I learned my lesson with chasing the peace of mind on so many different platforms, at this point in my life I just drive them stock w/ extended warrant.
But If my f80 was out of warranty I am not 100% sure i'd still do this mod, if I could see the true incidence of crank failure (official bmw data), then i could make a decisions whether I wanted to mitigate the risk or not.
back when I had an s2000 there was a similar issue with the TCT

The infamous crank hub! I still haven't done this to my M3 and I have been running full E85 for a few years now. (6 speed manual)

The general consensus is that there’s not a single car that suffered catastrophic enginefailure from a slipped crank hub, on the other hand there are a few cars that got bent valves or seized engines from the “upgraded” hub, seems that when these upgraded hubs fail they fail in an epic way. It’s maybe one those if it’s not broken don’t fix it, or fix it with the OEM part.
Well OEM part is the one that fails.
I have personally met a guy who spun his in stock turbos and a tune at only 6K miles.

It would have been great if you did a full video of the Crank hub upgrade, just to give us a picture of how much work is needed just to upgrade the Crank hub.

John Smith id be skeptical of a spline lock. Yes it’s cheaper but it’s not necessarily the bolt coming lose. It’s the gears slipping against the friction washer

I have a %100 stock f80 I wanted to get stage 1 bm3 still stock just tune do I have to do the crank hub ASAP for this? I drive the car rather conservatively I just like to do a pull when merging onto the highway

I didn't think SCH was an issue with 6MT F8X, is it? At least the only ones I've come across online have all been DCT. Kies seems very cool indeed; exactly who I would use for work if I lived in the area.
It’s really an issue on all cars pushing more power. I really didn’t need to do this but I’d never sleep well if I hadn’t gotten it done.

You should have zero concern. Don’t worry and enjoy the car.
Curious it appears you live you live the S Plainfield/Edison area... Why not use Maximum PSI or AutoCouture vs Kies Motorsports?
I had a bad experience with Max PSI. Maybe it was a one off but it left a bad taste. Kies works on cars the way I would - hence my decision to go with them even though they are fairly far

Hey Tommy, glad you got some peace of mind. Did you consider the VTT crank hub fix and the bolt capture? If you did, is there a reason you didn't go with it?
I didn’t think the bolt capture was enough. Even with the capture the hub can slip

You made the right choice! I just spun my crank after running an e85 tune. It seems to be the rule rather than the exception on e85 tuned s55's.

@@TommyLGarage nope, having to have the work done at the dealership. After some convincing and having the regional tech rep approve the max psi fix, they are doing the install. They are charging about $2500 MORE than most shops charge. But it's cheaper than shipping the car.

The cost for the Crank hub fix depends on the hourly rate the shop charges, so it can be on the low end at around $3200 or up to $6200 on the higher end. I found that SSR-Performance in CA charges $3200 to $3600 installed. Foreign Affairs Motorsport located in pompano Florida charges $6200 installed.
Around 1200 to 1500 if you go with an independent mechanic. Join an m flight group

Because garages can’t afford them. These guys usually work At dealers and go through specialized training each year.

IsraeliPilot I can tell you privately but I’d rather not say it publicly on the farm because the price could change and I don’t want to solidify anything. I can tell you that I reached out to four different shops and this one was by far the cheapest

I would think the solid one piece crank hub is better than the keyed one🤷🏻♂️
They are for the most part the same, the issue is with the installation. A two piece crank hub is a lot easier to replace than a single piece

As a percentage of modified M3/M4's out there, how many have spun the crank hub to the point where it's caused more damage than this fix costs? There are thousands of modified cars out there, and I've only heard of a handful of those that have spun the crank hubs - and all of those have been early cars (2014/15/16).. Is there any evidence that this is even a widespread problem?
Yes and no but the fact that I personally know people who have spun their hubs speaks volumes.
@@TommyLGarage Thanks for your reply :) Equally however, I personally know around a dozen modified F8x cars (600+ hp) who haven't. I'm not putting down the fix, I'm just trying to decide if the 'risk' is worth the extremely high cost of the fix - especially on my 2018 car (where I've yet to see anyone spin a crank hub, anywhere on any forum I'm on).
It's like insuring against a meteor strike to your house I guess. I mean, it *could* happen... :)
@@Just-Ross Before buying an M4 I researched this thoroughly, and my understanding is that it is an absolute non-issue. And if you are under warranty, there is absolutely no worries regarding the crank hub (possibly less than 1% of all F8x cars. I think most of the scare is derived from past issues on M3's with subframe, rod bearings, etc.
Savage Patch Kids much appreciated. This was certainly the gut feeling I was starting to get. Several people “know someone who knows someone who’s mate it happened to” but as a percentage of cars out there on the forums and so on, there’s only been one or two reported cases. All on high mile, early cars.

I love BMW's but typical BMW won't fix their own widespread issues similar to the known valve carbon buildup on the N55.

@@kuervers03 No I wouldn't either. The carbon buildup issue was greater then that on the N55 if you just look up on the forums it's yet to be seen the extent of the crank hub issue but seems to be growing

It happened to me, so its been very real.
Me, BluesCluesM3, AryanM3, Blake'sGarage and his m4. You can take the risk but the price to pay when you lose the bet is your motor.
The crank hub issue is over hyped. Yes if you are going to do stage 3+ tune then maybe but there are no issues. Lots of garages spreading the rumours to scare people to get the upgrade.
I know a few people who had this issue. One fun spun his a day before he was supposed to get an upgrade
