Damn, rookie mistake. How hard is it to just not shoe the horse before filming starts? Horses can survive without shoes, not to mention this horse has black hooves, which are much stronger than white, so there's not much need to have the horse shod for these shots. I didn't notice. Thanks for pointing it out, mate.

YESSSSS! I remember when I went to a horse camp at one point, and they had a tv where we could watch horse movies at the end of the day, and whenever we (myself and 4-5 others) did, we criticized it the whole time!
This was EXACTLY how I was with my mom when we watched this movie together. I was also mildly annoyed that they used a thoroughbred to play a so called mustang.
Black beauty was the first full length book I ever read, so it has a super special place in my heart ❤ I was four and didn't understand 90% of it, so the next time I read it a couple years later, it was like a book I'd never read before 😂😂😂 but I still love it! Of course the movies are all so different but still
My mum read it to me when I was very small, a chapter each night when I went to bed. She won the book as a prize when she was at school, I think she still has it and she's in her 70s now. I remember the beautiful colour illustration in the fly leaf. Like you I also read it myself when I was older. It completely traumatised me! What with that, Bambi, and Watership Down it's a wonder I'm not a manic depressive!

@@Smerkinduh as someone who works with wild mustangs, yes you do “chase” them around. In the wild that’s what horses do to each other to show who’s boss, and that’s what you do with mustangs to make sure you don’t get trampled :)

I know this is supposed to be a joke, but it is actually so true. My little cousin watches Spirit Riding Free and she now loves horses. There's nothing wrong with that, lots of little children love horses, but the thing is, she is obsessed with wild horses and thinks that she can easily break one in by jumping on it's back and galloping off into the distance, just like Lucky (the girl in Spirit Riding Free) does the first time she meets Spirit. It just annoys me that kids TV shows about horses can influence children in that way and giving them false information about horses and what they're like.
My dad and I love watching movies together Westerns, Horse Movies, Movies that take place in the wilderness/survival… picking them apart is what makes it fun!

Definitely Flash (Disney). It still has a slight element of 'any saddle will fit' (one of my bugbears) but it's a lovely movie and most of it rings true. The boy in it is a natural rider but not at all show-offy and unusually I found myself to be on his side rather than hating him for all the things he was doing wrong lol. It's one of those movies I can always watch again. It's here on You Tube.
Have you tried "walk Ride Rodeo"? I have watched it OVER and OVER. I love it, but it does have some violence in it, like car accidents. Hope you like it, if you watch it :)

Didn't stop me noticing that when the 'piebald' horse was jumping in the arena you could see that they'd painted on the markings! Methinks the horse they started out with turned out to be not much of a jumper 🤣🤣.

I think that's because Spirit's plot was actually original for a horse movie. Like it made a (fairly oversimplified) point about colonialism, you could feel the horse's emotions and longing for his herd and to be free, and his relationship with Little Creek takes time to develop and is based on mutual trust and respect. I'd take that over every other "I know nothin about horses but this very very wild and dangerous horse will bond with me at first siht and we'll ride off into the sunset bareback for my very first time riding!" horse story. Even Secretariat was a better movie than this despite the mild inaccuracies to IRL events

I'm a terrible nitpicker and end up shouting at the tv when they show unrealistic horsey things, but somehow I have a soft spot for Heartland. I think the amazing scenery stuns me into submission! However it does P me off how they do a quick five minute join-up and suddenly the 'problem horse' is all ready to go off to his new career carrying disabled children or doing a bit of trick riding.
The 1994 Black beauty is really close to the book and it's one of the few horse movies that doesn't get on my nerves
