  • Fincantieri won the competition for the U.S. Navy future frigate known as FFG(X). In this video, Washington DC-based naval commentator Chris Cavas explains the Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) shipyard expansion plan to support the FFG(X) production.
    =====================
    (Video recorded during the Surface Navy Association's 2020 National Symposium in January 2020).
    Fincantieri was awarded a $795 mil US Navy contract for detail design & construction of the first ship at its Marinette shipyard in Wisconsin. Options for up to 10 ships could make the contract worth up to $5.6 billion. Fincantieri was competing with a frigate design based on the Italian Navy's FREMM frigate.
    The shipyard, currently producing Freedom-class LCS, will need some modifications in order to be able to produce the future frigate. Chris Cavas explains what the expansion plans consist in.

    The Navy would have several FFG's at sea right now had they not fooled around with LCS. And, FFG in name only. These things are small destroyers.

    I wonder if the plans for shipyard expansion helped seal the deal on the project, so to speak; I hadn't seen any details from any of the other builders on their proposals, although I suppose they already have shipyards capable of constructing ships of that size.

    Am I the only one who thinks the FREMM based winner looks more like the Alvaro De Bazan class than a FREMM ? Cant argue with the choice though - I wonder if the Helge Ingstad disaster had any bearing in the final choice.Maybe there is an opening for a Type 26 order for the second batch of 10 too.

      Paul Tanton Thats because it shares the same Radar Mast set up, around a Spy family Radar , a very similar bow and it is about 6-7m longer

      I would like think that USA Navy would consider T26 but USA would want to all T26 operating n with no problems before building T26. Although I hope history is not repeating itself again? Australian Navy had British warships before RAN decided go for US Charles F. Adams class, there’s 3 part vids by UNSW Canberra RUclips channel discussing the challenges buying n operating US over British warships.

      @@jamieshields9521 part of it is just the difference in how the US and Britain design and build warships. The RAN used quite a few US designs until recent and I bet that had more to do with cost and the US purchasing process.

      There were several US companies that got a chance first and they were Expensive Failures. I believe the ship will be built in the US. Good job Italy.

    Terrible pick, the F100 was superior in every way and it would have needed way less redesign as its already designed for the SPY radar and for American weapons and combat systems. The FREMM needs nearly $800 million just in redesign costs. How they're going to design and build it for $1.3 billion for a first in class ship is a mystry. Think about it 800 mill in design money leaves only 500 mill for actual construction, those numbers are upside down. The first in class FFG(x) is going to cost about 800-900 million to construct without the design costs. And the FREMM because of all the redesign work that needs be done, will lose its stealthy capabilities and the SPY radar on the FREMM is only going to have 3 SPY-6 radar arrays instead of 4 like its supposed to have for max performance. Only the decision to build the LCS was a worse decision than this FFG(x) decision.

      I agree that the F100 was probably the cheaper option. Some people say that the sinking of Helge Ingstad (which is based off of F100) impacted the chances of the design.
      Though seeing as how extensive the changes are to the FREMM anyways, I dont see why similar changes could have been applied to F100.

    • @marcofava
      @marcofava 4 года назад +6

      Not really, the F100 design from Navantia is a pretty static design with little future upgradability while FREEM was designed exactly to be future proof.
      Also as many have pointed out the sinking of the Norwegian ship did highlight glaring flaws in the F100 design which basically sunk it's chances in the competition.
      Also the version chosen as the basis of the US Navy ship is the Italian General Purpose version which is in essence a mini Destroyer as at full load it displaces some 500 tonnes less than a Horizon Class Destroyer with very similar fire power.

      Yea by now I do not understand why US taxpayers just pile up all those USD and set fire to it. Just as practical really.
      For the millions you talk of? I'd build an entire fleet in my backyard.
      With better hull designs, better radar and superior stealth capabilities.
      Which made US ONR teams here go ... Hell yea let's do that! Course we gave them the finger, lol!

    We should never buy foreign made ships for our navy. Should be illegal. Let American companies only compete. We should build our own ships and just foster an atmosphere to promote more US shipbuilding to keep it competitive. We as a nation can supply our own needs militarily.

      I guess the countries that buy weapons from US should do the same like you and never buy again your weapons right? And lose in the process a large part of your GDP income, I bet you wouldn't like that.
