I am very troubled by having found out that Hanya Yanagihara confirmed on not having done any research on sexual abuse, trauma or self-harm. I don't understand how someone write a book about such important and delicate topics without consulting professionals and people who indeed have had such experiences.
I had no idea of this and indeed, if accurate, it is worrisome

it was portrayed realistically though. Apart from the scene where every single truck driver in USA is apparently a pedophile (which was pretty dumb I have to admit) I really can't think of any other fictional story that handled these subjects any better. I'm open to be proven wrong though, since I admittedly haven't interacted with much media that deals with these subjects, but movies like Promising young woman, Gerald's game, Crash and Irreversible seem like dumb children's movies in comparison to this novel, especially the first 3.
Probably she know it about near experience, never cured. Should she done that research? Probably.
@@ry.0 I'm pretty certain she said in one of the interviews that she talked with trauma victims before writing the book. People really latch on to that 9 year old interview where she says that she hasn't done any research on cutting and every hater twisted her words as in she didn't do any research about abuse and dozens of other subjects the books deals with.

Será porque Tan poca vida es una especie de experimento llevando a los límites el dolor humano ¿? Y al final si va a terapia, pero la terapia no lo puede todo, pensar eso sería poco realista.
Eso es verdad el libro es sufrimiento pero la autora tiene una forma de escribir interesante yo lo releere en inglés por la escritura.Le falta trigger warnigs en la edición en español solo la versión en inglés la tiene. También es muy crudo en algunas escenas y grotesco.
Ese es el chiste, a la gente le gusta sufrir y desesperarse porque crees que la rosa de guadalupe es muy famosa

i personally think people are so pushed to defend it is because of their empathy for jude, which is absolutely understandable, but not enough to justify the lack of purpose in yanagihara’s telling of jude’s ineffable torture and pain- it turns the novel into a long slew of self destruction and loathing, leaving you unsatisfyingly crushed.
I found your vid by searching "a little life horrible" because I recently had yet another conversation with a friend who was passionately defending this book... and I was reminded of why I hated it. All the suffering and torture porn could have served some sort of purpose if, as you say, there was some character development, or some believably warm moments to counteract the cold ones. And yet for such a long book, it's actually pretty skin-deep and provides very little exploration of true friendship or realistic suffering that isn't just aimed to shock.
I re-watched the video recently myself. My only regret is that I could have conveyed how horrible it is even more
If you have read the book thoroughly, how can u say there were no warm moments to counteract the cold ones?? And the thw book did not show true friendship????? Harold being a father figure to jude? ADOPTING JUDE? His friends being there for him throughout their lives? Andy, willem , malcolm, richard even, they are all great examples of true friends and their friendship was v realistic and beautiful. Also i dont understand people calling it torture porn? I mean the writer def explored the story in open words but nowhere was the trahma described in a way thag could be called porn
If life is sometimes sad and depressing enough so what's the point in reading a story that's going to remind or make you feel like that (unless there's character development or lessons to learn) 🙃 thanks Radu for keeping me away from this book 😃

I think the biggest problems this book suffered from is inconsistensy in tone. I really didn't like how all others characters problems didn't meter because Jude tragic life, JB was through drugs addiction and yet it was just to split the group, it just seemed so odd how all the events in the book were happening along side the most terrible abuse person can go through, it just gives wired framing and perspective
The book is about Jude; when you become older, your life becomes more and more about you and so it is with the book; the others become less important because Jude‘s experiences get heavier and heavier

@@Sleepygraveyard i think it‘s not a deficiency. Literature has no rules to follow. Literally can work with its form also, in order to make a point. The point that the change in form makes is that it was all about Jude in the first place and that his thought get more and more important than everything else to him. He‘s constantly thinking about his life.
When I first read it, I cried a lot and thought it was amazing. But a day later when I composed myself, my opinion already faded a bit. I think it’s okay in general but it’s basically torture prn/emotional prn and that’s probably the reason people love it so much - you don’t think that critical while you’re crying your eyes out :) I hated most of the characters with my whole heart but I didn’t realise it until I really started reflecting on what I just read.

