
love all Jays old bikes...... when bikers were true bad asses or just crazy
Mr. Roach they were both
👍🇺🇸👏🌐 awesome motorcycle one of the coolest cleanest ones I've seen
need to install that flex grip extenders on my H2.
That guy from My Classic Car didn't know who Glen Curtis was? I can't believe it!
I love it. :D
So interesting
COOL Jay Leno's 1918 Pope Motorcycle
Love it, Thanks
I wonder if in about a 100 years from now, people will ride a Hayabusa as a vintage bike and talk about how that outdated fuel injected system and the very primitive abs technology works, haha.
ROB NAVAEI if you can still get gasoline in 100 years at all I'll be shocked
I wonder why people even wonder. I mean the technology in 100 years will absolutely make a Hayabusa look ancient and dumb.
are you stupid. Im never giving up gasoline even if I have to fucking refine it myself.
Seems like in 100 Years we probably shot the World to pieces
@@pilsplease7561 You won't be here in 100 years' time
I'm not that into bikes, but this is really interesting.
Jay looks less large and younger in this. When was it initially videoed?
At 5:28 you can see the guy in the white hoodie who's about to start running towards him because he thought he was going to drop the motorcycle.
Old stuff is cool
As you learned since Jay any knucklehead should start first kick, not including priming fuel ,which on the pope you did by hand , and by the way that motor is almost identical to a 1918 harley !
1918 Harley production engines were F head design, underhead exhaust and overhead intake valves. They did build some experimental and racing engines with overhead valves.
Just ducking down the super market honey, Start oiling the valves will you please.
I wonder if you have a Curtis twin the Curtiss V8 was a monster.. seems like a large tank what was the range?
1000 cc in 1918?!
wow
always thought jay was cool, but i have only just found out he likes bikes, subzero now jay!!!
I remember being in high school in 1988, i had a brand new Ninja and i got a new edition of Motorcyclist mag in the mail and there was a article about Jay riding a real vintage bike like this one so I'm guessing hes been collecting them for decades now.
awesome
I can see my dad and uncle at 3:42
Was your dad sporting the pink shirt or the white one ?
@@vtwintorapink
is it a royal enfield in the beginning of the video? the blue one??
First kick.. NICE
This was recorded a while back; Jay has less gray hair and Dennis doesn't have any, haha!
Its that bikes centennial year. When they say they don't make em like they used to, thats the truth. You think these new Harleys and Hondas will still be running in 100 years? I kinda doubt it. Back when things were made to last not to fail.
"Pope" moto-sickle When a young boy sits on the saddle , this moto-sickle changes color ! Baw-ha ! Ha ! Ha ! Ha !
At 3:38, "to shoot a little more oil to the bearings"...?
Find me a Harley that starts with 1 kick, lol
Hi Jay that old girl must be hard to find parts for.
Nothing new has been invented since 1905. Electronics just make it work better.
helicopter
combine harvester
jet engine
Overhead cams
Is that the one that Penguin restored?
1000cc what?? How ?
I was wondering the same thing. It’s probably because the stroke of each piston is much longer than modern bikes, which would make the displacement high.
You should invite those fellows from Janus, they are building american bikes and help their economy 👍🤗
and then they made suspension
love it wow
Does it poop?
I sure that my Ford and my Mitsubishi will not make 100 years... ;-)
😎😎
No license plate?
Nicholas Scott. It's just under the seat.
👍
Oh good its in 8 bit...
Technical bike for the year, except for the brakes. i didnt see any ))))
Rear brake only...even Cars of the day didn't have front brakes. If you watch the very beginning when he talks about the clutch and brake on the same pedal, when he pushes all the way down you can see the rod that connects to the rear brake move. Fun Info: 1921 Duesenberg introduced the first 4 wheel brake system in the USA and it was also the first use of hydraulics for braking.
yes, i need to listen as well, (at the beginning of the video))
Here come de judge... iz means de Pope.
looks like a OLD air plain motor
: )
Why do they always say terrific as it is a word for something good?
xGxPhantom Zzz It’s used commonly in an informal manner. Using terrific as in, “causing terror,” is considered archaic
any reading standards the collection
2:14 that's a SCOTTISH not english u very smart man :)))))))))
That chain looks pretty sloppy.
So it's a Popercycle?
1,000cc??? Really???
