I have a Mantis named Coleslaw. He is the best pet ever, and I just had a June bug that I kept die. I wanted to remember him, so I looked up some things I could do to preserve him. I then started to look for some ways to preserve Coleslaw. This is disgraceful. Mantid are such fascinating creatures and you kill one to frame it. At least when Coleslaw dies I can remember him.
i'm sitting watching this with my pet praying mantis, Lavender, dying on my hand after suddenly getting sick for unknown reasons. a healthy mantis being roughly captured and killed unnecessarily was not what i wanted to see 😥
You haven’t pinned this correctly, its wings are still closed. You should pin through the thorax so that you can open the wings for better identification.
For everyone hating on this guy for killing an insect, keep in mind he's just trying to help out students who have to do this project, using these methods, waiting for it to die isn't really an option when you have a time limit and also need to worry about identifying, labelling and displaying them. I know it's cruel but it's something I'm sure a lot of people would have to do for their degree.
And it’s good for the earth like hunting people hunt to control the population and when there are Time between deer seasons and other seasons is for them to repopulate
@@Snappyizalsokool fair enough if that's the criticism. This is more directed at people saying, he's being cruel. I needed some kinda of guidance for my assignment and this helped. Still got s crap mark but that's more because I was crap at identifying specific species.
Stopped watching at pinning the mantis. You killed him to frame him. No thanks. I found my dragonfly, already dead. I want the help of someone who is not deliberately killing a beautiful little creature for display.
Ashley Marie Mayle Child of God- JESUS Christ I know he killed it. The original comment said he killed it with the pin. It was already dead prior to pinning.
usually when you keep insects they dont get damaged....i am a mantis breeder and have worked with many insects and also you places the primary pin in the wrong part of the mantis..should be placed right below the neck
very informative tutorial. This is one of the few (in fact , the only video) tutorials i could find on youtube on how to pin and fix a praying mantis. However, i found a few flaws in this video tutorial that i find worth mentioning. First, through extensive reading, i found out that alcohol(surgical spirit) is not a good choice for euthanizing. It tends to make the joints of the insect hard and stiff. The No.1 choice for euthanizing is Ethyl acetate. It euthanizes the insect more faster and does not harden it. It remains soft even after death. This is a vital criteria for post death processing and pinning. Second, the pinning location is wrong. The pin should be inserted through the centre of the thorax. Third, i am seriously doubtful about how you stored the insect for drying. If your drying process(enclosing it in a closed box) was followed by someone from a tropical country with high levels of humidity, he/she would have wound up with a peutrified specimen covered with fungal molds. You, however accomplished in drying it successfully without any fungal infestation, which is actually a surprise in itself. I would rather have recommended keeping the insect in the open with access to warm, dry air, which would speed up the drying without exposing it to any risk of fungal damage to the specimen. And lastly, this is more of a recommendation rather than a pointing out of a flaw. It would have been much more visually appealing as well as scientifically/taxonomically helpful had you spread the wings as well. That would highlight especially the hind wing pattern more elaborately, both for aesthetics and for scientific studies(if at all you were preserving this insect for education purposes) All in all , it was a good tutorial though. All the best in your future works. Btw, i am an amateur collector of biological specimens, especially insects. Connect with me here ruclips.net/channel/UCo9-Oyz4SCyyQTP4LZ7Yr-Q
I dont know, usually you go in the forest and search for dead insects and then make sure they are dead because some lega might still move, but this one was still clearly alive...
You really just killed a perfectly healthy and fine insect just to what frame it? Why don’t you find one that’s already passed away so when you frame it you see it’s beauty not something you killed just to frame and you didn’t even frame it well or pose it to its best I mean it would look much more pretty if you spread out the wings but still that’s not the point you shouldn’t kill a beautiful insect just frame it
Is not that finding insects is really easy, not even trying to find a Praying mantis in wildlife even more difficult to find it dead, yeah im agree that he did not did the best of the job displaying the mantis, but what did you thinked how insect taxidermy works? You have to kill the insect no matter what
insects actually don't have cent ran nervous systems advanced enough to feel pain if you were to pull the leg off a grasshopper the leg would try to walk away like nothing happened the grasshopper would take the same heed
Guys... I collect bugs put i usually freeze them, BUT... I only collect bugs like Beetles, Mostitoues (idk how to spell it) and drangonflies. thats pretty much it.
SMAK comedy No, if you want an insect that is in good condition, you need to kill it while it is fresh. Waiting until an Insect dies will leave it with scratches and small tears. Nothing weird about killing Insects, it's part of the process.
Do not kill for preservation the real preservation is to keep them alive and let them breed in their natural habitat. innocent mentis. we don't need videos like this if you kill only for demonstration.
Some of these comments are just so ignorant. How lucky we'd be as biological science students to find some amazing creatures already dead and ready for us to collect. As a student currently undergoing an assignment on capturing, preserving and pinning invertebrates it's not ideally a first choice or general love of ours to capture and kill these animals. The only reason why we are able to collect insects is because of the massive diversity and numbers of (most) invertebrate life. Sadly, I personally hate killing these animals but it is for further research and learning purposes. What difference is it to have someone else kill a cow for you to eat it? I'm sure you hate the idea of it but most of you still perpetuate the action. Sorry for the rant but I am SHOOK, thankyou @Brainergiser for the helpful tips!
You're killing your insects?? And a praying mantis at that? 🤢😭 Considered one of the most unique and spiritual insects?? No thanks man, I am NOT about to have that unethical bug-killer juju in my life. I would never get my specimens by killing them. So sad 😭😭😭😭
Praying mantises are my favorite animal, how could you kill one of them? If i found one dead, then yeah, I'd probably try to pin it, but I wouldn't straight up murder it! Dislike!
oo... I would find my insects dead. I would never kill them. Poor thing, it didn't know what was coming.. Anyway, did you not removeanything from it??