I wanted to find book content on RUclips for a long time, but the booktube community doesn't come out of the same kind of books and that started to despair me a bit since I want to broaden my vision of the types of books that exist but sometimes I don't know how look for it. Very good video

I love the book but i understand why people hate It, i know it's deppressing but It Is supposed that this book shows us that some persons has a bad life and never gets good, a little life Is an experiment, in words of the author. The lazy writing i get It, i have to accept It was too long, but for me at least, i loved the story cause It was Easy to relate, and It was important because also, the book tells you that no matters if a person Is succesful, rich, etc, that doesn't mean they are 100 % good.
Edit: i highly recommend you to watch hanya's interviews , you won't like the book anyways, but at least you'll understand More things not mentioned in the book

Man, the entire book was a complete agony, lazy writing, wasted characters, and a plot that revolves around the same thing for basically the entire book. I honestly didn't like it, and if you're a sensitive person don't read this thing, ahh and to top it off there aren't enough trigger warnings in this sh*t!.

How is it 'lazy writing'? I'm interested in your opinion on the composition and characterization. I find the writing to be detailed and enthralling, purposefully repetitive in that the author creates foreshadowing, covert literary 'clues'/preludes and continuums that enforce the plot and outcomes. The epicentre of the plot is one person's trauma and his relationships around the trauma, that is the authorial motivation, perhaps. Jude suffers from PTSD and toxic stress all his life, that is not unrealistic- it happens to people who 'attempt' to survive trauma/abuse.

I think yall on crack, a little life was amazing to me. I dont like how you implied that the lgbtq characters and the pedophilia were connected. I honestly found that one of the better takes from the book. That a persons sadness and sorrows as a lgbtq person dont necessarily have to revolve around their sexuality. I dont like the critique of "it had no plot" because as someone who reads biographies I know there are plenty of ways to write a book eith no plot yet still interesting. And I think the book is more so supposed to show that no matter how much you try to help someone it will ultimately depend on them to push through whats hurting them. Which is honestly very relatable. How many of us give and give advice to friends and watch them make mistakes? I loved the book very much and made me appreciate life even more, I dont understand the hate it gets tbh.

Imo the drama was exaggerated and I felt like the author plays bingo... Which is sad because I liked the characters and I felt connected to them in the beginning but then I was only thinking oh come on what's next! I don't think all of the drama was actually needed, sometimes it felt forced
I’m a very emotional person and cry easily but this book didn’t make me sad at all, I haven’t cried once. It’s just so forced and overreacted. What a big waste of time was to read this.

I also have this book for almost 6 months or more but I just tossed it somewhere where I can't see it,, read only part 1 and stopped. But today I tried to open this book and re-read and just I don't feel it. meh
Siempre me alejo de estos libros, siento que su finalidad es solo manipular al lector para estar triste. Libros como Boulevard y los libros de Alex Mírez también tienen esta manipulación (Al menos sus finales según me dijeron) pero al lado de este deben ser de comedia, aun así tampoco los leeré. Los libros de Alex Mírez no te hacen sufrir, al menos no de la manera que piensas. Tipo, no tienen finales similares a Boulevard. En mi opinión personal, son bastante interesantes. Siempre le agrega un toque de misterio aún así catalogue la historia como de "romance". En fin, hay un montón de libros en el mundo, y es posible que lo que me guste a mí no te guste a ti, pero si puedes y quieres, no estaría tan mal darles una oportunidad algún día. :)
Pienso que el sentido del libro no era crear una historia completamente coherente o precisamente realista, el sentido del libro era más parecido a un proyecto de indagación psicologíca para exponer la naturaleza humana y replantear de diferente manera temas como el suicidio, abusos etc. Por eso el libro es bastante exagerado, y como dijo la autora: el libro no fue creado para hacerte llorar. El libro es una especie de experimento llevando a los límites el dolor humano. Se puede ver en la falta de cronología y tiempo.

After having given this novel (which pains me to even use as a word to describe the book) several attempts, I can say with absolute confidence it is just a terrible book. The story makes no sense, the characters are all developed horribly, and the writing is so colloquial that I began to doubt whether or not it was written by an adult or a child.

