Hello, and welcome to Show Me Cables. Today we’ll be taking a look at the different styles of DVI.
DVI is a common video type used on many computers and monitors. It stands for Digital Visual Interface…but that doesn’t really tell you anything you need to know.
What you DO need to know are the different styles, because it can often cause confusion.
There are 3 styles of DVI: DVI-A, DVI-D, and DVI-I.
Let’s start off by looking at DVI-A. DVI-A has pretty much been phased out and isn’t used on newer equipment. The “A” stands for Analog and carries an analog signal. We’ll get to why this is important in just a moment. DVI-A is capable of a maximum resolution of 1920x1080. The pin arrangement features 4 pins around a flat pin. And 12 additional pins.
DVI-D is much more common and the “D” stands for Digital and carries a digital signal. Because DVI-D is a digital signal and DVI-A is an analog signal, you are not able to use a DVI-D cable with DVI-A equipment. Or vice versa. Because the signals are incompatible.
DVI-D is available in two styles, Single Link and Dual Link.
DVI-D Single Link uses a pin arrangement of a single flat pin. And two blocks of pins, each with 9 a piece. It is capable of maximum resolution of 1920x1080 at 4.59 Gbps.
DVI-D Dual Link uses a pin arrangement of a single flat pin. And 3 solid rows of 8 pins each. It is capable of maximum resolution of 2048x1536 at 9.9 Gbps.
A Single Link cable sends one digital signal at a time, while a Dual Link can send two signals. This is what allows for the higher data flow and larger resolution.
A Dual Link cable can always be used in place of a Single Link cable with no problems. A Single Link cable can sometimes be used in place of a Dual Link cable, but it would depend on your system requirements.
DVI-I is also very common and the “I” stands for Integrated and is capable of carrying either a Digital or Analog signal. So it can be used with either DVI-D or DVI-A.
DVI-I is also available in both Single Link and Dual Link styles.
DVI-I Single Link uses a pin arrangement of a flat pin surrounded by 4 pins. And two blocks of pins, each with 9 a piece. It is capable of resolution up to 1600x1200 at 4.95 Gbps.
DVI-I Dual Link uses a pin arrangement of a single flat pin surrounded by 4 pins. And 3 solid rows of 8 pins each. It is capable of resolution up to 2048x1536 at 9.9 Gbps.

after 7 years , I am now watching this video and benefiting from it
Finally learned the right terms after 4 years building my pc. My DVI-D(single link) connector is connected to DVI-D(dual link) on my monitor and graphics card.
Dude thank you so much, this video easily removed the headache of not knowing what DVI to get
100% Right 👍
Very informative. You just helped me figure out a problem I was having. I had an DVI -D plugged in a DVI- A port. I was wondering why it wasn't working. Thank you SIr.

Very good. Thank you. A seemingly complicated subject simplified. Well explained.
Thanks for breaking it down.
My GPU has both DVI-I & DVI-D, and I was wondering which one I should use for a dual-monitor setup (alongside HDMI).
I was looking for this video, thanks.
Very helpful, i learned much about this forgotten Cable , thanks for sharing
Very informative, thank you! I needed to get some info for cables with a video processor for medical equipment and this was so informative!
Thanks for the simple but great info!
Learnt something today, I can finally use DVI D dual link with my gtx 1050 as my monitor also has a DVI D dual link port :D
Did you mean Learned?
@@THENOOBISYOU bruh shut up
Thank You for the video, very useful. I ordered a DVI to VGA adapter and did not realize that I need the 4 pins for the analog signals. Now I know why I was not getting video. My monitor is an old LCD that has connections for VGA and DVI so I guess ordering a DVI-i to DVI cable will work with my Nvida Quadro to my LCD monitor. Thanks again.
Thank i wanted this video after 3 years👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Very informative video. Thank you!
DVI-D Dual Link is definitely capable of resolutions up to 2560x1600 at 60Hz. the 2048x1536 is the maximum at 85Hz.
Excellent explanation. Thanks.
Thank you, this was very helpful.
Very nice upload

Great Video!! Thanks so Much!
Well explained. 👍
good video! you really helped me ;)
Good Explanation. Did find one error. It was stated the speed of DVI-D Single is 4.59 Gbps but is actually 4.95 Gbps.
Thank for your explanation
Thanks, helpful!
Save my day. Very good video.
very helpful vid. thanks
Useful,thank you !
Many thanks ! 🙏
Thank you for a useful information. By the way, if I accidentally inserted a DVI-D dual-link cable to a DVI-D single-link port graphics will it damage the port?
Thanks bro 😊
Thanks a lot !

