Kunst tussen de ruïnes - Teaser

In het onderzoek ‘Kunst tussen de ruïnes’ staat het Rotterdamse kunstleven tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog centraal. Hoe verliep hun leven in nasleep van het bombardement van 14 mei 1940? Voor welke onmogelijke keuzes kwamen zij te staan? In Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is kunst uit de collectie te zien die in die periode gemaakt werd of een andere connectie met de bezettingsjaren kent. Kern van het onderzoek is het boek De vuurvogelgeneratie. Kunstenaars in een verwoeste stad van kunsthistoricus en gastconservator Sandra Smets. Hierin beschrijft ze het leven van een tiental kunstenaars tijdens de oorlog in Rotterdam.
Naast een presentatie met werk uit de museumcollectie en een boek realiseert het museum een online, interactieve kaart. Hierop staan vele historisch relevante punten, plaatsen en gebouwen die een rol spelen in de kunstwereld in Rotterdam tijdens de bezettingsjaren. Wat is er nog over? Wat valt er nog te zien?

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents the research project ‘Art Amid the Ruins’ about artists in Rotterdam during the Second World War. How were their lives affected by the bombing of 14 May 1940? What impossible choices did they face? The exhibition in Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen features artworks from the collection that were made during the period or that have a connection with the occupation.
The core of this project is the book The Firebird Generation: Artists in a Destroyed City, in which art historian and guest curator Sandra Smets delves into the lives of ten artists and art world figures in Rotterdam during the occupation.
In addition to the exhibition and book, the museum is launching an online interactive map of historically relevant places and buildings that played a role in the art world in Rotterdam during the occupation years. How many of them remain and what can still be seen?
