  • The song 'Runs in The Family' by Amanda Palmer.
This song can be found on her debut solo album 'Who killed Amanda Palmer?'
    Amanda's Official Website;
    www.whokilledam...
    Amanda's RUclips;
    / amandapalmer
Seeing as though there weren't many lyric videos on RUclips of Amanda's songs, I decided to make my own. I took the idea of how the lyrics are set up from wingedzephyr's Emilie Autumn lyric videos.
You can find her channel here; / wingedzephyr
I apologize for the many errors I've made in this video...I was very tired when I put it together.
    I hope you enjoy regardless.

She actually breathes in this song by recording two versions of her singing it, and taking a breath in one track, and then the other.

After training for six months straight, I finally managed to sing the full song at the same rate as Amanda. Though I do take more breaths and mumble sometimes, it does make sense. Amanda stated in a interview that it is impossible to sing the song at the same pace. Because the human body cannot exhale for that long. So they did edit and merge the song a large amount in the studio when recording.

"this song is almost impossible to sing live. in fact it IS impossible to sing live. i have to edit out words. if you listen to a live recording, you'll notice that certain phrases get contracted and certain words get dropped. it is a necessity, this song is literally not singable the way it wound up on the actual record" - From Amanda's Bandcamp

I feel like this is more about how addiction or mental illnesses run in families... and the family just blames you for what you got even though some of them have it to, and instead of trying to help you they try to shut you up about it so you don't make them look bad... (& maybe b/c that's how they were previously taught to treat their own illness/addiction)
that's how i relate to it anyways

    • @amberdockhorn5069

coke bloke that's how I feel too. as soon as my grandparents found out I had really bad anxiety, (even though they know I got my illnesses from my mother) they said "and who's fault is that?" directly implying that it was mine.

    • @professthesidekick
      @professthesidekick 7 лет назад +87

that sucks, cause it definitely isn't your fault... some people don't realize that illnesses & addictions literally run in dna patterns passed down in genes from your family members lol

I may not be able to 100% relate to this song like some people, but as a person who's had undiagnosed fibromyalgia my whole life, the line "if wellness is this, what in hell's name is sickness?" really hits hard.
I remember telling my parents that my bones hurt, and crying when they told me I was lying. teachers used to shout at me for not "trying my best" and kids would make fun of me for not being able to run far. I grew up believing that everyone felt a constant pain in certain parts of their body, and that I was just a coward for not being able to do things despite of it. I thought I never got sick or injured because I couldn't tell the difference between that and a flare up.
"don't tell my family, they'd never forgive me, they'd say that I'm cr-zy, but they would say anything if it would shut me up."