Thank you for useful information I still have to process all these different cables.Trying to connect a $75 Bunker Hill a analog two camera security system into a Acer monitor that has a VGA & one of those DVI - a I'm trying to get a compatible cable to join these to maybe your company can help me thank you
Now I know. Thanks!
VGA HDMI and DisplayPort all only have one type of connector and I don't know what the difference is between HDMI and DisplayPort but everyone says DisplayPort is better which confuses me because if it was better wouldn't all the TV manufacturers use it instead of HDMI?
There are a million videos like this. How about a video about what you can do it your monitor has different options than your pc?
There seem to be a lot of conversion cables about, like DVI to HDMI and so on.
Last time I went to looks at monitors at the chain office store (the one with two names), they all had VGA connectors, and nothing had display port.
Hi, if I want to connect a dvi-d single to hdmi cable, in a dvi-d dual (output) of my phrafic card, it works?
Instant sub
Nice FYI vid sir.
Hey can i use chromecast in a tv with dvi d dual link and does it support audio via dvi d to hdmi?

Thanks, i thought i had DVI a when instead i had a single link DVI D.
Btw i kept mixing up DVI a and DVI i
This video certainly answers my questions. Now I need new monitors to match my new GPU. Poo Hoo HOO!
If you monitor supports it can get all versions of DVI-d
i'm using dvi-I dual link to vga on my thin client however i cannot seem to select 1080p on the display settings menu and even when im installing linux its only on low res display and i cannot detect my monitor type why is that? i hope you can help me

so can i use single dvi d link cable with a gtx 1060 thast dual link?
can i remove the 4 threads from dvi-i to make it work with dvi-d ?
Can we extend the display by using both HDMI and DVI ports from the Graphic card
my monitor has DVI-D dual link connector and my video card has DVI-i dual connector can i connect this two? and if answer is yes then with what cable? thank you in advance
If I have a dvi d dual link slot in my pc and a vga slot in my monitor do I get a dvi d dual link male to vga male?
hey i have an infocus lp70+ projector and i need a dvi cable thats a dvi i dual link but with 30 3 rows of 10 pins instead of 8 and cant find it. where can i get one?
2:26 "A dual link cable can always be used in place of a single link cable".............just what I wanted to know, thank you.
There is still one more type not mentioned, unless I missed it. It has a single flat blade and 3 rows of 10 pins. Not sure what it is used for. I have a HDMI to this type of adapter.
My VGA is a RX 550 and my monitor a AOC F19, both have a DVI-D Dual link connector. Can i use a DVI-D Single Link cable to connect my RX 550 to my monitor? Help please..
Can I use a Dvi D single link on a Dvi double link?
Well done video. Are there any DVI cables that can send sound to an HDMI connected TV?
Nah
there are but you need to use a DVI-I Dual to achieve that, on a GPU through a DVI connection to a TV with an HDMI end, I did for almost 10 years and there's no noticeable bandwidth loss, but you need to use a dedicated GPU for the sound device to work, both nvidia & amd will work for this, intel already does it, I tried to use an on-board DVI port and that doesn't carry sound whatsoever so don't bother trying it, only on HDMI you will get sound if it comes directly from the mobo in most cases.
@@hazik_3606 you need to some more research if you're just going to say "nah".
my pc has 18+1 pin DVI-D single link but my monitor is VGA, i cannot find an adapter converter or cable online, they are all 24+1 DVI-D dual link, if i buy a female 24+1 pin dual link adapter can i connect my male 18=1 pin dvi-d single link cable to it from my pc and then my VGA cable from the adapter to my monitor?
so i have dvi i tv and i want to share my computer screen into her, i can buy any dvi adpater to hdmi is that it?
Can i use a dvi d in a dvi I slot?
Ok. My mom's new computer's graphics card uses DVI-D Dual. I want to hookup a VGA monitor. I purchased a DVI-D single cable and DVI-D Dual coverter to VGA converter as recommended by a tech store. Will this work? What do I need?
It needs to be an active adapter. Since DVI-D carries no analog signales, it needs tobe converted to a format the alaog connection on the monitor can understand.
thanks
my dell 3007wfp Monitors have only a dvi-i Input but a max Resolution of 2560 x 1600 i use. because you've said dvi-i has an lower max Resolution pls correct It. greetz
Does DVI-A transmit sound or not? I have a HDMI cable connected to a DVI connector but only transmitts video.
To get audio you need to get aux to aux plug from your PC headphones slot to your monitor/tv/screen headphones slot, you control the volume from your monitor/tv (or remote).. only 1 year late of a reply
My monitor is capable of resolution up to 1920x1080. Are these cables capable of displaying 16:9 ratio? If so, which would be the recommended cable between DVI-D Single, DVI-D Dual, and DVI-I Dual? I'm assuming DVI-I Dual, but I want to be safe with my decision.
Unless you're really on a budget there is no reason not to get a DVI-D Dual Link cable.
Which dvi carry video and audio too
I have a dvi-a adaptor to vga but it doesnt work when i connect the vga cable from the monitor says no signal

