Brilliant film and analysis! It is always a pleasure to find channels such as yours which are interested to keep the Indian and Global art cinema movement alive. Its good you managed to make sense of the plot of the movie. Me, I was too entranced by its cinematography and sounds to even care that there was a narrative. Overall, I think this film is all of the 'art and nature wallah' and 'short-film' Dutta culminated in 90 minutes of what maybe his best work yet.
This film won't leave my mind, sometimes I wake up and a random scene from this film are playing in my head. It's the atmosphere that the filmmakers create which has a long lasting impact just like Nainsukh's art. Great analysis, this made me look at the film in a different way. I hope you get success 🔥
Love how you have read the film! But there were a few things which came to my mind when I was listening to what you said. 1. The very act of you getting up at 6 am and watching the film was something which I feel Amit Dutta might have done himself with paintings. There is a sense of freshness in the frames, new beginnings. Just like you had one :) 2. Pahari style paintings were done by a lot of artists before Nainsukh under the tutelage of Raj Kirpal Pal and yes they were very much accommodative to all the religions fluorishing in the Indian subcontinent. 3. The Devi here I felt is symbolic. It could be Kings under whose patronage all these artists worked. Because often Monarchs are said to have a part of God/divinity in them. 4. The Hunt which is staged in the movie could be telling us that it was actually staged. Why? Because this is the style that Amit often picks up while storytelling. He serves viewers the truth, the as it is of the situation. The scene where you talk about the symmetry of Nainsukh's behaviour contrasting with the asymmetrical of the people is one such incident. Also, the staging of events, while they were being painted, was very common during that time because it was difficult to have as many visual references as we do nowadays. Even Margaret Bourke-White took a lot of staged photographs for Life Magazine. These are just some of my thoughts. But how you have reviewed the film is of course wonderful :)

I agree, Amit Dutta ends up creating a valuable experience over and above just a movie plot. He challenges what cinema, especially in India, means.