I also had a mantis but he died because of old age he was my bff i miss him alot and they are not easy to find where i live
Watching this after mine, Cleo, died after giving birth is messed up for me
I would never kill something just to frame it. i find mine dead. This is informative and yet tragic.
I agree. Unfortunately I had to stop watching this. I love insect taxidermy but do not agree with killing it to frame it.
But if you find them dead and dried out its hard to frame them. They'll crack or break apart.
+Jessica Hart you can actually soak them.
Alex Doss you can't soak all insects so no
Ice ok, you can't soak them all. You can still soak some. So yes.
I’m in biological studies and I find mine dead 💀
Awesome ❤
Why would you kill a praying mantis of all things?? They make awesome pets.
ikr! we had one for a while!
I find praying mantis on RUclips the most often to kill but I wonder why
@@dainatracy1457 they don't even live long either. Wait 6 months and you'll have had a good pet and a good specimin for preservation.
I have a pray mantis it was live about 4 month I miss it so much 😭😭

Damn, now das ssad
Don't think about it

Fiona Blathnaid absolutely! ❤️
That’s how you have to do it. And plus it was already dead he didn’t kill it to the frame.
SuppSamanthaa not true
We all just watched the same video. He did kill it and it isn’t the ONLY way to do it!
Ashley Marie Mayle Child of God- JESUS Christ I know he killed it. The original comment said he killed it with the pin. It was already dead prior to pinning.
SuppSamanthaa well it’s still awful he killed it!!
I really liked this video. Could you please tell me how i dry the insect at home. i mean which techniques should i used to dry before mounting.

I'm from India too.
You forgot the most important part, insects live a relatively short life so euthanizing shouldn't have been an option. It's cruel.
Why kill;((

okay, sorry.. but if you kill it you should do the work as well as possible, cuz that does not looks like its in a good shape.. (plz don't hate me :c)

Don't kill the inserts for frame you can take the dead one for this
Brother it's a subject in bsc agri
What can you put on your insect to give it that shiny, glossy look when framing?
No idea.
well,if you're thinking about beetles'those are already shiny.you can also cast insects in resin, although scientists usually don't do that.
This was very informative, thanks dude!

I can’t believe you would kill a beautiful creature as such :/

DO NOT KILL THEM SO YOU CAN FRAME THEM! find them naturally dead
nice video by the way

Mine was decapetated and still alive so I had to put an end to that cuz I felt bad
Is there any alternative to neptaline balls or the antimold chemical
I just like to keep insects dead body in my home.
bastard really did killed the mantis instead of waiting for it to die... bruh bruh bruh
do people do this witn crustaceans
i did it with a shrimp
Thank you so.much
why kill a beautiful creature like this :'(
You shouldn’t kill it to frame it. Find dead ones
Why did you kill it, you could have bought a dead one
Why do you kill the insect?
why do we do this? observing them when they are alive can teach us more about them.
Hmm ya got a point but I mean it’s cool to have a lil insect Collection 🥺😍
But killin them just for preservations kinda cruel 🥺😭