Hey! I made this to help people know when to breathe, coming at you from your local choir kid. Also, it would really help if you learned circular breathing- look it up! Also if there are any pauses where you can breathe or you miss a mark, don't treat this as law. This is just to help.
    (DEEP breath)
My friend has problems with winter and autumn
    They give him prescriptions,
(There's a short pause here, take a shallow breath)
They shine bright lights on him
    They say it's genetic,
They say he can't help it
They say you can catch it
But sometimes you're born with it
    (another shallow, slightly deeper breath)
    My friend has blight
he gets shakes in the night
And they say there is no way
That they could have caught it and
    (very shallow breath)
Time takes its toll on him, it is traditional
    It is inherited, predispositional
    (Shallow, deeper breath)
    All day I've been wondering
    What is inside of me,
Who can I blame for it?
(very shallow, breathe AS you start singing)
    I say
    It runs in the family,
    this famine that carries me
    To such great lengths
    To open my legs
Up to anyone who'll have me
(very shallow, mix breath with words)
    It runs in the family,
    I come by it honestly
    Do what you want
    'Cause who knows
(you can take incredibly short breaths between the fill me ups)
It might fill me up [echoes]
    (breathe)
    Fill me up [echoes]
    (deeper breath if you can)
    My friend's depressed,
    She's a wreck, she's a mess
They've done all sorts of tests and
They guess it has something to do
    With her grandmother's grandfather's grandmother
    (Breath, mix it with words)
    Civil war soldiers who
    Badly infected her
(Deeper breath, still make it quick)
My friend has maladies, rickets, and allergies
That she dates back to the 17th century (quick breath, mix with somehow)
Somehow she manages, (there's a pause here, breathe) in her misery -
    Strips in the city
And shares all her best tricks with
    Me?
    Well, I'm well.
Well, I mean I'm in hell.
Well, I still have my health
(Take a SUPER short breath here)
At least that's what they tell me
If wellness is this, what in hell's name is sickness?
    But business is business!
    And business
Runs in the family, we tend to bruise easily (short breath)
Bad in the blood, I'm telling you 'cause
I just want you to know me (short breath)
    Know me and my family
    We're wonderful folks but
Don't get too close to me
(Take a series of shorter breaths between the me ups as necessary, DONT MAKE YOURSELF HYPERVENTILATE)
'Cause you might knock me up [echoes]
    Knock me up [echoes]
(Deepest breath you can take while staying in time)
    Mary have mercy,
    Now look what I've done
    But don't blame me because
I can't help where I come from (short breath, lead into the and)
And running is something that we've always done
Well and mostly I can't even tell what I'm running from
    Run from their pity
    (Short breath)
    From responsibility
    Run from the country
    (Short breath)
    And run from the city
I can run from the law
    I can run from myself
    (Short breath)
I can run for my life
    I can run into debt
I can run from it all
I can run till I'm gone
I can run for the office
(Short breath, be very quick with these)
    And run from the 'cause
    I can run using every
    Last ounce of energy
    I cannot
    I cannot
    (Short, quick breath)
    I cannot
    Run from my family
    They're hiding inside me
    Corpses on ice
    (Short breath)
    Come in if you'd like
But just don't tell my family
    They'd never forgive me
    They say that I'm crazy
    But they would say anything
If it would shut me up
(Deepest breath you can quietly take)
    Shut me up
(Another breath, remember not to hyperventilate)
    Shut me up [echoes]
(Breathe QUICKLY AND SHORTLY between shut me ups as necessarily)
    Shut me up [echoes]
    Hopefully this helps! Good luck.

Honestly it's a hell of a challenge to take on. The studio version makes it sound easy because it's easy to splice separate takes to sound like she's just going on and on and on and on without a breath, but when you hear a live version you can hear her picking specific spaces to drop half-lines for breath-
For example: "Time takes its toll on him *breathe* it's traditional, It is inherited pre-disposition, all day I've been wondering *breathe* what's inside of me..." etc. Shit's precise. Love it C:

I can sing all of this song without Missing a word, you have to stager your breath and just time when your going to take a breath. You can hear where she does but if you can't try taking one quickly on a small pause or inhale at the beginning during the first word. I find getting into character also hells a little bit that's just me. I've been working on this for a while it's really hard

So we are just going to ignore how she starts talking about genetics, but when she wonders what she inherited, all she can think is about the "family business". This business being prostitution. We just gonna ignore that? Ok. Coolio.

    • @novaisonyoutube
      @novaisonyoutube 7 лет назад +535

I've noticed this. I think the song is about a girl trying to equate her family prostituting her out as their family did before to her friends having mental illnesses because previous family members had the same mental illnesses. She thinks that prostitution is something that's in her blood, rather than something her family forced upon her.

    • @SymonSighs
      @SymonSighs 6 лет назад +268

I've always seen that as a reference to the fact people are always being judged by who their family is, that who they are personally is overwritten by who their blood is. Like how you grow up constantly being told who you look like in the family, who you act like, ect. And also how people always say stuff like "Oh yeah, I have (Insert a non-hereditary problem), it runs in my family" as an excuse or whatnot. And saying that because she's part of her family, she's destined to follow their footsteps, hence the "family business" because they see her as a mini-me, before they consider her an individual.

Alyx Nightshade I kind of thought is was more of a "no one will love you, so when someone comes along you need to snag them before they leave" kind of feel. I do like your take though!

