Luang Phor Koon was an ordinary monk and had not attained arahantship. However he made a lot of contributions to both Thailand and Malaysia. He always smoked a cigar and well known for his charity work especially in Langkawi Island where it goes to the Malaysian fund. He was a disciple of LP Waen studied and practiced at Wat Changhai, Wat Rakang and Wat Pak Kiaw. He was short and skinny and always got bullied when he was younger.
When Luang Phor Koon (Wat Ban Rai) was a young monk, he had a dream of walking on the moon and meeting two angels; one represented the sun and the other represented the moon. They told him to have compassion for all suffering beings and to be ambitious as he was destined for great things.
Later, he went to learn from Luang Phor Kai of Wat Phra Kaeo. Based on Luang Phor Kai’s advice, he subsequently raised funds by making pendants and giving Feng Shui consultations. The angels from the sun and moon appeared to bless the pendants made by him and taught him to perform miracles, transfer merits, foster relationships and pay respect to all . From then on he became the richest monk. An army officer wearing his pendant was shot by assassins but did not get hurt at all. Because of this, his pendants became very popular, and he managed to raise a lot of funds.
During the Asian financial crisis, Luang Phor Koon undertook an initiative to payoff Thailand’s debt to the World Bank. With Thaksin’s help, he asked his followers to donate gold to him and every donor was given proper written acknowledgement of the gold contributed. They were free to take back the gold in the future if they wished to. The gold collected were smelted into ingots and embossed with the insignia of Luang Phor Koon. When the price of gold soared, the gold was sold to settle all the debt owing to the World Bank thereby freeing Thailand from the IMF control. Thus after this incident the people truly respected him.
