We have lost so much in the name of 'safety' and 'growth'. Imagine trying to buy explosives to create art that doesn't make a profit. Imagine doing it just to satisfy yourself. You can't even begin to try something like that today.
I don't mind his art but can't agree with his concept. Death of loved ones, job loss, property loss, personal tragedies, global tragedies, and just being alive fucks up your life. Only a very well-off person who can avoid most of these kinds of tragedies can say he/she needs art to fuck up their lives. People turn to their favorite music and books, etc., for comfort and to validate their personal truths. More adventurous people turn to challenging art to consider ideas they may not have before, so I can only agree if Mr. Weiner means "to think" when he says "fuck up".
"i don't appreciate explanations that much, that's why I think conceptual art is so boring. I like real art." So don't pay attention to the explanations and pay attention to the experience. The art. You can explain away 'real' art (and Zen), too. That's the point of Zen - the actual experience, which sometimes can be very simple or subtle. Almost nothing. Way over the rationalist square's heads. I don't like conceptual art - I think it's boring, too; but it is 'real' art. Everything made by man is art. The other stuff is nature. "There is nothing insignificant in the world. It all depends on the point of view. Every situation, every moment - is of infinite worth; for it is the representative of a whole eternity." - Goethe
i don't appreciate explanations that much, that's why I think conceptual art is so boring. i like real art with light and shadow, subsurface scattering, perspective, color theroy and anatomy
i am a firm believer that expression trough art should not be restricted to those who spend years learning to draw or sculpt or other such skills... furthermore, mastering one of these skills does not automatically make you an artist, it makes you a craftsman *however...* if you have to explain your "art" for it to have an impact on anybody then you fucked up as an artist somewhere along the way
perfect! skip all those years of hard work and you are already good to be a "conceptual artist". if it suits you, go for it. meanwhile, the game and movie industry will pay big money for all those true artists who were not lazy and mastered all the fundamentals skills so they can create art that people really like and not that modern art crap which is just ulgy and disgusting. beauty matters, deal with it.
All the well known conceptual artists came to their art through years and years of drawings and painting. None of these people turned 19 and decided to become an artist. The majority of artists who are passionate will arrive at conceptual art at one point or another; whether they stick with it or not.
Beauty is a matter of opinion and taste isn't truth. Modern Art (the period after the New Deal till about the 60s) is an amazing thing. Because one guy made a black painting doesn't make someone like DeKooning bunk. 90% of these artists put so much time into their work and it is an important thing in American history.
The statement that an artist should "Fuck Up His Own Life" is by itself very old-fashioned and out of date. Inspiration definitely comes from A place, but it's your choise which place is that
Conceptual art is a con job because you have to be convinced about an unexpressed idea. Why not just write a book? Life and art do not have a purpose, beauty and love make life worth living and so should art.
Plenty of conceptual artists do write books. LW makes art books. These BOOKS are works of Conceptual ART. Art does not owe you, the world or anybody else a responsibility to make the world beautiful, full of love and life worth living. You could claim that as a basic human responsibility, but even that is not the case. There are issues in society that need critical reactions . Art is a technical, cultural and social discipline with its own language, structures and rules - beauty and harmony are not arts intrinsic responsibility
@@jessehogan3647 Conceptual art is boring as fuck, if I want watered down philosophy there is plenty around without making recourse to conceptual art, but then I don't, so I won't. If art has it's own structures and rules (i agree btw, it does), where did they come from, and how did they develop pray tell? What conceptual art does is pretend not to care about those structures and rules, while usually sneaking them in through the back door anyway, and simultaneously making vacuous pronouncements and taking vacant postures, political and otherwise, all in order to sell a quasi-product to institutions who then peddle it off to a clientele which comically thinks itself profound while consuming it.

Lawrence Weiner - thank you I will do !!!

***** did you not read the part after the "however"?

I agree.

Thomas Wolfe wrote a book about this exact idea titled "The Painted Word."
Yo but isn’t all art conceptual

Community based art and art valued for its technical skill is a sham.