Unfortunately, I came across this book while I started to not feel well mentally. And without knowing this book was brealing my mentall health more and more as I was reading. I think that some of the problems wouldn't have occured if I hadn't read that book. I regret that I didn't do enough research about it so I would have resigned from reading it

To me I just felt really seen. So many times movies and books have a character be sad then he randomly realizes “wait why don’t I just appreciate life” and everything is all happy at the end. But in reality, it’s not always like that. It’s annoying watching these people who don’t know what it’s like to be depressed acting like it’s easy to get over. So it was refreshing to finally see a main character who really was just tortured. Who had a realistic ending. It’s important to gain that sympathy from this book.
Absolutely agree with you, I hate that book. And also the fact that the author is a straight women, writing about gay man in such situations, makes me feel weird, makes me look at her at the type of straight women who is obsess and fetishizes gay man.
Wtf,she doesn't have to be gay to write about a gay man,and viceversa. Look at banana fish is about a boy,,it treats sick things like pedophilia,violation and suicide in a well and respectful way and is was writing by a women. Look at Lolita,is a book about a girl who suffer things like that and is very well writing by a men.

it does rub me the wrong way that you mispronounced the author's name for a humorous gag. i get that you may not know how to accurately pronounce it, but you could have looked it up and tried your best to pronounce it in video [obviously saying you're sorry if it wasn't well pronounced] ethnic names often get butchered for fun and it does rub me all the wrong ways that it was used in what seems to be a way to get us to chuckle ://
I can see your point but I assure you there was no ill intent there. I'd have you laugh at my bad attempts, certainly not at her name, that's in poor taste.
You also have to understand he is speaking in his second language, English not being his first. Sometimes the switch is not fast enough and you can mispronounce something as easy as Cassandra or another Romanian name or any common word. It happens to bilingual or trilingual people often.
i cant stand this book. I read from last year till now and still 400 pages left. It makes me self-doubt when many people love it and I dont see anything good at all. Ah no, i got one part interesting, the first part when 4 friends in bar of cafe something and one or two friends had to think of how to spend money wisely. That detail is real-life detail. And yep, i agree with you that no development at all. And it is so perfect world that the main character got support from all people around him. Like he is a prince with broken heart in the past. The writing technique is so bad to keep me with the book. I will quit it for good.

The thing that gets me with this book is that I dated someone who was like Jude in many ways. I loved him with all my heart and I had to come to terms with the reality that no amount of love, from me or his family would change just how broken this person was. He played the game; went to therapy, took pills and did what he was told but when he was bad, really bad. His entire person was just...monotone and bleak and he absolutely despised the idea of anyone loving him in anyway. You touched on how Jude had suicidal tendencies that suddenly vanish, and unfortunately they do come across like that. It's cruel because it leaves loved ones with hope but those tendencies always come back.
Reading his relationship with Willem was like re-living the relationship I had. I think anyone would feel the same if they ever had any sort of relationship with someone that severely depressed.
Even my current partner of nearly 4 years noticed a shift in me while reading because I honestly felt like I was reliving the past. Even my dog, an already nervous greyhound, had started being extremely cuddly with me. She sort of knew when I was reading because she would just appear next to me while I was sobbing like an idiot. When I finished the book I but it back on my shelf and I remain annoyingly aware of it just sat there, staring. I am probably going to donate it (or throw it away) because it's now like an item that belongs to this past relationship I had. Like keeping a hoodie around that belongs to an ex. I don't want it in my life anymore because it belongs to a past life I had with a very broken guy I once knew.
I am thankful for it though, bitterly. It brought closure in a horrible way that I never got from before.
I love this book and i can't relate to people hating this tbh though I understand it's not for everyone. Hanya's writing is unmatched. I love The People in the trees too..
Comencé a leer este libro y creo que lo abandone pasadas las primeras 60 páginas, porque no me agrado JB. Su personaje se siente superior a los demás y no soporto eso. Y menos mal lo deje porque si Jude sufre una y otra vez sin cambiar nada, me habría sentido frustrada

I personally loved this book (it's one of my favourite books).
That's the thing I love about reading it is so subjective. e.g I didn't enjoy the silent patient but so many other people did. It's really fascinating to me.
The point of the book was to portray a character who never heals. Period. It's a fairytale, you are not quite supposed to compare it with real life. Hanya was very clear about it. Life is messy in general. Most people I have seen who hate the book is solely because they don't find that arc where everything is happily ever after. All the pain is pointless. Yes, that's the point.

As someone with complex PTSD, with a disabled girlfriend, I’ll avoid this book. I want to read it but I feel like it may be simultaneously glossing over and glorifying it’s subject matter in an uninformed and possibly even irresponsible way.

I just finished it and it's just traumatic, Did I like it? Idk, I like the writing and the characters but I didn't like the neverending cycle of suffering, I wanted more of the other characters and more story (without the suffering)