Please help me here, I have a GTX 1060 6GB card on the way that supports a DVI-D dual link cable. I can't find a clear answer on google if the cable can produce sound or not since it's missing the analog part. If it can't make sound, how do I go about making any sound at all then?
The DVI cable does NOT transport the sound, only the image, but you can get a cable that has stereo jacks 3,5mm at both ends and you put one of them in the sound card audio out and the other one in the monitor at audio in (if necessary you can use an adapter from stereo jack to dual phono). I have seen on the market DVI cables with integrated audio jack cable that branches out of the connectors and they usually have the phono adapter included in the price.
DVI-I Dual Link 24+5 Pin. Connector Work with . DVI-D Dual Link 24+1 Pin , Possible or not Please Reply
Can I use a dual link dvi d cable if my pc has a dual link dvi I
Can i put dvi-d dual link to a dvi-i dual link..
Coz my vcard has dvi-i dual link and my monitor only has a dvi-d dual link?
Thanks in advance
Did it work i have the same question
I saw this the day after i bought a wrong adapter from vga to dvi a when my gpu has d dual link
I’ve got a similar problem like you have.
Lol yesterday i bought wrong, and now i google for this cuz im prepering to go in a store again.
so does dvi-i carry audio and video signal at the same time like hdmi?
No
Can i use a dvi-d dual link to connect graphics card to monitor , one head in monitor and other in card, will that work??
Yes as long as both the card and monitor accept a DVI-D Dual Link connector
1:05 im pretty sure its 1920x1200
I have a not too old LED 1366X768, 16:9 VGA only monitor made by ASUS. Will a DVI-D converter like the one you showed in the video work with my monitor? I asked the store that sells the converter by phone and they told me that it won't work and that I shouldn't buy it. But I am not sure that this is 100% true. I have an ASUS Radeon HD7750 1 GB graphics card and I have it already connected it through a DVI-I to VGA connector. It works very well with my monitor. But maybe DVI-D is different than DVI-I that I now use and I am thinking of upgrading to a new GPU that will probably have DVI-D output only. Also could I possibly try a DisplayPort to VGA converter. Will that work with my 1366X768 16:9 monitor? Could you please tell me your opinion on my problem? I live in South Europe so I cannot call you, sorry.
Ok so I need help my monitor has a dvi d port while my computer has a dvi I port what do I do?
Can i connect dvi a in dvi d video card?
Can i use a dvi d dual link on a port for dvi i dual link
Can I put DVI-D cable in DVI-I slot?
Can i use DVI-D Gpu with my DVI-I LED