    • @mirrepoix
      @mirrepoix 6 лет назад +168

not sure why you assume it has to do with prostitution. she blames her family for the fact that she takes solace and comfort in whoever is willing to fuck her ("this family that carries me to such great lengths to open my legs up for ANYONE WHO'LL HAVE ME" note the capitalized words specifically) - sexual promiscuity is common behavior in people who are mentally ill or have experienced trauma, and is part of diagnostic criteria for a great many mental disorders. this makes her miserable, but she allows it regardless as she's craving any sort of intimacy even if it's not real ("do what you want - who knows, it might fill me up"). the family "business" is trauma/abuse and instability.

    • @spazzyjazzy3361
      @spazzyjazzy3361 6 лет назад +34

Lol ig I looked at it much simpler... I thought more of it like the women before her were given off to the "right gentleman" always depending on the right kinda dowry, like land and money to the parents, and the more land and money and the better status the man had the better. So I just thought she was saying "am I destined to go down the same path the women before me have just because it's the 'family business?'"

This reminds me of the slew of health problems I've inherited. I've got scoliosis (my spine is crooked and is almost bad enough I need a back brace), ADHD, type one diabetes, mild addiction to caffeine and overeating, depression, horrid anxiety, and a few more problems that I can neither spell nor pronounce. Here's hoping that I don't inherit my family's heart problems.
(Edit) My health has only gotten worse with the passing of time. It turns out my family has so many hereditary medical issues I decided to list all of them so that I can get tested for them at my next doctors visit because I already have eight or nine officially diagnosed ones and I figure with my luck I have at least five more that I don't know about yet. I only started the list yesterday and it already has over thirty things listed on it, and that's with listing closely related issues like scoliosis and chiphosis, ADHD and ADD, etc under the same bullet point. And that's only the things my mom and myself can remember, and mostly her side of the family, we haven't scratched the surface of the hereditary medical issues on my fathers side of the family. What's worse is there's some really nasty shit that runs in my family, sure we've got stuff like anxiety and depression, high blood pressure, asthma, addiction, fallen arches and an extra bone in our feet. But we've also got stuff like autism, cervical cancer, degenerative disk/joint disease, both types of diabetes, early onset Alzheimer's, heart disease, hemochromatosis, macular degeneration, multiple sclerosis, and my older sister made medical journals at nine years old as being the youngest person ever diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Not to mention that there are at least two bonafide psychopaths on my dads side of the family and I suspect several sociopaths on my mothers side, hard to tell with the sociopaths tho because one of the signs of being one is being very good at manipulating people and having them perceive you any way you want.
And my family wonders why I don't want kids, I don't want to pass on all this bullshit I have in my genetic code.
TLDR: genetics got me fucked up and I relate to this song very strongly because of that. It's a good thing I've got my looks because my insides are all kinds of screwed up on several levels.

god. this song hits so different for people with genetic chronic illness. for me its mental health. i have a father with agoraphobia depression alchoholism and severe anxiety who was for a number of reasons a horrible parents. on his side of the family basically everyone has severe depression, anxiety, and/or delibitating adhd to the point of nonfunction. theres an incredibly particular trauma that comes from inheretted mental illness, the same illness you watched eat people who you once loved alive or that caused them to hurt you - sickness you can't run from.
this song hits especially hard because me and my father both run from our problems. i think ive developed AVPD somewhere along the way. im very good at running from things. my biggest fear is turning into my father, unfortunately i have nearly every disorder that he has and predispositions for the ones i dont yet.

