It always frustrates me when people only seem to mention how unacceptable it is to kill women and children. Yes that's very wrong but men being killed should be regarded as no less unacceptable. Men are people too with a right to life and families that love them. Their lives should be considered no less important and they should not be excluded from sympathy.

If you learn what he said before and after 911, in his speeches, you'll realize that the attack was very sophisticated and much more multi-dimensional.
He thought that in order to wage a war on America, it was necessary to trap the US Army in a another country. His understanding was that it was the only way possible to fight a war with the US. Afghanistan was his choice for the battleground. He thought it just might be possible to destroy US economy by waging a long war of attrition.
