It's for drying old gut line so it didn't rot you couldn't leave it on the reel the days befor mono line

Yup, a line dryer, could also be for silk line, which required drying or it might rot.

That is so much fun opening a box like that, it just makes it feel like Christmas for us older guys. I just became owner of two pflueger's 1988 Capitol with boxes, every time I get my hands of an old vintage equipment I think about the history of where that item came and who might have used it. Thanks you for your take on your new find.

I love these videos showing old reels. I have the same Pflueger reel that you showed at the end of your video. I also have an old Ocean City reel (model# 112c), both were used in the 40's & 50's by my dad.

I'd hazard a guess that the rig with the wire leaders shown at 10:50 was probably used for bluefish in the surf. There was a similar rig sold in tackle shops and used for stripers in NJ in the 60's known as a doodle bug with a red and white painted cork used to keep the bait off the bottom. It had mono leaders which bluefish could easily bite off. Serious shark fishermen were few in numbers back then but would have used multistrand wire for a leader which would be less likely to kink and probably a much bigger hook.

I think this makes the most sense. I believe my granddad loved to bluefish out of VA Beach!

The spring-loaded thing with a c clamp on it is a below surface trap for stuff like beavers.

    That gear, is for KINGFISH.
    King Mackerel.
It all makes sense, the drone spoons are for Spanish Macks, the small stuff is for catching bait, but the main gear is ALL big KING gear.

My guess on the spring thing at 6:8 is some kind of reel that is attached to the side of the boat. Perhaps used like a handline reel that gives spring assist when reeling in a fish. (?)

May 1963 date (563) for that Akron box. True Blue dates to 1937. Flip the Capital box for its date.

I think the item with the little C clamp on it is a device for winding up a hand line.