My friend has problems with Winter and Autumn
    They give him prescriptions
They shine bright lights on him
They say it’s genetic they say he can’t help they say you can catch it but sometimes you’re born with it
My friend has spite He gets shakes in the night and they say that there’s no way that he could have caught it
And time takes it’s toll on him
    It is traditional
    It is inherited
    Predispositional
All day I’ve been wondering what is inside of me
Who can I blame for it?
I say it runs in the family
This family that carries me to such great lengths
to open my legs up to anyone who’ll have me
    It runs in the family
    I come by in honesty
Do what you want, ‘cause who knows it might fill me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Fill me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
My friends depressed she a wreck,
    she’s a mess
They’ve done all sorts of tests
And they guess it has something to do with
    Her grandmothers
    Grandfathers
    Grandmothers
    Saving civil war soldiers
    who probably infected her
    My friend has Maladies
    Rickets
    And Allergies
That she dates back to the 17th century
    Somehow she manages
    In her misery
Strips in the city and shows all her best tricks
    With me, well I’m well
Well, I mean I’m in hell
Well, I still have my health,
Atleast that’s what they tell me.
If wellness is this, what in hell’s name is sickness?
    But business is business
And business runs in the family
    We tend to bruise easily
    Mad in the blood,
I’m telling you cause I just want you to know me!
    Know me and my family,
We’re wonderful folks but don’t to close to me cause you might knock me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Knock me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Mary, have mercy
    Now look what I’ve done
But don’t blame because I can’t help where I come from
And running is something that we’ve always done well
And mostly I can’t even tell what I’m running from
    From the pity
    From responsibility
    Run from the country
    And run from the city
I can run from the law
    I can run from myself
I can run from my life
    I can run into debt
I can run from it all.
I can run till I’m gone.
I can run for the office.
    And run for the cause.
I can run using every last ounce of energy.
    I cannot
    I cannot
    I cannot
I cannot run from my family
    They’re hiding inside of me,
    Corpses in ice
Come in if you like, just don’t tell my family
    They’d never forgive me
    They say that I’m crazy
But they would say anything if it would shut me up,
    Shut me up
    Shut me up,
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Shut me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up
    Me up.
Sorry for any mistakes I’ll correct them in the morning.

And after she passed away I started hearing stuff and seeing stuff and that mental illness can be passed down in the family and...

This song just reminds so much of the Joestars from jojo's bizarre adventure.
Their secret family technique is legit running away.
Jonathan, had a cruel life until he died.
Jospeh, grew up without a father and started the joestar running technique, lost his best friend.
Jotaro, lost all of his friends due to dio and diavolo. Got ptsd from the experience. Had to get divorce and leave his child bc it was too dangerous for his family.
Josuke, grew up without a father and had to pretty much help his mom in every way he can.
Giorno, dad died from jotaro, mom neglected him while his step dad abused him, shook at night as he bit his nail as a baby and never cried ever again.
Jolyne, jotaro left her without giving a reason, and so she would commit crimes to get his attention. She ran away from the law and has to face pucci as the world was resetting.
Johnny, brother died and his father never saw him as a son, became disabled, running away from the country bc the president was going after corpses, lost his closet friend to the president, and died to save his son.
Havent read to far in part 8 but
Gappy, trying to figure out where he came from

Hi everyone. English is not my first language, I live in Europe. My mom has depression problems and she stopped the meds a while ago. My dad died when I was 2 yo and he was a very messy person. My mom really loves me, she is extremely kind to me but she doesn't manage her anger well. I'm very untidy (my room is a real mess) and this makes her angry bc it remembers her of my dad. We were fighting because I never wear a skirt that she bought me and because I wore a black winter handbag some weeks ago, and then she took my bag and emptied it on my floor, and kicked it. Then she started berating me because I'm just as messy as my dad was and she says that she doesn't want to fight the same battles with me, so I need to be tidier. She kept berating me about that and I told her that I will not take my dad's faults. I began to repeat a lot of time a sentence that she uses with me ( she says that it's not my fault for making her angry, im just the Last drop that makes the vase overflow) and raised her hands (im 23, she last hit me like 3 years ago) over me, so I grabbed them. She pinned me to a wall, then pressed a towel on my mouth to silence me, telling me that she just had to close the window so the neighborhood wouldn't hear me screaming. I began to cry and I told her that I couldn't breath (not true, I could, just it was difficult while crying and gasping. Then I calmed down and we both agreeded that we are nervous because of our jobs (she has a very Shitty job with very bad coworkers). She helps me with everything, from school to money, and she is a great parent otherwise. Her life is very crappy. Was this domestic violence?

