    Jamie's definitely right that the style of play is a problem because that's what's turning the match going fans off of him. I'm an armchair fan, so my opinion is less important than theirs, and even I struggle to sit through most of our games - even when we win! I can't imagine blocking out countless weekends to travel to and from the match, only to watch us sit deep and counter against every team in the league 🤷
    We certainly can't complain about the silverware, I was doing laps of my garden when we won, but it's for the match going fans to decide whether they want to support watching that style every week and whether that discomfort is worth the potential trophy at the end of the season.

    • @edenholt4394
      @edenholt4394 3 месяца назад +6

      Think you make an excellent point here. Football is meant to be entertainment, if you’ve got fans struggling to sit through games they’re winning then you’ve got a problem.

      @@garyeastman2307 For your point to be true, managers would need to have specific performance conditions listed in their contact to precipitate termination, otherwise this becomes equally as subjective as the entertainment value the manager's style brings. I'm unaware of this being commonplace, or even used at all within their contracts, but I'm welcome to being corrected.
      Regardless, the question is whether to renew his contract, not to sack him; so, even if this were in his contract, it would only be relevant if the consideration was to sack him before the end of the season.
      As an aside, the results had been bad, which is exactly why the question of Moyes staying was being discussed!
      Lastly, your comment begs the question, what happens if the results are good, but the entertainment doesn't ever come?
      I expect you would say that the results take precedence (and I would agree that should be the case), but when the question is 'do we renew a contract for a manager?' then I think this can justifiably be a deal-breaking issue, providing the owners consider a better managerial option is available to take over who can deliver both style and performance.
      I agree with the overall sentiment of results being most important, as alluded to in my OP, but your point about contracts seems to be extraneous to what's actually being discussed 🤷

    • @billybobthornton9668
      @billybobthornton9668 3 месяца назад +1

      @@garyeastman2307 Thank you for the patronising explanation of what a contact is 😂 my point was that your comment gave the impression that there would be specific conditions, e.g. minimum points or maximum losing runs, so I thought it worthwhile noting that if this isn't the case then those conditions will still have an element of discretion at board/owner level. Obviously ending up in top half is very different to the relegation zone, but that's of course relative to the expectation of the owners, and to a lesser degree the fans.
      I do agree with the broader point, that results take primacy over entertainment, but that doesn't mean that entertainment isn't important - particularly to the match going fans!
      Also agree with the point about the team set up and that it's probably a necessity given the players we have, but many of those players were brought in prior to the sporting director's appointment, so Moyes definitely had some input into moulding the team in this way and therefore shoulders some degree of responsibility for the resulting style.

      @@edenholt4394 Football is meant to be sport. The fact that entertainment is a by product is incidental. As that would make them the best team the world has ever seen.

    Moyes rescued us twice from relegation. For that I thank him. For the turgid football, he has to go. Even after spending hundreds of millions we have the smallest and the oldest squad in the league who can’t pass a ball to save their life. Hundreds of millions in exchange for becoming counter attacking set piece merchants. It’s not about us thinking we deserve to be getting better results. It’s about us seeing teams down in the bottom half pass the ball better than us.

    • @MikeHinderson
      @MikeHinderson 3 месяца назад +1

      Technically he has never saved us at all. Bilic got sacked by hard losses at 3 of big 6 clubs away, never lost against any of 5 relegation rivals (only lost away at Newcastle) before Moyes took over. Pellegrini had 19 points slightly before halfway and Moyes made 20 for the rest of the season. The season he brought us 6th was done by Pellegrini’s men + Lingard + Bowen + closed doors. Pretty much the same group which brought him 7th. Then his pick Coufal, Soucek, Paqueta, Zouma joined and we were 14th. So how did he save us?

    Nah the fans that actually know the club wouldn't get mad at the playstyle. A counter attacking playstyle is fine, it is a type of playstyle for a reason.
    Even big teams like Real Madrid with all the star players they have, find themselves relying on a last minute goal to find the winner. That is, what their own fans call it, the Real Madrid way.
    The problem is,what carragher said, the goals being conceded. For a team who has like 2 right backs, 3 CDMs playing in the starting XI, they are conceding way too many goals. The "compact" defence is easily being split by players like Saka and Martinelli.
    And going to the attacking side of things, for a team who rely on counter attacks and set pieces their not doing well on those either.
    There's a severe lack of decision making in the final third, where players choose to hold the ball for too long or either take shots from unlikely to score areas or just cross it high into the box for a fairly short Jarrod Bowen to somehow battle against the very likely bigger players of their opponent teams, the centre backs.
    And set pieces, west ham were on par with arsenal at one point of the season on goals scored from set pieces. But in these recent games they have fallen off massively. James ward-prowse is still a dead ball specialist, but the other players are struggling to find the back of the net from those deliveries.
    In short, you've got a counter attacking team, whose defence isn't good enough neither is its attack

  • @Vincentdeoliveira
    @Vincentdeoliveira 3 месяца назад

    Honestly just find some form of stability with results for the remaining reason and I give it a fresh go for next season and bolster the squad with the right players that match their needs. Don’t panic buy and they’ll bounce back. No need to sack him.

