  • On our last few nights of our month long stay in Chiang Mai, Thailand (with Mandy's grandmother who came to visit us!), we attended the famous, amazing, chaotic, beautiful madness that is most generally called “the Chiang Mai lantern festival.” This is a celebration of both the Yi Peng and Loi Krathong holidays, where thousands of sky lanterns are lit on fire and sent off into the sky and thousands of water lanterns are sent floating down the Ping river. The celebrations take place on the full moon of the twelfth month of the Thai lunar calendar, and as you’ll see, it is an event unlike any other you’ve seen before!
Note, this was filmed prior to COVID-19. Stay safe!

It looks very busy and crowded and it looked like you were enduring it about the same as you enjoyed it but visually it looks beautiful. There's something about watching lanterns floating up into the sky that is really cool and seeing thousands of them was quite a sight. I'm sure there'd have been some specific vantage points to enjoy the sights that would have looked incredible.

Hope you visit to the Philippines SOON after this global pandemic (Covid-19)There's a lot of beautiful places that you've been too and a lot of prestine beaches and crystal clear water.

For poor and the less unfortunate to pick up the offering money is very OK. It is like the donation anyway.

I want to state my relationship with Thailand. I have twelve uncles and aunties living there and one uncle of mine was in the seventies the mayor of Haadyai. But the Thais need to come into the Twenty First Century and give up this pretence about praying to Buddha. Buddha did not proclaimed a religion but a lifestyle to respect other living beings and also nature. How it has been captured to be turned into a religion is a perversion of his beliefs. The whole situation is fraught with danger due to the lantern bursting into flames and burning those who were wearing inflammable clothing. It can also burn the buildings where it landed down. Total chaos and danger. How this can be allowed to persist in the name of religion is beyond me. If the Thais devote as much time praying to Buddha as to learning how to govern themselves, Thailand can be an emerging superpower. Alas coupled with their poor education system and the refusal to adopt the lingua franca of the world they are always going to be subject to military coups and inward looking rulers. They must come into the Twenty First Century by casting aside the pretence of Buddhist observance and learn English so that they can trade and deal with the outside world. Alas I hope the recent protests can lead to a meaningful change in their country, a country I have ties and deep love for.