Sorry, english is not my first language.
My family handle anger in awful ways. A therapist mentioned "transfert" about my gma. They must make someone suffer when they are down. I'm also like that even if I'm in therapy because I know that it's very wrong to do it. I'm trying to be better and I love my family just as much as like they love me but the less they see each other the better it is.
    This song is amazing

    1, 2, 3, 4
My friend has problems with winter and autumn
They give him prescriptions, they shine bright lights on him
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it
They say you can catch it, but sometimes you're born with it
My friend has spite, he gets shakes in the night
And they say that there's no way that they could have caught it in time
    Takes his toll on him
It is traditional, it is inherited, predispositional
All day I've been wondering what is inside of me
Who can I blame for it? I say it runs in the family
This family that carries me to such great lengths
To open my legs up to anyone who'll have me
It runs in the family, I come by it honestly
Do what you want 'cause who knows it might fill me up
    Me up
    Fill me up
    Me up
    My friend's depressed, she's a wreck, she's a mess
They've done all sorts of tests and they guess
It has something to do with her grandmother's
Grandfather's grandmother saving civil war soldiers
    Who probably infected her
My friend has maladies, rickets, and allergies
That she dates back to the 17th century
Somehow she manages in her misery
Strips in the city and shows all her best tricks
With me, well, I'm well, well I mean I'm in Hell, well
I still have my health, at least that's what they tell me
If wellness is this, what in Hell's name is sickness?
But business is business and business runs in the family
We tend to bruise easily, mad in the blood
I'm telling you 'cause I just want you to know me
Know me and my family, we're wonderful folks
But don't get to close to me 'cause you might knock me up
    Me up
    Knock me up
    Me up
Mary, have mercy, now look what I've done
But don't blame me because I can't help where I come from
And running is something that we've always done well
And mostly I can't even tell what I'm running from
Run from their pity, from responsibility
Run from the country and run from the city
I can run from the law, I can run from myself
I can run from my life, I can run into debt
I can run from it all, I can run 'til I'm gone
I can run for the office and run for my cause
I can run using every last ounce of energy
I cannot, I cannot, I cannot run from my family
They're hiding inside of me, corpses on ice
Come in if you like but just don't tell my family
They'd never forgive me, they'd say that I'm crazy
But they would say anything if it would shut me up
    Shut me up
    Me up
    Shut me up
    Me up

I'm sorry but I'm waiting for someone to notice the hidden meaning to these lyrics.
Well I mean it is blatant but what does she mean when she says who her family opens her legs to anyone who will have her and how nobody show know her closely or else they'll knock her up(get pregnant)?

    • @namelesswolf2625

I always interpreted it as promiscuity as a result of depression, which is a mental illness that runs in her family.

      long story short:
Amanda talks about people suffering from depression to which they blame ridiculous like his grandfather's grandmother's grandfather is the cause of his depression? Therapists complicate things and search in places where it wouldn't make any sense rather than actually help. Amanda says she'll open up her legs to anyone, thinking that if she lets them have sex with her, she would finally find love, as she has never really been taught by her family what clove even is. Expecting sex the lead to love when usually most of the time it means the oppisite if you do it straight away. Which is why she warns peopel to stay away from her or they may 'knock her up' because she will think you'll accept her and she'd be reluctant for you to fuck her. To which she blames her family for being like this

Her family business is prostitution and so it has been passed down to her. And yeah, she said nobody should get to close because they might get her pregnant. Hope I helped :)

Emily Moyer I thought it was just about BPD or Histrionic Personality Disorder (of which I have the former) because the symptoms include promiscuity.

I've been learning to sing this song (and I'm pretty good) but I've always listened to this without headphones. Last week at school, I wore headphones and noticed a girl screaming in the background at 2:07 (or at least that's what it sounds like to me)