Burnley should not be trying to play out from the back for example. I don't know who West Ham could get in to replace Moyes and could get this current squad getting 50%+ possession every game without a massive overhaul of players. A drastic change in styles could magically backfire on West Ham. Everton did well initially when they brought Martinez but very quickly that lack of a presence without a strong and sensible opinion sent them back down the table quickly. West Hams owners don't exactly have the best track record of making smart decisions prior to Moyes. Does anybody trust the West Ham board to make the smart decisions post Moyes?

    I don’t think there’s any WH fans that expect them to play like Man C and Arsenal. However they want more engaging football. More to that they want the defence to work. They want to use the skills of the creative players in the team that have cost a lot of money. They also want a manger that knows how to turn a game around when things aren’t working. To make incisive substitutions ina timely manner that can impact a game and rescue a point or at least get the team fighting.

    3:04 West Ham's best manager, in the PL era? Short memories. Harry Redknapp got a 5th place finish. Slaven Bilic got the most points we've ever achieved, in a PL season. Neither won the Europa Conference, because it didn't exist back then. Not a single PL would take Moyes. Loyalty works both ways. West Ham gave him a shot, when after he'd failed at Man Utd, Real Sociedad and relegated Sunderland. With £500m spent, an aging squad and just 1 win in 2024, West Ham do expect more.

    Moyes will not be leaving at the end of the season because of the results or style of play, it will be because he is out of contact and Moyes, Steidten and the club can't agree new terms.
    Moyes want to carry on as a manager with a lot of overall say, transfers etc.
    The club and more importantly Steidten want to now hire a coach to run the first team only .

    Reminds me of Spurs.
    George Graham won them the League Cup, but it wasn't good enough due to the style of play "not being the Tottenham way".
    Spurs won nothing since.
    Everton fans wanted Moyes out after losing the FA Cup semi final to Liverpool - he went to Man Utd shortly after & in the years after Everton slowly worked there way down from competing for Europe every year, and back to where Moyes found them - fighting relegation every year and on the edge of being ruined by poor financial planning.
    Or first time he was at West Ham, when they thought they could do better & had to come crawling back when no other manager could get them out of relegation fights and up the league table on their kind of budget.
    Be careful what you wish for West Ham fans, not many managers out there can offer the kind of stability Moyes can. Before you force him out, you need a good replacement lined up. There needs to be a proper plan, not knee jerk nostalgia for a time you've never known.
    There's not many manager's around you can point to and say with confidence "he could take West Ham forward".

      Their kind of budget?
      One of the biggest spenders in world football over the last 5 yrs.
      Fact is no other club in the top ten would want Moyes as their manager.
      His style of play and footballing principles is not what most fans want to pay to see.
      He's been incredible of course but it's now about trying to get to 8th, 7th and possibly even 6th, playing with a hint of modern ideology.
      Every managerial appointment is a risk.
      Would rather dare to dream than being careful what to wish for 😊

    • @M-E_123
      @M-E_123 3 месяца назад

      @kase5377
      West Ham are 8th in the Premiership on net spending over the last 5 years - same place as they currently are in the league (and not all of that spending was by Moyes).
      Of the 7 clubs that outspent them over that period, 6 are currently higher in the league, all spending a net between £90m and £450m more than West Ham.
      Liverpool spent around £12m less (so essentially the same) and are 9th in net spend over the same period (but were Champions in that first year, instead of 16th like West Ham - so had stronger foundations to build on).
      Forest spent only £30m less than West Ham over the last 5 years and are in a relegation fight.
      You sold one of your best players in the summer & haven't let Moyes reinvest that money into the squad (being one of only 4 teams in the league running at a profit looking at the last 2 transfer windows only).
      Despite this, you're higher up the league than last season & you're still in Europe, in a much tougher competition than last year.
      Moyes won't be there forever, but before he goes you need a proper plan for who is going to come in - most proven managers won't go to a club that doesn't match the spending of clubs they're expected to compete with - Moyes has given you a team that competes for trophies & top 6 finishes on a mid-table teams budget, that's a rare thing in the modern game.
