As paranoid as the Emperor is, he does have a point here, and does realize his mistake in not letting Ruyi raise the first prince. I agree, as I can see him turning out way better had she been allowed to have raised him again once she returned from the cold palace.
@BlackVenus I don't Ruyi was healthy enough as she said. She went through through so much living in the Cold Palace. I would think they was some PTSD at most and at least she had to readjust living back in the harem.

YongHuang has been fully aware of his privilage as the first born son since young. What Chun did by ignoring him is only further cultivating his self awareness. The main root is planted deep inside from even before Ruyi adopted him. Even if Ruyi was to raise him again after she's back from Cold Palace, he'll not be much better from what shown here. At most, he'll know better when to pretend and how to please his father. His ambition is crooked from the days he's bullied by his nannies.
Every child usually after they reach a certain age feels they need to be strong for their parents when their parents lose a loved one and are grieving. The emperor is so paranoid in a world/situation he created.
He was right to be paranoid this time; the eldest was scheming. But his paranoia gets worse from here
In a previous episode, Hailan tricked the princes into not crying at the funeral to look 'dependable' and 'strong' even though it was unfiflial, then she hinted via her son to the Emporer that the two princes were scheming for the crown prince position which would scare the emperor since he was so paranoid. So first what happened was the emperor thought they were unfifilial, and when they said they wanted to be dependable- boom. his suspicious confirmed

It is their "duty "to cry. They have that belief that more people cry for you in your funeral, the more good karma you will receive in the next life. That's why the moment a royal or noble died, their subject will automatically wail - especially if it's the emperor or empress - even the citizens outside of palace will show grieve (even if that's not sincere).
In this case, they didn't cry for the empress so that is punishable already. If they were sincere the emperor would've forgive them but because hailan already set up the trap by making the emperor believe that they were after the throne (which is true) he knew they were trying to impress him which doubles their sin because at a time where they should be grieving, they were being opportunistic and thinking of their own gain.
If they have no conscience like that then someday they could end up killing him for the throne (which do happen in history)

其實我覺得令妃並沒有比較厲害，只是他相較於其他嬪妃更懂得對皇帝投其所好、百依百順，而對於其他嬪妃在檯面上也是刻意示弱，可能這和他的出身低下有關係，所以他可以為了消滅敵人去做出尊嚴的犧牲。

@@kokopium1530 Well, after further thought he had a point. If he let what they say move him and go easy, whats to say that they won't be more daring the next time and challenge his authority. They were given the instruction to mourn the Queen's passing but they didn't adhere to the Fathers instruction they listened instead to what they heard and then their mother's instruction which tells the Emperor that his instruction doesn't matter to them which enraged him. We all know that these concubines and their sons are all out for the throne....🙄😉

Literally not how it worked in ancient China. Obviously not everyone liked Empresses. Hell, most times not even the Emperor liked their own Empress. EVERYONE still had to mourn since she is the "mother of the nation". If you dont mourn you're not filial, which was a HUGE deal to them.

I know everyone were mad at the Emperor, but he was truly grieving, and sometimes we don't think clearly when in so much emotional pain. At this point, he was already getting paranoid and unhappy, and he goes like that for most of the drama after, that's why Ruyi doesn't want to be Empress at her ending days, because she saw how much that life poisoned and killed the soul of the man she once loved. Most of people hate the Emperor, but he was a "victim" of that life as much as anyone else, and was betrayed may times during his life.
While I agree with you to a point, he caused most of the strife in his harem and his kingdom. He wasn't consistent in his rewards or punishment, so no one could ever gauge how to be around him. He tends to prefer "yes" men because he gets what he wants. The scheming that happened was mostly attributed to his inconsistent treatment of the women and children. As for his kingdom, during the 2nd half of his reign, it was full of corruption and became much less prosperous. He was responsible for the behavior of both his harem and his kingdom the same way high management is responsible for the culture of their companies. Poor leadership results in poor outcomes below.

True. There are few details that have been left out in the clips that you see on youtube, but if you watch the full series, you will kinda understand why the emperor become so paranoid. He saw his children died (Yi and Mei children, one of them even born deformed due to the mercury poisoning). He was horrified that the concubine that he choose are capable of hurting pregnant woman and unborn children. He is afraid someone would scheme against him (which they did). His paranoid became worse once Yongzheng and Jia scheme to hurt him and then help him to court favor.

You see, it is mandatory to cry (even if it's fake) at a funeral so not only were they breaking protocol (something very important for everyone at court), the had been tipped off that these two were trying to impress him in order to become Crown Prince. It was a trap set by one the concubines who knew these two and their mother were scheming to gain favour with the emperor so that she would become empress.

Its a combination of other reasons as well...crying is a formality in the funeral even more so that the deceased is the legal wife of the emperor...as sons of mistresses, not crying is considered disrespectful so it has nothing to do with them feeling emotionally sad.
In previous episodes the emperor already had his suspicion on the way the princes' mother acted, that she is trying to get her sons the position of the crown prince. The emperor considers that a taboo. Its like cursing him to die faster. If you watched the full episode you'll know...sometimes the english subtitles...it does not fully convey the real meaning the scene is intending to portray. But then the emperor is crap and useless anyways.😅😂
I understand where you are coming from, but this is traditional and modern haven't apply in the old ancient times. If people from the old time adapt to modern society everyone will have freedom, knowledge education, and common sense. I do wish modern time could have apply early because I also get upset with tradition rules when I watch chinese historical.

Because unlike today's medicine, children died a lot in that era for a multitude of reasons, so did the wives. So, his job is to have as many potential heirs as possible because the death rate can be so high. Giving birth was very much risky in this time period, so an Emperor only having one wife wouldn't make sense, that's why he had a main wife, few other wives and concubines to be safe. You also have to remember that life expectancy weren't like they are now. Being in your 30's was seen as old, most people got married in their teens, had kids quickly.
